Long‐term efficacy of the hepatitis B Vaccine in a high‐risk group
Abstract Chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a global health problem. In an attempt to control infection, worldwide HBV vaccination programs have been established. Saudi Arabia, an endemic area for HBV infection, established an HBV immunization program in 1989. This cross‐sectional study evaluates the long‐term protection of HBV vaccination 14–24 years after primary immunization in a high‐risk group (clinical year medical students) at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. All participants had complete HBV immunization at birth or in early childhood. Hepatitis B surface antibody (...

New antivirals eradicate hepatitis C in trial
Sofosbuvir and ledipasvir stop virus replicating in 97% of patients in study reported in the Lancet journalScientists have reported the successful eradication of hepatitis C in patients using two new antiviral drugs, raising hopes of a possible cure.In the trial, the virus was eliminated from almost all the patients involved, including those who had not previously responded to existing drugs.Hepatitis C is caused by a virus that spreads via bodily fluids and ends up damaging the liver. Unlike other forms of hepatitis, there is no vaccine and the only treatments include powerful combinations of drugs known as interferons an...

With the passage of time the frequency of HCV is increasing in different parts of the world. HCV is a major cause, which may end in liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. HCV has six main genotypes with many subtypes, which have variable sequence homology with each other. Symptoms can appear anytime from 2weeks to 6months, which includ...

Fetal Tissue Remains Essential, Medical Researchers Say
BOSTON (AP) — The furor on Capitol Hill over Planned Parenthood has stoked a debate about the use of tissue from aborted fetuses in medical research, but U.S. scientists have been using such cells for decades to develop vaccines and seek treatments for a host of ailments, from vision loss and neurological disorders to cancer and AIDS. Anti-abortion activists set off the uproar by releasing undercover videos of Planned Parenthood officials that raised questions of whether the organization was profiting from the sale of fetal tissue. Planned Parenthood has denied making any profit and said it charges fees solely to cover i...

This article documents the first case of TSS associated with the use of a menstrual cup in a 37-year-old woman. The authors also discuss the history of TSS associated with tampon use and the mechanisms by which menstrual cups may also lead to the syndrome. Avian influenza A (H5N1) infection with respiratory failure and meningoencephalitis in a Canadian travellerSince 1997, more than 600 individuals worldwide have been infected with the poultry-originating influenza, H5N1. This report describes the first case of avian influenza A (H5N1) in the Western hemisphere in a 28-year-old woman who had just returned from a trip to Be...

Hepatitis B virus vaccination‐related seroprevalence among health‐care personnel in a Japanese tertiary medical center
ConclusionsWe demonstrated the current HBV vaccination‐related seroprevalence of anti‐HBs along with anti‐HBc in a Japanese tertiary medical institution consisting of more than 1,000 HCP, which was an ordinary level as similar scales of hospitals in developed countries. Anti‐HBc would be important for understanding of HBV status, but not necessary for general HBV vaccine management for HCP.

IJERPH, Vol. 13, Pages 323: Hepatitis B Virus Vaccination Coverage in Medical, Nursing, and Paramedical Students: A Cross-Sectional, Multi-Centered Study in Greece
Students of health professions are at high risk of hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection during their clinical training. The aim of this cross-sectional, multi-centered study was to investigate the HBV vaccination coverage in Greek medical, nursing, and paramedical students, to look into their attitudes towards the importance of vaccines and to reveal reasons associated with not being vaccinated. A self-completed, anonymous questionnaire was distributed to 2119 students of health professions in Greece, during the academic year 2013–2014. The HBV vaccination coverage of students was high (83%), being higher among medical stud...

The effect of anticancer therapy on anti-hepatitis B antibody titres in patients with haematological malignancies and solid tumours
Conclusion High levels of anti-HBs may have a protective effect against the reactivation of HBV especially in patients with haematological malignancies who received immunosuppressive anticancer therapy.

Thimerosal-containing hepatitis B vaccine exposure is highly associated with childhood obesity: A case-control study using the vaccine safety datalink
Conclusions: In a dose-response manner, the present study associates an increased organic mercury exposure from Thimerosal-containing hepatitis B vaccines with an increased risk of obesity diagnosis, and suggests that Thimerosal is an obesogen. The results are biologically plausible and future studies are needed to examine this phenomenon.

Primate research is crucial if we are to find cures for diseases like Parkinson's
To effectively combat the scourge of neurodegenerative and other crippling diseases, we require the careful and considered use of nonhuman primatesNonhuman primates have long played a key role in life-changing medical advances. A recent white paper by nine scientific societies in the US produced a list of 50 medical advances from the last 50 years made possible through studies on nonhuman primates. These included: treatments for leprosy, HIV and Parkinson ’s; the MMR and hepatitis B vaccines; and earlier diagnosis and better treatment for polycystic ovary syndrome and breast cancer. The biological similarities between hum...

Hepatitis B seroepidemiology and booster vaccination in pre-clinical medical students in a Malaysian university.
CONCLUSIONS: Anti-HBs levels waned after 20 years post-vaccination, where more than 70% were within non-reactive levels. For healthcare workers, a booster dose followed by documenting anti-HBs levels of ≥10 mIU/mL may be recommended, to guide the management of post-exposure prophylaxis. Pre-booster anti-HBs testing may not be indicated. Serological surveillance is important in long-term assessment of HBV vaccination programs. No HBV carrier was detected. Hepatitis B and C Viral Infection: Prevalence, Knowledge, Attitude, Practice, and Occupational Exposure among Healthcare Workers of Jimma University Medical Center, Southwest Ethiopia.
Conclusion: The prevalence of HBV was intermediate according to the endemicity classification by WHO. The practice of SP was poor in most participants and, thus, occupational exposure was high. Therefore, regular screening and vaccination of healthcare workers, regular provision of basic or refresher training and availing logistics, and regular motivation of healthcare workers on the practice of standard precautions are recommended. Epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections among female sex workers in Switzerland: a local, exploratory, cross-sectional study.
Abstract Female sex workers are often considered highly vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, data on STI epidemiology in female sex workers are lacking in Switzerland. Our main goal was to evaluate the prevalence of six STIs (human immunodeficiency virus [HIV], hepatitis B, hepatitis C, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and syphilis) among local female sex workers in Lausanne. A local, exploratory, cross-sectional study was conducted on a convenience sample of adult (≥18 years) Female sex workers in Lausanne, Switzerland, from 1 April 2015 to 31 December 2016. female sex...
