115 Anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation – a single-centre audit on patient education, stroke and bleeding risk assessments and use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs)
Objective: To assess adherence to the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines on management of atrial fibrillation in adults, specifically the provision of a personalised package of care and information to patients, and stroke and bleeding risk assessments. To assess the frequency of use of DOACs as the anticoagulant of choice.

C-reactive protein and hypertension incidence in black and white Americans: REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study.
CONCLUSIONS: Elevated CRP attenuated a portion of the unadjusted excess risk of hypertension in black adults, but this excess risk was attenuated when controlling for measures of obesity in females and diet and socioeconomic factors in males. Inflammation related to these risk factors might explain part of the black-white disparity in hypertension. PMID: 33326556 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The interpretation of CHA2DS2-VASc score components in clinical practice: a joint survey by the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) Scientific Initiatives Committee, the EHRA Young Electrophysiologists, the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professionals, and the European Society of Cardiology Council on Stroke
In conclusion, this survey revealed overall good adherence to the correct definition of each component in scoring of the ‘C’, ‘H’, and ‘V’ elements of the CHA2DS2-VASc score, although the variation in their interpretations warrants further clarifications. The preferred referencing resources to calculate the score varied among different healthcare professionals. Guideline education to healthcare professionals and updated and unified online/mobile scoring tools are suggested to improve the accuracy in scoring the CHA2DS2-VASc score.

The contribution of diet and lifestyle to socioeconomic inequalities in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality
Conclusion: The socioeconomic distribution of diet, smoking and alcohol consumption largely explained the inequalities in CHD and stroke in the Netherlands. These findings need to be considered when developing policies to reduce socioeconomic inequalities in cardiovascular diseases.

Quality of anticoagulation control among patients with atrial fibrillation: An experience of a tertiary care center in Saudi Arabia
Conclusion Quality of anticoagulation in patients with AF receiving medical care in a tertiary care hospital was suboptimal, with nearly 40% of the time spent outside the therapeutic range. Methods to improve anticoagulation control among patients with AF should be implemented.

‘Ten Commandments’ of the EHRA Guide for the Use of NOACs in AF
Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are an alternative for vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), and have emerged as the preferred choice, particularly in patients newly started on anticoagulation. Both physicians and patients are becoming more accustomed to the use of these drugs in clinical practice. However, many unresolved questions on how to optimally use these agents in specific clinical situations remain. In 2013, the first “EHRA Practical Guide” was published to provide practical guidance for situations; an update was published in 2015. Below ...
