A survey on consciousness towards the proper use of metformin and medical cost in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes
In conclusion, many patients with type 2 diabetes taking metformin were not satisfied with their treatments, with the main reason being high medical cost. Moreover, they did not have sufficient knowledge of sick days and/or lactic acidosis.PMID:34857991 | PMC:PMC8611363 | DOI:10.3164/jcbn.21-5

Epigenetic clock analysis of diet, exercise, education, and lifestyle factors.
Abstract Behavioral and lifestyle factors have been shown to relate to a number of health-related outcomes, yet there is a need for studies that examine their relationship to molecular aging rates. Toward this end, we use recent epigenetic biomarkers of age that have previously been shown to predict all-cause mortality, chronic conditions, and age-related functional decline. We analyze cross-sectional data from 4,173 postmenopausal female participants from the Women's Health Initiative, as well as 402 male and female participants from the Italian cohort study, Invecchiare nel Chianti.Extrinsic epigenetic age accel...

Metformin add-on vs. antipsychotic switch vs. continued antipsychotic treatment plus healthy lifestyle education in overweight or obese youth with severe mental illness: results from the IMPACT trial.
Abstract Antipsychotics are used for many psychiatric conditions in youth. Although developmentally inappropriate weight gain and metabolic abnormalities, which are risk factors for premature cardiovascular mortality, are especially frequent in youth, optimal strategies to reduce pediatric antipsychotic-induced overweight/obesity are unclear. The Improving Metabolic Parameters in Antipsychotic Child Treatment (IMPACT) was a randomized, parallel group, 24-week clinical trial which enrolled overweight/obese, psychiatrically stable youth, aged 8-19 years, with a DSM-IV diagnosis of severe mental illness (schizophren...

The Disparity in the Management of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome between Obstetrician-Gynecologists in Different-Level Hospitals under the Hierarchical Medical System
CONCLUSION: Our study uncovered differences in the endocrine evaluation, metabolic screening, and management of PCOS patients across obstetrics and gynecology at various hospital levels. Simultaneously, it underlines the need to improve the hierarchical medical system and close the knowledge gap across hospitals.PMID:36158894 | PMC:PMC9499778 | DOI:10.1155/2022/9778678

Prescribing patterns and outcomes among patients treated for gestational diabetes mellitus
This study aimed to identify the most commonly prescribed agents for treating GDM, along with the maternal and fetal outcomes associated with their use. Electronic medical records were used to identify the medications prescribed for GDM at a large health system. Data were collected comparing medication failure rate, maternal weight gain, and incidence of fetal macrosomia, neonatal hypoglycemia, and premature delivery between the agents used. Of the 368 patients who met the inclusion criteria, 76.9% were initiated on glyburide, 13.6% were initiated on metformin, 8.2% were initiated on insulin, and 1.4% were initiated on a c...
