Recent Patents of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Allergic Rhinitis.
Authors: Hon KL, Fung CK, Leung AK, Lam HS, Lee SL Abstract Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common respiratory disease affecting both adults and children worldwide. Affected patients may experience nasal congestion/stuffiness, rhinorrhea (anterior and/or posterior), nasal/nasopharyngeal itching and sneezing. Allergen avoidance is the principal step in the management. Nasal saline irrigation to remove allergen (s) in the nose is a useful adjunctive therapy in the management of moderate to severe AR. Symptomatic relief and improved quality of life may be achieved in the majority of patients with appropriate pharmacothera...

Management of status asthmaticus in children.
CONCLUSIONS: Supplemental oxygen should be given to maintain an oxygen saturation of ≥92% in room air. Mainstay of pharmacologic treatment of status asthmaticus includes short-acting, β2 agonists such as salbutamol (albuterol) administered by metered-dose inhaler with spacer or, preferably, by nebulizer and oral corticosteroids. There is no advantage to intravenous corticosteroids unless the child cannot tolerate oral corticosteroids (e.g., protracted vomiting), or unable to take oral corticosteroid (e.g., intubated or unconscious). Inhaled ipratropium bromide and intravenous magnesium sulfate should be considered in ch...

Complementary, alternative and integrative medicine for childhood atopic dermatitis.
CONCLUSIONS: AD is a complex disease. The psychodynamics of the child and his/her family is the reason for the often suboptimal outcomes. Both Western and CAM practitioners should collaborate to create a mutually encouraging environment for the advances of IM. CAM and IM publications and patents are reviewed. Evidence of their efficacy is generally lacking. Further research is needed. PMID: 29189188 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Promising Pharmacological Effects and Therapeutic/Medicinal applications of Punica Granatum L. (Pomegranate) as a Functional Food in Humans and Animals.
CONCLUSIONS: Present review gives the insight towards major components of pomegranate as well as their pharmacological activities against pathological disorders. In spite of many beneficial properties of Punica granatum L., more research evidence on molecular basis are needed to find out the molecular mechanism of action in various animals and human models to validate the usefulness of Punica granatum L. as a potent therapeutic agent. Barriers to medication adherence in asthma: the importance of culture and context.
CONCLUSION: Disparities in controller medication use are pervasive. Identifying the sources of these disparities is a critical step toward generating intervention approaches to enhance disease management among the groups that bear the greatest asthma burden. Delayed hypersensitivity to new oral anticoagulants. Demonstration of cross reactivity for the drug category and definition of non-irritant concentrations for patch tests.
We reported a case of delayed skin reaction to edoxaban and we found the non-irritant concentration for patch test in the whole category of drugs. The patch test resulted positive for edoxaban. A successive challenge with alternative DTIs and/or a switch to warfarin is proposed as alternative therapy. PMID: 30066999 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Chronic Rhinosinusitis: A Systematic Review and Qualitative Analysis.
CONCLUSION: Overall, there is very limited evidence to support the use of CAM in the treatment of CRS. No significant adverse effects have been found. Given its widespread use, more rigorous data from high-quality research are needed before it can be routinely recommended. PMID: 30482029 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Childhood Alopecia Areata: An Overview of Treatment and Recent Patents.
CONCLUSIONS: None of the established therapeutic options are curative. However, newer treatment modalities including excimer laser, interleukin-31 antibodies and biologics are evolving so that there may be significant advances in treatment in the near future. AA can be psychosocially devastating. It is important to assess the quality of life, degree of anxiety, social phobia and mood of the patients and their families. Psychological support is imperative for those who are adversely affected psychosocially. PMID: 32723274 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Beware Allergy Or Asthma 'Treatments' At Alternative Medicine Clinics
(Reuters Health) - Alternative medicine practitioners like homeopaths and acupuncturists may claim to treat allergies or asthma, but a study in Canada found that many there offer remedies that are unproven or even dangerous. “Complementary and alternative medicine continues to grow in popularity ― particularly in the areas of allergy and asthma ― despite ongoing controversies,” said lead author Timothy Caulfield, research director of the Health Law Institute at the University of Alberta. “Both asthma and allergies can be a serious health condition,” Caulfield told Reuters Health by email. &ldquo...
