Budgetary impact analysis of alteplase - recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) - as a thrombolytic treatment for acute ischemic stroke in Colombia
CONCLUSIONS: Doubling the number of patients with AIS who are thrombolyzed would lead to reductions in the number of patients with sequelae and would require a budgetary effort of 5.5-7.0%. The early initiation of treatment gives an additional benefit in reducing the number of sequelae and a lower budgetary impact than initiation within the later time window.PMID:35702977 | DOI:10.1080/14737167.2022.2089655

Comparing the Course of Mental Health Over the First Year After Stroke With Healthy Controls in Colombia, South America
Stroke is a primary cause of death and disability in upper-middle –income countries such as Colombia. Given the lack of comprehensive rehabilitation for stroke patients in Colombia, there is a need to assess longitudinal mental health problems poststroke in this region.

RWD76 Using Real World Data to Quantify Risk Factors for Ischemic Stroke in Colombia
SISPRO, the official Colombian Ministry of Health administrative database, which reports more than 500 million annual patient contacts, has been used to estimate prevalence of many diseases . We explored this database to establish different diagnoses that have been associated, during a five-year period, with ischemic stroke, and to quantify the magnitude of their statistical association.

EE107 Cost-Effectiveness of Mechanical Thrombectomy for Acute Ischemic Stroke: Colombian Health System Perspective
Mechanical thrombectomy plus intravenous thrombolysis is the treatment of choice for patients with ischemic stroke due in large vessels of the anterior circulation. The number of patients with mechanical thrombectomy has increased. Our objective was to establish if it is cost-effective for the Colombian Health System.

Any type of physical exercise is good for the heart
Conclusion This study shows that all physical activity, in any form, is good for us. This includes both recreational and non-recreational activities. Don't be misled by some of the media: non-recreational activities like housework are not "better" than recreational activities like playing sports or going to the gym. The fact that reduced risk was seen with non-recreational activity across all countries, but only seen with recreational activity in high-income countries was probably just because fewer people in lower-income countries play sports or go to the gym. The researchers estimate that 8% of all deaths and...

Secondary CV Prevention in South America in a Community Setting: The PURE Study
ConclusionsThere are large gaps in the use of proven medications for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in South America. Strategies to improve the sustained use of these medications will likely reduce cardiovascular disease burden substantially.

The effect of physical activity on mortality and cardiovascular disease in 130  000 people from 17 high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries: the PURE study
We examined whether different amounts and types of physical activity are associated with lower mortality and CVD in countries at different economic levels. Methods In this prospective cohort study, we recruited participants from 17 countries (Canada, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Poland, Turkey, Malaysia, South Africa, China, Colombia, Iran, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe). Within each country, urban and rural areas in and around selected cities and towns were identified to reflect the geographical diversity. Within these communities, we invited individuals aged between 35 and 70 years ...

Health risk assessment for particulate matter: application of AirQ+  model in the northern Caribbean region of Colombia
AbstractAir pollution is considered the world ’s most important environmental and public health risk. The annual exposure for particulate matter (PM) in the northern Caribbean region of Colombia between 2011 and 2019 was determined using PM records from 25 monitoring stations located within the area. The impact of exposure to particulate matt er was assessed through the updated Global Burden of Disease health risk functions using the AirQ+ model for mortality attributable to acute lower respiratory disease (in children ≤ 4 years); mortality in adults aged >  18 years old attributable to chronic obstructi...

Cost-Efectiveness Of Dabigatran In Non Valvular Atrial Fibrillation In Colombia
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac rhythm disorder; it increases stroke risk 5 to 6 times. Prevalence in Colombia has been estimated in 3.6% in population age 60 or over (some 180 000 potential patients). The aim of this study was to estimate cost-effectiveness of dabigatran 110 mg and 150 mg BID as a therapy for non valvular AF in Colombian population.

Prevalence and risk factors associated to peripheral arterial disease in an adult population from Colombia.
CONCLUSIONS: Hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and obesity but not smoking were strong predictors of PAD. ABI measurement should be routinely conducted as a screening test in intermediate and high-risk patients for CVD prevention. This will allow for early intervention and follow up on populations at risk, thus, contributing to improve strategies for reducing CVD burden. PMID: 28623035 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
