Recommendations for Cost-Conscious Treatment of Basal Cell Carcinoma
ConclusionsFor a primary superficial BCC  <  0.5 cm arising on Area M, the cost-conscious algorithm prioritizes C&E or cryosurgery. For a primary nodular BCC 1.1 –2 cm arising on Area L, the cost-conscious algorithm prioritizes C&E, cryosurgery, or 5-FU. For a giant BCC, the cost-conscious algorithm identifies superficial radiation therapy as first line.

Case Report: Localized bullous pemphigoid induced by local triggers: a case series and a proposal for diagnostic criteria based on a literature review
ConclusionLBP should be suspected in patients with recurrent localized bullous eruptions. The presence of a trauma history in the same anatomic area is reported in most cases.

Radiotherapy for Mobile Spine and Sacral Chordoma: A Critical Review and Practical Guide from the Spine Tumor Academy
Cancers (Basel). 2023 Apr 18;15(8):2359. doi: 10.3390/cancers15082359.ABSTRACTChordomas are rare tumors of the embryologic spinal cord remnant. They are locally aggressive and typically managed with surgery and either adjuvant or neoadjuvant radiation therapy. However, there is great variability in practice patterns including radiation type and fractionation regimen, and limited high-level data to drive decision making. The purpose of this manuscript was to summarize the current literature specific to radiotherapy in the management of spine and sacral chordoma and to provide practice recommendations on behalf of the Spine ...

Proposed guidelines for appropriate utilization of superficial radiation therapy in management of skin cancers. Zemtsov-Cognetta criteria
CONCLUSION: These AUCs are in compliance both with the position statement of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and the ASTRO Clinical Practice Guideline on this subject. It is further recommended that SRT will be only performed by either a dermatologist who is board certified in Mohs surgery (MDS) and who had adequate SRT training or by radiation oncologists. Hopefully, this publication will stimulate further discussion on this topic.PMID:37113089 | DOI:10.1111/srt.13311

Systemic immune-inflammation landscape in brain metastasis needing neurosurgical resection: Analysis of 230 consecutive cases in a single center
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that brain metastasis is associated with perturbations in presurgical systemic immune-inflammation states. We should pay attention to the systemic immune-inflammation perturbations following brain metastasis in clinic, especially in the subpopulations with high risks.PMID:36169253 | DOI:10.1002/iid3.694

Outcomes of SBRT for lung oligo-recurrence of non-small cell lung cancer: a retrospective analysis
This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of SBRT for patients with lung oligo-recurrence of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) from our therapeutic center. Patients with lung oligo-recurrence of NSCLC treated with SBRT between December 2011 and October 2018 at Cancer Hospital of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Zhejiang Cancer Hospital) were reviewed. The characteristics, treatment-related outcomes, and toxicities of the patients were analyzed. Univariable and multivariable Cox regression were performed to identify the factors associated with survival. A total of 50 patients with lung oligo-recurrence of ...

Chasing Zero Harm in Radiation Oncology: Using Pre-treatment Peer Review
Conclusions: Catching errors prior to treatment is the only way to “chase zero” in radiation oncology. Various types of errors may exist in treatment plans and our GCPR model succeeds in preventing many errors of all shapes and sizes in target definition, dose prescriptions, and treatment plans from ever reaching the patients. Background and Introduction Since the release of the seminal report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) titled, “To Err is Human,” in 1999, the importance of patient safety and avoiding medical errors have been recognized and endorsed by the physician communit...

Dosiomics: Extracting 3D Spatial Features From Dose Distribution to Predict Incidence of Radiation Pneumonitis
In conclusion, the spatial features of dose distribution extracted by the dosiomics method effectively improves the prediction ability. Introduction Radiation pneumonitis (RP) is one of the major toxicities of thoracic radiation therapy. The clinical symptoms range from fever, cough to pulmonary function failure, which may occur during the first 6 months after irradiation. Reducing the prescription dose could lower the risk of RP incidence, but also impairs tumor control. An accurate RP predictor (or prediction model) is desired to “safely” irradiate the tumor target without increasing the risk of R...

Dental Care for Patients With Childhood Cancers.
Conclusion: Childhood cancer survivors present with unique challenges for dental management because of dental anomalies caused by cancer therapy. Interprofessional collaborative care between the pediatric dentist and the oncologist during and after cancer therapy will enable best outcomes for the pediatric patient. In addition, dental professionals must be prepared to meet the unique needs of long-term cancer survivors because of the increasing survival rates of childhood cancers. PMID: 30559620 [PubMed]

Health Impacts of Low-Dose Ionizing Radiation: Current Scientific Debates and Regulatory Issues.
Abstract Health impacts of low-dose ionizing radiation are significant in important fields such as X-ray imaging, radiation therapy, nuclear power, and others. However, all existing and potential applications are currently challenged by public concerns and regulatory restrictions. We aimed to assess the validity of the linear no-threshold (LNT) model of radiation damage, which is the basis of current regulation, and to assess the justification for this regulation. We have conducted an extensive search in PubMed. Special attention has been given to papers cited in comprehensive reviews of the United States (2006) a...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, June 20th 2016
We examined the engraftment and differentiation of alkaline phosphatase-positive NSCs expanded from the postnatal subventricular zone (SVZ), 3 months after grafting into the intact young or aged rat hippocampus. Graft-derived cells engrafted robustly into both young and aged hippocampi. Although most graft-derived cells pervasively migrated into different hippocampal layers, the graft cores endured and contained graft-derived neurons. The results demonstrate that advanced age of the host at the time of grafting has no major adverse effects on engraftment, migration, and differentiation of grafted subventricular zone...

The DecisionDx-UM Gene Expression Profile Test Provides Risk Stratification and Individualized Patient Care in Uveal Melanoma
Conclusions The DecisionDx-UM test is the only prognostic tool in uveal melanoma that has been prospectively validated in a multi-center study, and it is used by the majority of ocular oncology centers in North America for routine clinical prognostic testing36. The results of the test are used for stratifying patients for risk-appropriate metastatic surveillance, medical oncology referral and entry into clinical trials for adjuvant therapy. The test has been shown to provide superior prognostic accuracy in side-by-side comparisons with clinical, pathologic and chromosomal prognostic factors, and it is simpler to use than t...
