Combining structured and unstructured data to identify a cohort of ICU patients who received dialysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Combining structured EHR data with information from clinical notes using simple queries increases the utility of both types of data for cohort identification. Patients identified by more than one source are more likely to meet the inclusion criteria; however, including patients found in any of the sources increases recall. This method is attractive because it is available to researchers with access to EHR data and off-the-shelf IR tools. PMID: 24384230 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prognostic effect of high-flux hemodialysis in patients with chronic kidney disease.
Authors: Li X, Xu H, Xiao XC, Deng SL, Wang W, Tang R Abstract We investigated the prognostic effects of high-flux hemodialysis (HFHD) and low-flux hemodialysis (LFHD) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Both an electronic and a manual search were performed based on our rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria to retrieve high-quality, relevant clinical studies from various scientific literature databases. Comprehensive meta-analysis 2.0 (CMA 2.0) was used for the quantitative analysis. We initially retrieved 227 studies from the database search. Following a multi-step screening process, eight high-qual...

Management of delivery of a fetus with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease: a case report of abdominal dystocia and review of the literature
ConclusionsManagement of delivery in cases of suspected autosomal recessive renal polycystic kidney disease needs to be discussed because of the risk of abdominal dystocia. The route and timing of delivery depend on the size of the fetal abdominal circumference and the gestational age. The rate of kidney growth must also be taken into account.

Characteristics of emergency department presentations requiring consultation of the national Poisons Information Centre.
CONCLUSIONS: For patients presenting at the emergency department with severe poisoning, contact with the poison information centre can help to implement specific treatment and avoid fatalities. In less severe cases involving more common agents (e.g. paracetamol, benzodiazepines), contact can help to avoid unnecessary treatment and serve as a source of information and/or confirmation. Predictors of long-term employment among patients with cystic fibrosis undergoing lung transplantation.
CONCLUSION: Pre-transplant employment is the dominant factor influencing lung transplantation employment in people with cystic fibrosis. People with cystic fibrosis undergoing lung transplantation should be encouraged to work for as long as their health status permits. Professional reintegration after successful lung transplantation should be supported by a multi-disciplinary lung transplant team. PMID: 32667678 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The influence of cognitive-behavioral therapy on depression in dialysis patients - meta-analysis.
Conclusions: The study showed that the use of psychological intervention based on cognitive- behavioral therapy was an effective method of decreasing the severity of depressive symptoms in hemodialyzed patients. For the sake of patient well-being, it seems reasonable to extend renal replacement therapy with psychological intervention such as cognitive-behavioral therapy. PMID: 33224325 [PubMed]
