Patient-doctor interactions around alternative and complementary medicine in the context of oncology care in a Latin American country
CONCLUSIONS: The low frequency of communication contrasts to the increasing use of CAM. Divergent perspectives between doctors and patients could limit shared decision-making on the use of CAM. Enhanced knowledge and education on CAM for both actors is fundamental to improve their interaction and to move away from paternalistic and confrontational communication, particularly in a world region with cultural backgrounds that influence the use of CAM.PMID:37734425 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctim.2023.102986

Effect of Zuo's warming Yang acupuncture therapy combined with lifestyle interventions on prediabetes: A randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: Zuo's warming Yang acupuncture therapy conjunction with lifestyle interventions was more effective than lifestyle interventions alone in reducing FPG, 2hPG and HbA1c levels in prediabetic patients. These results suggest that Zuo's warming Yang acupuncture therapy may be a safe and effective treatment option for prediabetes.PMID:37730092 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctim.2023.102985

Quality of Life and Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicines among Narcotics Anonymous Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study in Southeast Iran
CONCLUSION: Although there was no difference in quality of life between CAM and non-CAM users, the present study showed that prayer and medicinal herbs were the most commonly used methods among narcotics anonymous patients. However, prayer and religious beliefs were successful in improving the quality of life of these individuals. Physicians and other healthcare providers must advise patients with addiction to use different CAMs in order to improve their quality of life and quit narcotics. Future in-depth studies could help these patients use CAMs and improve their quality of life.PMID:37727769 | PMC:PMC10506870 | DOI:10.1155/2023/3003247

Characteristics and Applications of Peptide Nucleic Acid in the Treatment of Infectious Diseases and the Effect of Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy on Treatment Effectiveness
Infect Disord Drug Targets. 2023 Aug 22. doi: 10.2174/1871526523666230724120957. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntibiotic resistance is a growing global problem, so there is an urgent need for new antimicrobial agents and strategies. Peptide nucleic acid (PNA) oligomers could be designed and utilized as gene-specific oligonucleotides to target any infectious agents. Selectivity and high-affinity binding are the main properties of PNA. However, in therapeutic applications, intracellular delivery of peptide nucleic acids is still a challenge. In photodynamic therapy (PDT), which could be a useful adjunct to mechanical and an...

Multi-Institutional Analysis of Cancer Patient Exposure, Perceptions, and Trust in Information Sources Regarding Complementary and Alternative Medicine
CONCLUSION: A large proportion of patients with cancer are using CAM, some with the goal of treating their cancer. Although patients are primarily exposed to CAM through nonphysician sources of information, trust in physicians remains high. More research is needed to improve patient-clinician communication regarding CAM use.PMID:37722084 | DOI:10.1200/OP.23.00179

Quantitative Evidence of the effect of Baduanjin exercise on quality of life and cardiac function in adults with chronic heart failure
CONCLUSION: Evidence from the meta-analysis support the beneficial effects of Baduanjin exercise on the QoL, cardiac function, and VO2max in patients with CHFin China. For optimal QoL improvements, it is recommended to engage in Baduanjin exercise 5-7 times per week for 30-60 min, over a duration of at least 8 weeks. In terms of NT-Pro BNP, Baduanjin exercise sessions of 30-60 min, 2-7 times per week, for a minimum of 8 weeks are recommended.PMID:37717550 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctcp.2023.101775
