426 prevalence of, and risk factors for, dementia in adult outpatient referrals to a regional referral hospital in arusha, tanzania
ConclusionsThe prevalence of dementia in this population is lower than previously reported community-based rates in Tanzania, and similar to those in high-income countries. This is the first time the association between uncorrected visual impairment and dementia has been reported in SSA. Other associations identified are in keeping with previous literature. Further research on the management of dementia and its risk factors, and the support and education of carers and patients in east African populations is required.

Blood –brain barrier leakage at baseline and cognitive decline in cerebral small vessel disease: a 2-year follow-up study
In this study, we investigated the link between BBB leakage and cognitive dec line over 2 years in patients with cSVD. At baseline, 51 patients with clinically overt cSVD (lacunar stroke or mild vascular cognitive impairment) received a dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI scan to quantify BBB permeability in the normal-appearing white matter (NAWM), white matter hyperintensities ( WMH), cortical grey matter (CGM), and deep grey matter (DGM). Cognitive function in the domain executive function, information processing speed, and memory was measured in all patients at baseline and after 2 years. The association between baseline B...

The association between cardiovascular risk factors and major cardiovascular diseases decreases with increasing frailty levels in geriatric outpatients
CONCLUSION: Frailty and CVRF are both associated with CVD, but the impact of CVRF decreases in the presence of frailty. When confirmed in longitudinal studies, randomized controlled trials or causal inference methods like Mendelian randomization should be applied to assess whether a shift from traditional CVRF to frailty would improve cardiovascular outcome in the oldest old.PMID:34265412 | DOI:10.1016/j.exger.2021.111475

Global cognitive performance at 4-year follow-up in individuals with atrial fibrillation —findings from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing
ConclusionIndividuals with AF were more likely to show an increase in rate of errors between waves 1 and 3 (4-year follow-up period) in the TILDA population; however, results were not significant when controlling for age, sex and level of education.

Is There an Association between Norton Scale and Cognitive Impairment in Hip Fractured Elderly Patients?
Conclusion: Our findings suggest that there is an association between Norton Scale Scores and cognitive impairment. Norton score parameters, under certain circumstances, such as speech and other communication difficulties, can be used as a proxy measure for MMSE to indicate cognitive impairment. These findings can be even more helpful in the present time of “COVID-19,” when we have to evaluate older patients with facial masks and other defensive suits.Dement Geriatr Cogn Disord

The health status: the ignored risk factor in dementia incidence. NEDICES cohort
CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that it is worthwhile to include the SPH status as a RF in the studies of dementia and AD incidence and to explore the effect of its improvement in the evolution of this incidence.PMID:35025095 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-021-02045-0

Understanding the relationship between perceived discrimination and mortality in United States adults
CONCLUSIONS: Adults experiencing lifetime and daily discrimination had significantly increased risk of mortality after adjusting for predisposing, enabling, and need factors. The findings highlight the importance of screening patients during clinical encounters for experiences of discrimination and providing appropriate resources to mitigate the negative impact of discriminatory events on mortality. Future research should work to fully understand the mechanism by which discrimination increases risk of mortality. These future findings should be used to develop targets for interventions designed to decrease mortality among a...

Implications of Under-Reporting Medication Side Effects: Beta-Blockers in Heart Failure as a Case Example
ConclusionWe conclude that under-reporting perceived side effects of beta-blockers among adults with heart failure is common, is associated with Black race and low education, and may contribute to patient willingness to take additional medication to prevent future medical encounters.

Everyday Pain in Middle and Later Life: Associations with Daily and Momentary Present-Moment Awareness as One Key Facet of Mindfulness
This study investigated everyday associations between one key facet of mindfulness (allocating attention to the present moment) and pain. In Study 1, 89 community-dwelling adults (33-88 years; Mage = 68.6) who had experienced a stroke provided 14 daily end-of-day present-moment awareness and pain ratings. In Study 2, 100 adults (50-85 years; Mage = 67.0 years) provided momentary present-moment awareness and pain ratings three times daily for 10 days. Multi-level models showed that higher trait present-moment awareness was linked with lower overall pain (both studies). In Study 1, participants reported less pain on days on ...

News at a glance: A win for obesity drugs, a new infectious disease institute head, and Mexican fireflies under threat
CONSERVATION Researchers raise alarm over threat to Mexican fireflies Scientists from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) last week delivered a letter to the Mexican government requesting it regulate tourism centered on the threatened firefly species Photinus palaciosi . Endemic to Mexico’s Tlaxcala forests, P. palaciosi is one of the few species that glow in synchrony, offering an annual spectacle that attracts thousands of visitors during summer mating season. The letter describes how littering, artificial light, and noise interfere with the insects’ courtship and eg...
