Entrustable professional activities as a training and assessment framework in undergraduate medical education: A case study of a multi-institutional pilot
Med Educ Online. 2023 Dec;28(1):2175405. doi: 10.1080/10872981.2023.2175405.ABSTRACTIn 2014, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) published 13 Core Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) that graduating students should be able to perform with indirect supervision when entering residency. A ten-school multi-year pilot was commissioned to test feasibility of implementing training and assessment of the AAMC's 13 Core EPAs. In 2020-21, a case study was employed to describe pilot schools' implementation experiences. Teams from nine of ten schools were interviewed to identify means and contexts of implementing...

Improving Diabetes Care and Patient Outcomes in Skilled-Care Communities: Successes and Lessons From a Quality Improvement Initiative
Conclusion: Diabetes care, particularly in elder adults, is complex and requires a multidisciplinary approach. Focused quality improvement activities within LTC communities offer care providers the information and tools required to make effective changes that have the ability to promote improved patient care. Encouraging Reflection and Change in Clinical Practice: Evolution of a Tool
This article describes the systematic development and gradual transformation of a tool to guide participants in a continuing medical education program to reflect on their current practices and to make commitments to change. The continuous improvement of this tool was influenced by evolving needs of the program, reviews of relevant educational literature, feedback from periodic program surveys, interviews with group facilitators, and results from educational research studies. As an integral component of the educational process used in the Practice Based Small Group Learning Program, the current tool is designed to help fami...

The ASPIRE-to-Excellence Program: A Global Effort to Improve the Quality of Medical Education
Publications and organizations ranking medical schools rely heavily on schools’ research-oriented and grant-success data because those are the publicly available data. To address the vacuum of evidence for medical education quality, in 2012 the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) introduced an initiative entitled A Schools Programme for International Recognition of Excellence in Education (ASPIRE) awards. ASPIRE panels of international experts in specific areas of medical education have developed internationally peer-based criteria to benchmark excellence in social accountability, student engagement, stude...

Active Learning in Psychiatry Education: Current Practices and Future Perspectives
Over the past few decades, medical education has seen increased interest in the use of active learning formats to engage learners and promote knowledge application over knowledge acquisition. The field of psychiatry, in particular, has pioneered a host of novel active learning paradigms. These have contributed to our understanding of the role of andragogy along the continuum of medical education, from undergraduate to continuing medical education. In an effort to frame the successes and failures of various attempts at integrating active learning into healthcare curricula, a group of educators from the A. B. Baker Section o...

Ending student mistreatment: early successes and continuing challenges.
Authors: Lind KT, Osborne CM, Badesch B, Blood A, Lowenstein SR Abstract Problem: Student mistreatment represents an ongoing challenge for US medical schools. Students experiencing mistreatment may become marginalized and cynical, and they have higher rates of burnout, depression and substance use disorders. Although numerous attempts to eliminate mistreatment have been proposed, best practices remain elusive. We formed a unique student-faculty collaboration (the Ending Mistreatment Task Force) that allowed all voices to be heard and enabled identification of five interventions to reduce mistreatment.Intervention: ...

The Medical Education Partnership Initiative: Strengthening Human Resources to End AIDS and Improve Health in Africa
Faced with a critical shortage of physicians in Africa, which hampered the efforts of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) was established in 2010 to increase the number of medical graduates, the quality of their education, and their retention in Africa. To summarize the accomplishments of the initiative, lessons learned, and remaining challenges, the authors conducted a narrative review of MEPI—from the perspectives of the U.S. government funding agencies and implementing agencies—by reviewing reports from grantee institutions and conductin...

A hands-on introduction to medical physics and radiation therapy for middle school students.
Abstract Lesson plans were developed to present concepts of medical physics and radiation therapy to a middle school audience. These workshop learning units relied on hands-on participation and collaboration within student groups to acquaint students with computed tomography simulation and treatment planning processes. These lesson plans were delivered at two different educational outreach programs targeted at student groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The lesson plans are scheduled to be delivered at a third program in the futur...
