Applications of covalent organic frameworks for the elimination of dyes from wastewater: A state-of-the-arts review
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 19:140223. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140223. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCovalent organic frameworks (COFs) are class of porous coordination polymers made up of organic building blocks joined together by covalent bonding through thermodynamic and controlled reversible polymerization reactions. This review discussed versatile applications of COFs for remediation of wastewater containing dyes, emphasizing the advantages of both pristine and modified materials in adsorption, membrane separation, and advanced oxidations processes. The excellent performance of COFs towards adsorption and membrane f...

Performance of volatile fatty acids production from food waste at the presence of alkyl ethoxy polyglycosides and sodium dodecyl sulfate
This study investigated the performance of VFAs production from food waste at the presence of alkyl ethoxy polyglycosides (AEG) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The highest yield of VFAs was obtained at 0.1 g AEG/g TS (14.53 g COD/L), which increased by 25.80% than the Blank. But inhibited phenomenon was observed at other reactors with relatively low yield and delayed fermentation time. The inhibition of lactate's production and bioconversion delayed the fermentation time, and SDS has changed the acidogenic fermentation type from lactate-butyrate fermentation to acetate fermentation. In addition, more organic matter disso...

Microplastics in wastewater treatment plants and their contributions to surface water and farmland pollution in China
This study examines the presence of MPs in sewage and sludge in Shenzhen WWTPs and estimates the annual mass loading of MPs from WWTPs to surface water and farmland soil in China. According to our results, for Shenzhen, the annual contribution of MPs from WWTPs (which was obtained by multiplying the annual treated sewage volume by the estimated MP density in the treated sewage) to surface water could be 70.6-302 tons. With a normalized extrapolation model of population density, the contribution of national urban WWTPs to MPs in surface water was estimated to be 734 -3.10 × 103 tons/year, of which 220-950 tons/year entered...

Mechanisms of mitigating nitrous oxide emission during composting by biochar and calcium carbonate addition
Bioresour Technol. 2023 Sep 19:129772. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2023.129772. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo investigate the effects of biochar and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) addition on the mechanisms underlying nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions during composting, this paper conducted a systematic study on mineral nitrogen (N), dissolved organic carbon (C) and N, sources of N2O, and functional genes. Biochar and CaCO3 addition decreased N2O emissions by 26.5-47.8% (9.5-96.9 mg N kg-1 dw) and 13.9-37.4% (12.0-121.0 mg N kg-1 dw) compared to the control (14.3-179.7 mg N kg-1 dw), respectively. The mitigation of N2O emission was ...

Boron contamination and related health risk assessment in the soils collected from olive groves in İzmir province, Türkiye
In this study, it was aimed to determine the B pollution degree of the soils taken from the olive groves of İzmir province, which is approximately 180 km away from the B deposits in the Bigadiç district. In addition, the factors affecting boron adsorption and availability were discussed and the ecological and health risks of boron were evaluated. For this, soil samples were collected at depths of 0-30 cm from 118 olive groves and their B, Al, Fe, pH and organic matter contents were determined. The mean B content (47.08 mg/kg) of the study area was comparable to world-soil average B concentration (42 mg/kg). Also, B had a...

Singlet oxygen in the removal of organic pollutants: An updated review on the degradation pathways based on mass spectrometry and DFT calculations
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 19:140203. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140203. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe degradation of pollutants by a non-radical pathway involving singlet oxygen (1O2) is highly relevant in advanced oxidation processes. Photosensitizers, modified photocatalysts, and activated persulfates can generate highly selective 1O2 in the medium. The selective reaction of 1O2 with organic pollutants results in the evolution of different intermediate products. While these products can be identified using mass spectrometry (MS) techniques, predicting a proper degradation mechanism in a 1O2-based process is still ch...

Amorphous amEu-NH < sub > 2 < /sub > BDC and amTb-NH < sub > 2 < /sub > BDC as ratio fluorescence probes for smartphone-integrated naked eye detection of bacillus anthracis biomarker
Talanta. 2023 Sep 14;267:125164. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2023.125164. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe abnormal concentration of anthrax spore biomarker 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (2,6-DPA) will seriously affect public health. Therefore, a sensitive and rapid assay for 2,6-DPA monitoring is of vital importance. In this work, novel nano-sized amorphous Eu-NH2BDC (amEu-NH2BDC) and amorphous Tb-NH2BDC (amTb-NH2BDC) metal organic frameworks are prepared by adjusting the ratio of metal and ligand, respectively. Both of them exhibit highly sensitive and selective ratiometric fluorescence detection for 2,6-DPA with wider linea...

Use of Co < sub > 3 < /sub > O < sub > 4 < /sub > nanoparticles with different surface morphologies for removal of toxic substances and investigation of antimicrobial activities via in vivo studies
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29879-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCo3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) were formed using hydrothermal synthesis method and various surfactants to study the effect of changing surface morphology on catalytic and antibacterial activities. FT-IR, TEM, SEM, BET, XRD, and XPS analyses were performed to characterize the NPs. It was observed that as the morphology of Co3O4 changes, it creates differences in the reduction efficiency of organic dyes and p-nitrophenol (p-NP), which are toxic to living organisms and widely used in industry. The reaction rate constants (Kapp) ...

A novel bacterial sulfite dehydrogenase that requires three < em > c < /em > -type cytochromes for electron transfer
In this study, we identify SorCABD of S. oneidensis as a novel sulfite dehydrogenase (SDH), which catalyzes the oxidation of sulfite to sulfate. In addition to catalytic subunit SorA, this enzymatic complex includes three c-Cyt subunits, which all together carry out electron transfer. The electrons extracted from sulfite oxidation are ultimately delivered to oxygen, leading to oxygen reduction, a process relying on terminal oxidase cyt cbb3. Genomic analysis suggests that the homologs of this SDH are present in a small number of bacterial genera, Shewanella and Vibrio in particular. Because these bacteria are generally cap...

Development of a high-performance label-free electrochemical immunosensor for early cancer diagnosis using anti-CEA/Ag-MOF/GO/GCE nanocomposite
Environ Res. 2023 Sep 19:117178. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2023.117178. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn order to detect carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as a tumor marker in lung cancer for early cancer diagnosis, this study aimed to develop a label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on the immobilization of an Anti-CEA antibody on a metal-organic framework (MOF)-graphene oxide nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (Anti-CEA/Ag-MOF/GO/GCE). Ag-MOF/GO nanocomposite was prepared on the GCE surface using the ultrasonic irradiation method, and Anti-CEA antibody was subsequently immobilized on the surface. Analysis of ...
