Food allergy: Epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment
This review focuses on advances and updates in the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of food allergy over the past 3 years since our last comprehensive review. On the basis of numerous studies, food allergy likely affects nearly 5% of adults and 8% of children, with growing evidence of an increase in prevalence. Potentially rectifiable risk factors include vitamin D insufficiency, unhealthful dietary fat, obesity, increased hygiene, and the timing of exposure to foods, but genetics and other lifestyle issues play a role as well. Interesting clinical insights into pathogenesis include discoveries regardin...

Concomitant sensitization to ragweed and mugwort pollen: who is who in clinical allergy?
CONCLUSION: This study found that Art v 6 plays an important role in mugwort allergy and that the cross-reactivity between Art v 6 and Amb a 1 is frequent, bidirectional, and clinically relevant in the area of Milan. PMID: 25053399 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Relation between eosinophilic esophagitis and oral immunotherapy for food allergy: a systematic review with meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: New onset of EoE after OIT occurs in up to 2.7% of patients with IgE-mediated food allergy undergoing this treatment strategy. The limited data on the utility of allergen immunotherapy as a therapy for EoE prevent a recommendation for this treatment option. PMID: 25216976 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Significance of 40-, 45-, and 48-kDa Proteins in the Moderate-to-Severe Clinical Symptoms of Buckwheat Allergy.
CONCLUSIONS: The 40-50 kDa protein is implicated as an important allergen to predict moderate-to-severe clinical symptoms in Korean children with buckwheat allergy. PMID: 25553261 [PubMed]

Decreased FOXP3 mRNA expression in children with atopic asthma and IgE-mediated food allergy.
CONCLUSION: Significantly lower levels of FOXP3 gene expression, observed more commonly in children with asthma and IgE-dependent FA than in healthy controls, were associated with a more severe clinical course. Therefore, FOXP3 expression could serve as an indicator of severe asthma with concomitant atopic conditions such as IgE-dependent FA. PMID: 26409874 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Pre-seasonal, subcutaneous immunotherapy: a double-blinded, placebo-controlled study in elderly patients with an allergy to grass.
CONCLUSION: Pre-seasonal SCIT in the elderly is safe and efficacious and elicits an immune response comparable to what is found in studies of younger patients. PMID: 26815709 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Synchronous telehealth for outpatient allergy consultations: A 2-year regional experience.
CONCLUSION: Both new and follow-up visits to the allergist/immunologist were well received by patients and demonstrated significant indirect cost savings, with less than one fourth of the patients recommended for an in-person visit. This appears to be the first systematic assessment of TeleAllergy for new and follow-up patient encounters in a clinic-based allergy/immunology practice. Allergy in urban elderly population living in Campania region (Southern Italy). A multicenter study.
In conclusion, the prevalence and clinical significance of airway allergic sensitization in the elderly living in Campania region is more significant than expected in latter stages of life. Physicians should not neglect the role of atopy as a risk factor for the onset of allergic respiratory symptoms even in elderly patients. PMID: 27425174 [PubMed - in process]

The Kingston Allergy Birth Cohort: Exploring parentally reported respiratory outcomes through the lens of the exposome.
CONCLUSION: The KABC is a unique cohort with diversity that can be leveraged for exposomics-based studies. This study found that all 3 domains of the exposome had effects on the respiratory health of KABC children. Ongoing studies using phase 1 of the KABC continue to explore the internal exposome through allergy skin testing and epigenetic analyses and the specific external domain through in-home environmental analyses, air pollution modeling, and ultimately potential convergences within and among domains. Changes in patient quality of life during oral immunotherapy for food allergy
ConclusionsQOL of patients with food allergy improves in some but deteriorates in others during OIT. Patients with impaired QOL at baseline, improve significantly despite the treatment‐burden. Some patients with better QOL at baseline, might deteriorate during OIT.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Targeting histone ‐acetyltransferase Tip60 inhibits intestinal allergy
ConclusionsTip60 plays an important role in the induction of IgE in B cells. Blocking Tip60 inhibits the allergic inflammation in the intestine, suggesting Tip60 inhibitor may be a potential anti‐allergy drug. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Skin prick test analysis reveals cross-sensitization to tomato profilin and grass pollen in nasobronchialallergic patients with history of tomato food allergy.
We report here, the first such study in Indian population. We investigated 246 allergic rhinitis / asthma patients by diagnostic case history and skin prick test (SPT); grass pollen mix, tomato extract and purified tomato profilin were used for SPT. Tomato profilin was purified by affinity chromatography, and analyzed by HPLC (95% purity) and SDS-PAGE (14 kDa). We observed that 38% of the patients had sensitization to both grass pollen and tomato fruit, of which 92% were sensitized to tomato profilin. Among patients with a history of food allergy to tomato fruit, the association was more pronounced (66%). Tomato profilin a...
