Surveillance and Genomics of Toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O1 From Fish, Phytoplankton and Water in Lake Victoria, Tanzania
This study reports the occurrence of multidrug resistant V. cholerae O1 in Lake Victoria that are genetically closely related to recent pandemic strains in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. The strains identified are also closely related to older pandemic strains recovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Tanzania up until 1993, suggesting a long-term persistence and wide spatial distribution of pandemic strains within the region with the lake serving as a reservoir. These environmental isolates likely emerged from previous cholera outbreaks and survived in the lake environment for decades through various relatio...

Antimicrobial Activity of Lactobacillus Species Against Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae
Conclusion: Some Lactobacillus strains exhibit anti-CRE activity, which suggests potential applications for controlling or preventing CRE colonization or infection. Introduction Although Enterobacteriaceae are normal flora of the human intestinal system, they are also common pathogens causing human infections in the setting of both community-acquired and healthcare-associated infections (Hsueh et al., 2010; Toh et al., 2012; Lai et al., 2014; Jean et al., 2016). In this era of widespread antibiotic resistance, Enterobacteriaceae are no exception. Recently, the emergence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (C...

A review on environmental monitoring of water organic pollutants identified by EU guidelines
Publication date: 15 February 2018 Source:Journal of Hazardous Materials, Volume 344 Author(s): João C.G. Sousa, Ana R. Ribeiro, Marta O. Barbosa, M. Fernando R. Pereira, Adrián M.T. Silva The contamination of fresh water is a global concern. The huge impact of natural and anthropogenic organic substances that are constantly released into the environment, demands a better knowledge of the chemical status of Earth’s surface water. Water quality monitoring studies have been performed targeting different substances and/or classes of substances, in different regions of the world, using different types of sampling strategi...

The Prevalence of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-Producing Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia Coli in Poultry Chickens and Variation According to Farming Practices in Punjab, India
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that unregulated use of clinically relevant antimicrobials in Indian broiler and layer farms may contribute to the emergence of resistance and support the need to curb the nontherapeutic use of medically important antimicrobials in food animal production. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP292 Received: 31 March 2016 Revised: 16 December 2016 Accepted: 17 December 2016 Published: 20 July 2017 Address correspondence to R. Semi-continuous pharmaceutical and human tracer monitoring by POCIS sampling at the watershed-scale in an agricultural rural headwater river
Publication date: Available online 31 July 2018Source: Journal of Hazardous MaterialsAuthor(s): Robin Guibal, Sophie Lissalde, Yoann Brizard, Gilles GuibaudABSTRACTPharmaceutical monitoring (37 pharmaceuticals and 3 human tracers) was conducted in a headwater streams in southwest France, an area characterized by a low population density with an elderly population (30%> 60 years old) and extensive agriculture (cow cattle breeding). Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler (POCIS) were exposed for 14-day consecutive periods in 2016 at three sampling points. Three human wastewater tracers and 20 pharmaceuticals commonly use...

Unveiling the Antibiotic Susceptibility and Antimicrobial Potential of Bacteria from Human Breast Milk of Pakistani Women: An Exploratory Study
CONCLUSION: This study has added to the data of the antibiotic and antimicrobial activity of some probiotic bacteria from some samples of Pakistani women breast milk. Probiotic bacteria are usually considered to decrease gastrointestinal tract diseases by adhering to the gut epithelial and reducing population of pathogens and in the case of Streptococcus lactarius MB622 and Streptococcus salivarius MB620 in terms of hydrophobicity and exclusion of indicator pathogenic strains.PMID:37377461 | PMC:PMC10292949 | DOI:10.1155/2023/6399699

Application of (V)UV/O < sub > 3 < /sub > technology for post-treatment of biologically treated wastewater: A pilot-scale study
Chemosphere. 2021 Feb 23;275:130080. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2021.130080. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFor the first time, high energy VUV photons and generation of O3 by (V)UV lamps were applied together for removal of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from biologically treated wastewater (BTWW) in pilot-scale. The core of the pilot container unit was a photoreactor assembly consisting of six photoreactors, each containing a low-pressure Hg lamp (UV dose of 1.2 J/cm2 and 6.6 J/cm2 at 185 nm and 254 nm, respectively). BTWW was irradiated (4.75 min residence time) by (V)UV light in presence of in situ photochemic...

Simultaneous sulfamethoxazole degradation with electricity generation by microbial fuel cells using Ni-MOF-74 as cathode catalysts and quantification of antibiotic resistance genes
Environ Res. 2021 Mar 25:111054. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2021.111054. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntibiotic wastewater presents serious challenges in water treatment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received significant attention as promising precursors and sacrificial templates in the preparation of porous carbon-supported catalysts. Herein, we investigated the sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation and electrochemical performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) that applied as-prepared Ni-MOF-74 and Ni-N-C (Ni-MOF-74 underwent pyrolysis treatment at different temperatures) as air-cathode catalyst. Firstly, the electroca...

Enhanced electro-Fenton catalytic performance with in-situ grown Ce/Fe@NPC-GF as self-standing cathode: Fabrication, influence factors and mechanism
Chemosphere. 2021 Mar 16:130269. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2021.130269. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHeterogeneous electro-Fenton (E-F) is considered as an attractive technique for efficient removal of refractory organic pollutants in wastewater. The regeneration of FeII and catalyst reusability are key issues for effective and sustainable degradation. Developing binder-free iron phase/carbon composite cathode is a feasible strategy. In this work, the stable Ce/Fe-nanoporous carbon modified graphite felt electrode (Ce/Fe@NPC-GF) was fabricated using in situ solvothermal method and subsequent carbonization treatment, whic...
