Aspirin and Subarachnoid Haemorrhage in the UK Biobank
In this study, we aimed to clarify the association between aspirin and SAH in the general population. The UK Biobank is a prospective population-based cohort study. Sex, age, smoking, alcohol, medication use, hypertension, blood pressure, ischaemic heart disease and stroke were recorded at baseline assessments. Follow-up is conducted through linkages to National Health Service data including electronic, coded death certificate, hospital and primary care data. Cox proportional hazards modelling was used to analyse the association between aspirin use and SAH. Of the 501,060 participants included in the analysis, a total of 5...

Associations between emergency call stroke triage and pre-hospital delay, primary hospital admission, and acute reperfusion treatment among early comers with acute ischemic stroke
AbstractTo investigate the association between the Emergency Medical Service dispatcher ’s initial stroke triage and prehospital stroke management, primary admission to hospitals offering revascularization treatment, prehospital time delay, and rate of acute revascularization. In an observational cohort study, patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in Denmark (2017–2018) were in cluded if the emergency call to the Emergency Medical Dispatch Center (EMDC) was made within three hours after symptom onset. Among 3546 included AIS patients, the EMS dispatcher identified 74.6% (95% confidence interval (CI) 73.1–76.0) co...

The natural history of epilepsy and nonepileptic seizures in Sturge-Weber syndrome: A retrospective case-note review
This study explored the natural history of epileptic and nonepileptic seizures into adulthood in patients with SWS, and their treatment, and investigated whether any clinical factors predict which symptoms a patient will experience during adulthood.METHODS: A retrospective case-note review of a cohort of 26 adults with SWS at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN). Childhood data were also recorded, where available, to enable review of change/development of symptoms over time.RESULTS: The course of epilepsy showed some improvement in adulthood - seventeen adults continued to have seizures, while six pa...

Quality and safety in the literature: July 2023
Healthcare quality and safety span multiple topics across the spectrum of academic and clinical disciplines. Keeping abreast of the rapidly growing body of work can be challenging. In this series, we provide succinct summaries of selected relevant studies published in the last several months. Some articles will focus on a particular theme, whereas others will highlight unique publications from high-impact medical journals. Key points Despite increased attention to patient safety over the last several decades, adverse events continue to be common in hospitalised patients, occurring in 23.6% of admissions studied. Genetic associations between miR ‑200bT & gt;C and miR ‑495A & gt;C polymorphisms and hypertension susceptibility
Exp Ther Med. 2023 May 31;26(1):353. doi: 10.3892/etm.2023.12052. eCollection 2023 Jul.ABSTRACTAlthough microRNA (miRNA)-mediated functions and gene expression regulation are involved in the susceptibility to vascular diseases, the potential effect of miRNA polymorphisms on the susceptibility of patients to hypertension (HTN) remains to be sufficiently elucidated. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify the potential association between miRNA (miR)-200bT>C (rs7549819) and miR-495A>C (rs2281611) polymorphisms, which may be implicated in stroke and vascular pathogenesis, and the susceptibility to HTN and relevan...

Computed tomography angiography-based radiomics model for predicting carotid atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability
This study aimed to identify radiomic features associated with the neovascularization of CAP and construct a prediction model for CAP vulnerability based on radiomic features. CTA data and clinical data of patients with CAPs who underwent CTA and CEUS between January 2018 and December 2021 in Beijing Hospital were retrospectively collected. The data were divided into a training cohort and a testing cohort using a 7:3 split. According to the examination of CEUS, CAPs were dichotomized into vulnerable and stable groups. 3D Slicer software was used to delineate the region of interest in CTA images, and the Pyradiomics package...
