Clearance of serum solutes by hemofiltration in dogs with severe heat stroke
Background: We have previously reported that hemofiltration (HF) may be an effective additional means of treating heat stroke when rapid cooling is not effective. Methods: Dogs were assigned to a heat stroke (control) or heat stroke?+?hemofiltration (HF) group (n?=?8 each group). After heat stroke induction, dogs in the HF group received HF for 3?h. Serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-?, IL-6, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine were measured at baseline and 1, 2, and 3?h after heat stroke. Clearance rates of solutes were determined 1, 2, and 3?h after the start of HF. Results: Ser...

Cross-Clamping a Porcelain Aorta: An Alternative Technique for High-Risk Patients.
Conclusions: Cross-clamping with "open proximal ascending aorta" is effective and the incidence of stroke and systemic embolisation in patients with porcelain aorta is low compared to literature. PMID: 24525522 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The hemodynamic effects during sustained low-efficiency dialysis versus continuous veno-venous hemofiltration for uremic patients with brain hemorrhage: a crossover study.
Conclusions With this controlled crossover study, the authors provide the pilot evidence that both SLED and CVVH display identical acute hemodynamic effects and increased ICP after dialysis in brain hemorrhage patients. Clinical trial registration no.: NCT01781585 ( ClinicalTrials.gov ). PMID: 23706048 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clearance of myoglobin by high cutoff continuous veno‐venous hemodialysis in a patient with rhabdomyolysis: A case report
Abstract Continuous veno‐venous hemodialysis using high cutoff filters (HCO‐CVVHD) is a promising technique, which may be effective to decrease the extremely high level of circulating myoglobin in patients with rhabdomyolysis (RM). Here, we report a patient with RM caused by heat stroke who was successfully treated by HCO‐CVVHD. A male patient received HCO‐CVVHD with 4 L/h dialysate for 5 days and then pre‐dilution continuous veno‐venous hemofiltration (CVVH) at a dose of 4 L/h until recovery of renal function. The clearance of myoglobin and albumin at 5 minutes, and at 4, 12, and 24 hours were calculated. ...

Early and mid-term clinical outcome in younger and elderly patients undergoing mitral valve repair with or without tricuspid valve repair
CONCLUSIONS Data demonstrate excellent postoperative mortality rates in older patients undergoing MV repair with or without TV repair. Consequently, even in older patients with numerous comorbidities, MV repair should be considered a suitable surgical method.

Does concomitant tricuspid annuloplasty increase perioperative mortality and morbidity when correcting left-sided valve disease?
In conclusion, there is good evidence to support that tricuspid annuloplasty is a low-risk procedure and concomitant TV repair does not significantly increase the perioperative mortality and morbidity when correcting left-sided valve disease.

Peripheral Perfusion Index Predicts Hypotension during Fluid Withdrawal by Continuous Veno-Venous Hemofiltration in Critically Ill Patients
Conclusion: Progressive fluid withdrawal during CVVH is poorly tolerated in patients with less increases in SVR. The occurrence of hypotension can be predicted by low baseline PPI.Blood Purif 2015;40:92-98

Early and Late Outcomes After Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Repair Surgery.
CONCLUSION: These data are the first from the U.K. demonstrating early and late outcomes after thoracoscopic assisted minimally invasive mitral valve repair surgery. The data establish the safety and efficacy of the technique and, importantly, lend further support towards a prospective randomized comparison of minimally invasive versus conventional mitral valve repair surgery. 7 medtech stories we missed this week: Oct. 20, 2017
[Image from unsplash.com]From InspireMD’s distribution deal to RenalGuard touting a new study, here are seven medtech stories we missed this week but thought were still worth a mention. 1. InspireMD inks Chile distribution deal InspireMD announced in an Oct. 12 press release that it has signed a distribution deal with CorpMedical Chile to distribute the MGuard Prime Embolic Protection System (EPS). The MGuard Prime EPS treats acute coronary syndromes like acute myocardial infarctions. 2. Medacta launches MiniMed hip stem Medacta has launched its MiniMAX Hip System in the U.S., according to an Oct. 12 press release. ...

Predictors of outcome after CABG in the South-Asian community: a propensity matched analysis
CONCLUSION: This study highlights the cumulative risk associated with ethnicity and renal disease in predicting short-term outcomes following CABG. This warrants further investigations in larger populations, thus guiding pre-operative risk-stratification.PMID:34365853 | DOI:10.1177/02676591211037577
