Incidence and Clinical Impact of Stroke Complicating Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: Results of the Euro Heart Survey Percutaneous Coronary Interventions Registry Cardiac Catheterization
Conclusions— Stroke as complication of PCI occurs rarely (0.4%) in clinical practice in Europe today. However, peri-interventional stroke is still associated with an exceedingly high in-hospital mortality rate. Most predictors for periprocedural stroke are not modifiable and cannot be diminished before PCI. Therefore, treatment of patients with stroke after PCI needs further research.

Incidence and Risk Factors of Cerebrovascular Events Following Cardiac Catheterization Stroke
Conclusion In a single-center, retrospective assessment over nearly 20 years, cardiac catheterization-related CVEs were very rare and nearly exclusively ischemic. The independent predictors for these events were found to be the performance of an intervention and those associated with increased atherosclerotic burden, specifically older age, triple vessel disease, and prior stroke. The presence of intracoronary thrombus appears also to raise the risk of procedure-related CVE.

Over 1.4 million cardiac catheterization procedures (CCPs) take place yearly. CPP related stroke incidence in 1973 was reported as 0.23%. CCPs are invasive in nature with complications occurring due to unintentional trauma to preexisting atherosclerotic aortic plaques or thrombus formation at catheter/guidewire tips. Less common causes of ischemic stroke are air, left ventricular clot, hypotension, arterial dissection, fractured guidewire. Neurological Events Following Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement and Their Predictors: A Report From the CoreValve Trials Structural Heart Disease
Conclusions— Predictors of early stroke after TAVR included clinical and procedural factors; predictors of later stroke were limited to patient but not anatomic characteristics. These findings indicate that further refinement of imaging to identify anatomic factors predisposing to embolization may help improve stroke prediction in patients undergoing TAVR. Effect of Milrinone Infusion on Pulmonary Vasculature and Stroke Work Indices: A Single-Center Retrospective Analysis in 69 Patients Awaiting Cardiac Transplantation
ConclusionMilrinone improved left ventricular stroke work indices to a greater extent than right ventricular stroke work indices and had beneficial effects on right ventricular net input impedance, predominantly via augmentation of left ventricular stroke volume and passive unloading of the pulmonary circuit. Patients who had the worst biventricular performance benefited the most from chronic milrinone infusion.

RV stroke work in children with pulmonary arterial hypertension: estimation based on invasive haemodynamic assessment and correlation with outcomes
Conclusions RVSW can be estimated in children with PAH, and is significantly associated with abnormal WHO class, the need for septostomy, as well as mortality. Indices accounting for RV performance as well as ventricular-vascular coupling may be useful in the prognosis and, hence, management of children with PAH.

A Case of Giant Cell Arteritis Presenting As Catastrophic Posterior Circulation Stroke: A Diagnostic Dilemma
We describe a case of a 75-year-old woman who presented with jaw claudication and temporal headache. A colour duplex ultrasonography and later biopsy of the temporal arteries confirmed GCA and she was commenced on oral steroids. Short-term risk of periprocedural stroke relative to radial vs. femoral access: systematic review, meta-analysis, study sequential analysis and meta-regression of 2,188,047 real-world cardiac catheterizations
CONCLUSION: Periprocedural stroke remains a rare and hard-to-predict adverse event associated with cardiac catheterization.
