Abstract A68: Extending Cancer 101: Public Health Graduate Students' Perception of Newly Developed HPV Module
Conclusion: Attitudes and knowledge about the HPV vaccine and how HPV is linked to several cancers, improved after the presentation. The availability of well-informed graduate students to serve as CHW is an easily sustainable and promising method to improve HPV vaccination uptake and completion among community members as well as promoting cancer education and awareness of primary prevention with the long term goal of reducing health disparities among the Puerto Rican community.Citation Format: Laura Moreno, Miguel Marrero, Lynette Ruiz, Susan Vadaparampil, Julio Jimenez, Anna Giuliano, Gwen Quinn, Teresita Antonia. The Role of the Dental Community in Oropharyngeal Cancer Prevention Through HPV Vaccine Advocacy
AbstractAs rates of human papillomavirus (HPV) –related oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) continue to rise, the dental community’s role in primary prevention efforts related to HPV vaccination will become increasingly important. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge, beliefs, practices, and perceived barriers regarding HPV and HPV vaccine a dvocacy within the dental community. A sample of 266 dentists and dental hygienists completed an online survey, and responses were then analyzed using frequencies of responses,t tests, chi-square tests, and Spearman ’s correlations. Ninety percent of providers believe it is impor...

What Causes Neutropenia?
Discussion Neuropenia is defined as a neutrophil count < 1500/µL. It is classified as mild from 1000-1500/µL, moderate from 500-1000/µL, and severe if < 500/µL. It is not uncommonly seen in the setting of acute self-limited infections, and with re-testing returns to normal. It is also not uncommon at certain ages, such as perinatally, especially in premature infants (up to 6%) . It is also common in certain ethnic groups particularly African American or Arabic populations where up to 10% of the children may have mild neutropenia which does not cause clinical disease. The overall prevalence a...

What Are Some Indications for Using Dexamethasone?
Discussion Corticosteroids are a group of drugs which can be naturally or synthetically produced. Naturally occurring substances are produced in the adrenal gland, and are protein-bound (primarily corticosteroid-binding globulin and albumin). In the target tissues, they may need to be converted to an active substance. They are then reduced, oxidized, hydroxylated or conjugated as measures to inactivate them. Synthetic steroids have less protein binding and depending on their structure are more or less resistant to inactivation. Prednisone is the glucocorticoid most often used for treatment, especially as it has a short hal...

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Renal Replacement Therapies?
Discussion Kidneys are amazing in that they filter the blood, eliminate toxins, balance fluids and electrolytes plus have a lot of reserve to do the job they need to do even when injured. Therefore, depending on the problem, chronic renal disease (CRD) often allows time before renal replacement therapy (RRT) is needed. RRT currently is dialysis (peritoneal or hemodialysis) or renal transplant. In general, the patient’s own kidneys do the best job for them but there is always a balance between the problems of CRD and its management, versus the potentially improved renal function with RRT. RRT itself though has a diffe...

What is the Difference Between a Paronychia and a Felon?
Discussion The hands are one of the most important parts of the body for interacting with the world. They are remarkably adapted having sensitive sensory receptors as well as feedback receptors for grasping, holding, and manipulating objects. Hands, especially with an opposable thumb, multiple joints within the hand, along with the wrist and elbow, allow the hand to move in multiple positions to manipulate the world. Hands also symbolize an emotional caring and sharing between individuals as hands are used to provide a true “human touch” in personal and social situations. Due to their important interactions in ...

Perspectives of Medical Experts' on Health Culture for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Compared to Auxiliary Health Workers
CONCLUSION: Knowledge among the auxiliary health workers was significantly different from that of psychology and cultural experts' in relation to health culture for human papillomavirus vaccination. It was indicated that these experts need to upgrade their health culture knowledge to increase the rate of community participation in human papillomavirus vaccination.PMID:36579990 | DOI:10.31557/APJCP.2022.23.12.4093

Addressing disparities in cancer care and incorporating precision medicine for minority populations
J Natl Med Assoc. 2023 Mar 29:S0027-9684(23)00030-5. doi: 10.1016/j.jnma.2023.02.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCancer incidence and outcomes vary considerably between racial and ethnic groups. Non-Hispanic (NH) Blacks are disproportionately burdened with the most common cancer types, having the highest death rate of any group. Racial health disparities are complex and have been identified at each step of the cancer care continuum, encompassing patient and provider factors and health care system processes. The higher cancer mortality among NH Blacks may reflect underuse of prevention strategies such as vaccination and ...
