COVID ‐19 vaccination in patients with rheumatic diseases: Vaccination rates, patient perspectives, and side effects
ConclusionCOVID-19 vaccination is associated with no increased risk of side effects in any particular disease or drug therapy, therefore vaccination should be encouraged in patients with rheumatic disease. In addition, younger age is associated minimally, while mRNA vaccine is associated with increased side effects.

Implications of atrial fibrillation on the clinical course and outcomes of hospitalized COVID-19 patients: results of the Cardio-COVID-Italy multicentre study
ConclusionAmong hospitalized patients with COVID-19, a history of AF contributes to worse clinical course with a higher mortality and in-hospital events including new-onset AF, acute HF, and multiorgan failure. The mortality risk remains significant after adjustment for variables associated with COVID-19 severity and comorbidities.

Clinical Outcomes of Myocarditis after Moderate-Dose Steroid Therapy in Systemic Sclerosis: A Pilot Study.
Conclusions: Moderate-dose steroid therapy may improve myocarditis in SSc. A proportion of patients died due to cardiac complications during treatment, particularly those with high hs-cTnT, high NT-proBNP, and impaired LVEF. This trial is registered with NCT03607071. PMID: 33414828 [PubMed]

Increased Risk of Hypertension Associated with Spondyloarthritis Disease Duration: Results from the ASAS-COMOSPA Study.
CONCLUSION: Duration of SpA disease in the ASAS-COMOSPA cohort is associated with higher odds of HTN, particularly in those with axial disease, but not with other CV-related conditions. The association with HTN does not appear to be related to NSAID exposure. PMID: 30647169 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Role of Steroid Therapy after Ischemic Stroke by n-Methyl-d-Aspartate Receptor Gene Regulation
This study aimed to investigate progesterone impact on the expression of NMDA receptor subunits NR1, NR2 (A and B), NR3 (A and B) after an experimental model of ischemic stroke which is followed by an in silico analysis.

Sex steroids and cardiovascular outcomes in transgender individuals: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Conclusions: Low quality evidence suggests that sex steroid therapy may increase LDL-C and TG and decrease HDL-C levels in FTM, while oral estrogens may increase TGs in MTF. Data about patient important outcomes remain sparse. PMID: 28945852 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Tolosa-hunt syndrome associated severe internal carotid artery stenosis resulting in cerebral infarcts
Conclusions TSH is a rare cause of ICA stenosis but has not been reported to result in ischaemic strokes. The presumed mechanism of stenosis is due to non-specific periarteritic granuloma and is generally responsive to steroid therapy. The mechanism for stroke in this patient is presumably haemodynamic and this case illustrates that THS should be recognised as a potentially reversible cause for stroke in the appropriate clinical context.

Risk of sudden sensorineural hearing loss in stroke patients: A 5-year nationwide investigation of 44,460 patients
This study employed a nationwide population-based dataset to investigate the relationship between stroke and SSNHL. The Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database was used to compile data from 11,115 stroke patients and a comparison cohort of 33,345 matched nonstroke enrollees. Each patient was followed for 5 years to identify new-onset SSNHL. Stratified Cox proportional-hazard regression analysis was used to examine the association of stroke with subsequent SSNHL. Among the 44,460 patients, 66 patients (55,378 person-years) from the stroke cohort and 105 patients (166,586 person-years) from the comparison cohort were...

What Genetics are Associated with Multiple Sclerosis?
Discussion Multiple sclerosis (MS) is “a chronic degenerative, often episodic disease of the central nervous system marked by patchy destruction of the myelin that surrounds and insulates nerve fibers, usually appearing in young adulthood and manifested by one or more mild to severe neural and muscular impairments, as spastic weakness in one or more limbs, local sensory losses, bladder dysfunction, or visual disturbances.” It is a chronic disease and therefore symptoms must occur more than once. The first episode is called an acute demyelinating attack. Fifteen to forty-five percent of children with their first...

Extra- and Intracranial Cerebral Vasculitis in Giant Cell Arteritis: An Observational Study
Abstract: Recognizing giant cell arteritis (GCA) in patients with stroke may be challenging. We aimed to highlight the clinical spectrum and long-term follow-up of GCA-specific cerebrovascular accidents. Medical charts of all patients followed in a French Department of Internal Medicine for GCA between January 2008 and January 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with cerebrovascular accidents at GCA diagnosis were included. Diagnosis of GCA was based on American College of Rheumatology criteria. Transient ischemic attacks and stroke resulting from an atherosclerotic or cardioembolic mechanism were excluded. Clinic...
