Exploring the Experiences and Impacts of Research Role-Emerging Placements in Physiotherapy
CONCLUSIONS: RREPs are valuable placement opportunities for learners in Canadian physiotherapy programmes facilitating the development of essential competencies in a non-traditional setting. RREPs could be considered as a placement opportunity for other allied health programmes, as the skills gained are beneficial for all health care professionals.PMID:37736402 | PMC:PMC10510540 | DOI:10.3138/ptc-2021-0085

Teaching Clinical Reasoning in  the Preclinical Period
CONCLUSION: Our Introduction to Clinical Reasoning course offers students repeated exposure to well-selected cases to promote their development of clinical reasoning. The course is an example of how clinical reasoning can be taught across the preclinical curriculum without extensive faculty training in medical education or clinical reasoning theory. The course can be adapted into different instructional formats to cover a variety of topics to provide the early learner with sequential exposure and practice in diagnostic reasoning.PMID:37738179 | DOI:10.1093/milmed/usad370

Recent Advances in Surgical Simulation For Resident Education
AbstractPurpose of ReviewSurgical simulation has become a cornerstone for the training of surgical residents, especially for urology residents. Urology as a specialty bolsters a diverse range of procedures requiring a variety of technical skills ranging from open and robotic surgery to endoscopic procedures. While hands-on supervised training on patients still remains the foundation of residency training and education, it may not be sufficient to achieve proficiency for graduation even if case minimums are achieved. It has been well-established that simulation-based education (SBE) can supplement residency training and ach...

Making Radiation Oncology specialty more attractive to young medical graduates: pulling back the invisibility curtain
ConclusionIncreasing the presence of Radiation Oncology at the School of Medicine may be one solution to achieve greater attractiveness among future residents. Likewise, extending the training period to five years could help to enhance the learning of all radiotherapy techniques while promoting clinical research.

Are Social Deprivation and Low Traditional Health Literacy Associated With Higher PROMIS CAT Completion in Orthopaedic Surgery?
CONCLUSION: Within an urban, socioeconomically diverse, orthopaedic patient population, health literacy was associated with PROMIS CAT questionnaire completion. Lower health literacy levels increased the likelihood of not completing any part of the assigned PROMIS CAT questionnaires. Additionally, patients completed PROMIS CAT without fully understanding the questions. This indicates that patient completion does not guarantee comprehension of the questions nor validity of their scores, even more so among patients with low health literacy. This is a substantive concern for fidelity of data gathered from PROMIS CAT.CLINICAL ...

Innovation During Cardiovascular Training, An Unmet Need
With the rapid advancement of technology, cardiovascular medicine has seen some of the highest degrees of clinical innovation [1]. Though academic institutions are often the center of change, innovation has rarely been formally incorporated into cardiovascular training programs in this country. Unfortunately, attempts to include innovation as a core component of the cardiovascular fellowship curriculum are deterred by limitations such as funding, mentorship, and most notably time. Despite these challenges, we must find ways to make participation in these programs more feasible and accessible to post graduate medical trainees.

Pain Education and Knowledge (PEAK) Consensus Guidelines for Neuromodulation: A Proposal for Standardization in Fellowship and Training Programs
J Pain Res. 2023 Sep 13;16:3101-3117. doi: 10.2147/JPR.S424589. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe need to be competent in neuromodulation is and should be a prerequisite prior to completing a fellowship in interventional pain medicine. Unfortunately, many programs lack acceptable candidates for these advanced therapies, and fellows may not receive adequate exposure to neuromodulation procedures. The American Society of Pain and Neuroscience (ASPN) desires to create a consensus of experts to set a minimum standard of competence for neurostimulation procedures, including spinal cord stimulation (SCS), dorsal root ganglion stimula...

Online Core Curriculum and Mastery (OCCAM): A Behavioral Neurology & amp; Neuropsychiatry (BNNP) Curricular Needs Assessment
J Neuropsychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2023 Sep 20:appineuropsych20230014. doi: 10.1176/appi.neuropsych.20230014. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBehavioral neurology & neuropsychiatry (BNNP) fellowships are accredited by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS). Programs cover the UCNS-recommended topics differently. A curriculum accessible to all fellowships would standardize education and identify gaps in topics that are less well covered across programs. The purpose of the present needs assessment was to inform the development of the Online Core Curriculum and Mastery: BNNP (OCCAM-BNNP), a website for all UC...

The Man Who Thinks He Can Live Forever
In a neat little neighborhood in Venice, Calif., there’s a block of squat, similar homes, filled with mortals spending their finite days on the planet eating pizza with friends, blowing out candles on birthday cakes, and binging late-night television. Halfway down the street, there’s a cavernous black modern box. This is where Bryan Johnson is working on what he calls “the most significant revolution in the history of Homo sapiens.”  [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] Johnson, 46, is a centimillionaire tech entrepreneur who has spent most of the last three years in pursuit of a si...

South Korea, a science spending champion, proposes cutbacks
South Korea’s government surprised many of the nation’s scientists last month when it abruptly proposed cutting research spending by 10.9% in 2024 and shifting resources into a number of new initiatives, including efforts to build rockets, pursue high-risk biomedical research, and build a U.S.-style biotech innovation ecosystem similar to the one that has grown up around Boston. Officials said the dramatic restructuring—which could end a decadeslong surge in science spending that has helped make South Korea a global research force—was needed to help tame growing budget deficits and to focus resources on the mo...
