Treatment of allergic reactions and quality of life among caregivers of food-allergic children.
CONCLUSION: The effect of epinephrine use on caregiver QoL is conditional and depends on reaction severity. Having multiple FAIs and FAIs with multiple food allergies was associated with worsening QoL. Further studies are needed to better understand the effects of treating an allergic reaction on caregiver QoL. PMID: 25660416 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Evaluation of Penicillin Allergy in the Hospitalized Patient: Opportunities for Antimicrobial Stewardship
This article reviews historical and contemporary innovations in inpatient penicillin allergy testing and its impact on antimicrobial stewardship.Recent FindingsAdoption of the electronic medical record allows rapid identification of admitted patients carrying a penicillin allergy diagnosis. Collaboration with clinical pharmacists and the development of computerized clinical guidelines facilitates increased testing and appropriate use of penicillin and related β-lactams. Education of patients and their outpatient providers is the key to retaining the benefits of penicillin allergy de-labeling.SummaryPenicillin allergy test...

A Quality Improvement Initiative to Improve Primary Care Referral Rates for Penicillin Allergy Delabeling
CONCLUSION: Referrals to the allergist for confirmatory testing in patients with listed penicillin allergies increased by more than 10 fold. This study illustrates successful tools to support delabeling.PMID:34352357 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2021.07.027

Proceedings of a Roundtable Conducted by the American College of Allergy, Asthma & amp; Immunology on Racial Disparities in Atopic Dermatitis and Food Allergy
Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol. 2022 Dec 17:S1081-1206(22)02001-4. doi: 10.1016/j.anai.2022.12.017. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtopic dermatitis (AD) and food allergies are more prevalent and more severe in people with skin of color than White individuals. The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI) sought to understand the effects of racial disparities among patients with skin of color with AD and food allergies. ACAAI surveyed its members (N=200 completed), conducted interviews with healthcare providers and advocacy leaders, and hosted a roundtable to explore the challenges of diagnosis and management...

Pediatric allergy and immunology in Brazil
Abstract The subspecialty of pediatric allergy and immunology in Brazil is in its early years and progressing steadily. This review highlights the research developed in the past years aiming to show the characteristics of allergic and immunologic diseases in this vast country. Epidemiologic studies demonstrated the high prevalence of asthma in infants, children, and adolescents. Mortality rates and average annual variation of asthma hospitalization have reduced in all pediatric age groups. Indoor aeroallergen exposure is excessively high and contributes to the high rates of allergy sensitization. Prevalence of food allergy...

EAACI Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Guidelines: managing patients with food allergy in the community
Abstract The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Guidelines, managing patients with food allergy (FA) in the community, intend to provide guidance to reduce the risk of accidental allergic reactions to foods in the community. This document is intended to meet the needs of early‐childhood and school settings as well as providers of non‐prepackaged food (e.g., restaurants, bakeries, takeaway, deli counters, and fast‐food outlets) and targets the audience of individuals with FA, their families, patient organizations, the general public, policymakers, and allergists. F...

The development and implementation of a training package for dietitians on cow’s milk protein allergy in infants and children based on UK RCPCH competencies for food allergies – a pilot study
Conclusions Educating dietitians using the format of one day teaching with pre and post course assessment has improved both knowledge and competencies in the diagnosis and management of cow’s milk protein allergy. Further courses in other areas of food allergy could be developed using this approach within the UK and worldwide.

Accidental exposures to peanut in a large cohort of Canadian children with peanut allergy
Conclusion Despite increased awareness, accidental exposures continue to occur, mainly at home, and most are managed inappropriately by both health care professionals and caregivers. Consequently, more education is required on the importance of strict allergen avoidance and the need for prompt and correct management of anaphylaxis.

Drug allergy: diagnosis and management of drug allergy in adults, children and young people; a look at NICE guidance
Background When any patient uses a medicine, it has the ability to cause a noxious and unintended response known as an ‘adverse drug reaction’ (ADR). A drug allergy is defined as an ADR with specific clinical features compatible with an immunological mechanism that re-occurs on re-exposure to that offending drug. Sometimes, it can be a challenge to decide from the clinical history alone as to whether a drug reaction is allergic or not without the need for further investigations. Information about current guideline In September 2014, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published a guidel...

A Proactive Approach to Penicillin Allergy Testing in Hospitalized Patients
Conclusions Penicillin allergy testing using a physician-pharmacist team model effectively removes reported allergies in hospitalized patients. The electronic medical record is a valuable asset for locating and stratifying individuals who benefit most from intervention. Proactive testing substantially reduces unnecessary inpatient and outpatient use of beta-lactam alternatives that may otherwise go unaddressed.

The Quest for Food Allergy Treatments: On Course and Gaining Steam …Finally
In the past decade, food allergy has become the largest unmet need among patients served by practicing allergists. This is due to a combination of a dramatic increase in the prevalence of food allergies, a lack of definitive therapy, and a reduction in unmet need for other common allergic diseases. Fortunately, appropriate forces have now mobilized to address the food allergy problem. This is analogous to an armada of military ships, including the “mother ship” of patients and doctors, together with “support ships” such as the NIH, FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education), physician specialty organizations such a...

Harmonization of Terminology for Tolerated and Reactive Dose in Food Allergy Immunotherapy
Publication date: Available online 14 December 2018Source: The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In PracticeAuthor(s): Thomas B. Casale, Tmirah Haselkorn, Christina E. Ciaccio, Panida Sriaroon, Bradley E. ChippsAbstractCurrently, there is no FDA-approved therapy for food allergy. Several new potential treatments are under investigation, including food allergen immunotherapy via various routes of administration, such as oral immunotherapy, epicutaneous therapy, subcutaneous immunotherapy, and sublingual immunotherapy. The double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge has traditionally been used for diagnostic pu...
