Home blood pressure predicts stroke incidence among older adults with impaired physical function: the Ohasama study
Conclusion: Higher home BP was associated with increased risk of stroke even among those with impaired physical function. Measurements of home BP would be useful for stroke prevention, even after physical function decline.

Factors Associated with Intima-Media Complex Thickness of the Common Carotid Artery in Japanese Noncardioembolic Stroke Patients with Hyperlipidemia: The J-STARS Echo Study.
CONCLUSION: Baseline mean and maximum values of carotid IMT in Japanese noncardioembolic stroke patients with hyperlipidemia were 0.89±0.15 mm and 1.19±0.32 mm, respectively, which were similar to those previously reported from Western countries. Age, smoking, hypertension, HDL cholesterol, and diabetes mellitus were associated with mean IMT, and those, except for hypertension, were associated with maximum IMT. Incidence and Risk Factors of Stroke or Systemic Embolism in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure - The Fushimi AF Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: The effect of HF on the incidence of stroke/SE may depend on the stage or severity of HF in patients with AF. The incidence of stroke/SE was markedly increased in the 30 days after admission for HF, but compensated 'stable' HF did not appear to confer an independent risk. N-Terminal Pro-B-Type Natriuretic Peptide Is Not a Significant Predictor of Stroke Incidence After 5 Years - The Ohasama Study.
CONCLUSIONS: NT-proBNP was significantly associated with an elevated stroke risk. Given, however, that the predictive power decreased with the number of years after NT-proBNP measurement, NT-proBNP should be re-evaluated periodically in Asian patients. Primary and secondary prevention of stroke and systemic embolism with rivaroxaban in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation
AbstractThe EXPAND Study examined the real-world efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism (SE) in Japanese patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). In this sub-analysis, we compared the differences in efficacy and safety between patients with and those without history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). This multicenter, prospective, non-interventional, observational, cohort study was conducted at 684 medical centers in Japan. A total of 7141 NVAF patients aged  ≥ 20 years [mean age 71.6 ± 9.4 (SD) years] who were being or planned to be treate...

Association of vegetable, fruit, and Okinawan vegetable consumption with incident stroke and coronary heart disease.
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that consumption of total vegetable and fruit, total Okinawan vegetables, and specific Okinawan vegetables in Japanese residents of Okinawa was not associated with risk of incident stroke and coronary heart disease. Right as well as left unilateral spatial neglect influences rehabilitation outcomes and its recovery is important for determining discharge destination in subacute stroke patients.
CONCLUSIONS: CBS is more useful than SIAS-M for prediction of functional outcomes in patients with both left and right hemisphere damages. Improvement of USN is important for returning home. Cognitive impairment may interfere with recovery of USN. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: Improvements of USN are important for planning the rehabilitation goal and determination of discharge destination. PMID: 31134787 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Non-High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol and Risk of Stroke Subtypes and Coronary Heart Disease: The Japan Public Health Center-Based Prospective (JPHC) Study.
CONCLUSIONS: In Japanese men, lower non-HDL-C levels were associated with a decreased risk of large-artery occlusive infarction and an increased risk of ICH, particularly lobar ICH. PMID: 31534078 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Guideline-Adherent Treatment for Stroke and Death in Atrial Fibrillation Patients From UK and Japanese AF Registries.
CONCLUSIONS: Approximately half of the AF patients received optimal ATT according to guideline recommendations, which was associated with a lower risk of stroke. Furthermore, there was no interaction for the 2 populations and the influence of ATT adherence. PMID: 31694989 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Examination of the Relationship between Worse Symptom and Differences Route during Administration of Argatroban in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients.
Abstract The treatment of acute ischemic stroke usually involves argatroban administration by continuous infusion for 2 d and by intravenous infusion twice a day for 5 d after that. However, the appropriate dose of argatroban to be administered is not clear. Therefore, no studies have been reported a comparison of intravenous and continuous argatroban infusion after day 3 for acute ischemic stroke patients. We aimed to identify the connection between differences in argatroban administration and worsening of symptoms after day 3 in ischemic stroke patients. We retrospectively evaluated the data of 107 ischemic stro...
