Testing anabolic activity, potency and mechanisms of action of the phyto-derived beta 2 agonist higenamine
Toxicol Lett. 2023 Aug 18:S0378-4274(23)00243-6. doi: 10.1016/j.toxlet.2023.08.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHigenamine (Hige), a plant derived alkaloid is classified as β2 agonist by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). However, pharmacologic mechanisms of its performance-enhancing activity have not been investigated so far. Therefore, we investigate the anabolic activity and associated molecular mechanisms of Hige in C2C12 myotubes. In differentiated C2C12 cells dose-dependent effects of Hige on myotube size were analyzed. The mRNA expression of genes involved in hypertrophy was measured. For mechanistic studies, Î...

Molecular mechanisms and treatment responses of pulmonary fibrosis in severe COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: ICU patients with COVID-19 who develop PF exhibit upregulated coagulation, inflammation, and neutrophil extracellular trap-related pathways as well as prolonged ICU length-of-stay and mortality. This study indicates that early dexamethasone treatment neither influences the incidence or clinical course of PF, nor clinical outcomes.PMID:37559053 | DOI:10.1186/s12931-023-02496-1

Tanshinone I alleviates steroid-induced osteonecrosis of femoral heads and promotes angiogenesis: in vivo and in vitro studies
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that TsI alleviates SIONFH and promotes angiogenesis by regulating SOX11 expression. Our work would provide new evidence for the application of TsI to treat SIONFH.PMID:37391758 | DOI:10.1186/s13018-023-03934-y

Evaluation of nano-curcumin against inhaled paraquat-induced lung injury in rats
CONCLUSIONS: Nano-CU ameliorated lung damage induced by inhaled PQ similar to dexa and a synergic effect between nano-CU and PIO was observed, suggesting, a possible PPAR-γ receptor-mediated effect of curcumin.PMID:37039972 | DOI:10.1007/s43440-023-00483-3

Paraquat-induced systemic inflammation and oxidative stress in rats improved by Curcuma longa ethanolic extract, curcumin and a PPAR agonist
Toxicon. 2023 Mar 23:107090. doi: 10.1016/j.toxicon.2023.107090. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe effect of Curcuma longa (Cl) ethanolic extract, nano-curcumin (Cu) and a PPARγ activator, pioglitazone on inhaled paraquat (PQ)-induced systemic inflammation and oxidative stress was examined in the present study. Control rats were exposed to normal saline and PQ groups to 27 and 54 mg/m3 (PQ-L and PQ-H) aerosols. Nine other PQ-H groups were treated with Curcuma longa (Cl, 150 and 600 mg/kg/day), nano-curcumin (Cu, 2 and 8 mg/kg/day), pioglitazone (Pio, 5 and 10 mg/kg), low dose of Pio + Cl and Cu and dexamethasone (0.03 mg/...

Efficacy of dexamethasone and N-acetylcysteine combination in preventing post-embolization syndrome after transarterial chemoembolization in hepatocellular carcinoma
CONCLUSION: Intravenous NAC + DEXA administration ameliorated the occurrence of PES event after cTACE in patients with intermediate-stage HCC.PMID:36816622 | PMC:PMC9932429 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v29.i5.890
