Here today, gone tomorrow: The laa and stroke
Stroke prevention in the setting of non-valvular atrial fibrillation continues to attract great clinical interest,[1,2] the result of several known issues including: 1) the high morbidity and mortality associated with stroke which is the number one cause of death and disability, 2) the frequency of non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) and its association with an increased incidence of stroke – greater than 20% of strokes particularly in elderly patients are related to the NVAF, 3) the findings that approximately 90% of strokes in this setting are related to thrombus in the left atrial appendage (LAA),[3] 4) anticoagul...

New thrombolytic strategy providing neuroprotection in experimental ischemic stroke: MMP10 alone or in combination with tissue-type plasminogen activator
ConclusionThese results show that MMP10, either alone or in combination with tPA, might represent a new strategy for thrombolysis in ischemic stroke, providing higher protection against cerebrovascular damage.

Abstract 226: Strokes Worse in Women at 24 hours but Severity Reduced in Younger Women With Hormone Therapy Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusion: Women in this study had more severe 24 hour AIS outcomes than men but this improved with HRT use in women younger than 80 years. This cannot be fully explained by age differences as there could be other underlying factors. Improving 24 hour NIHSS may correctly predict later outcomes following AIS. Further study of HRT use in AIS outcomes is justified.

Abstract 116: Relationship of Stroke Unit Status With Quality of Care and Outcome for Acute Stroke Patients: Results From China National Stroke Registry II Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: Our study showed that processes of care of AIS were better in patients in hospitals with stroke units. However, patients in hospitals with stroke units didn’t performance differences in clinical outcomes after discharge.

Endovascular Therapy for Acute Stroke
Stroke is the most common cause of permanent disability, the second most common cause of dementia, and the fourth most common cause of death in the Western world. Recently, based on positive multicenter randomized clinical trials, endovascular therapy for acute stroke has undergone a revolution. Routine mechanical thrombectomy in addition to intravenous thrombolysis has been shown to provide excellent outcomes for patients with proximal anterior circulation occlusions. This procedure reduces disability and benefits are seen across a wide range of age and initial stroke severity.

Ischaemic stroke and liver fibrosis
Stroke is the sudden onset of acute neurological injury arising as a result of cerebral haemorrhage or ischaemia. It is common and serious, with 16.9 million incident strokes deduced to have occurred in 2010 causing 5.9 million deaths worldwide. It is also a major cause of disability, incurring a significant healthcare burden. Ischaemic stroke is responsible for about 80% of cases in the developed world. Focal ischaemia results from blockage of a blood vessel by a thrombus or embolus, preventing blood supply to a region of the brain [1].

Prevalence and Prognostic Features of ECG Abnormalities in Acute Stroke
Conclusions About 4 in 5 acute stroke patients in this African cohort had evidence of a baseline ECG abnormality, but presence of any atrial enlargement was the only independent ECG predictor of death or disability.

Prestroke treatment with beta-blockers for hypertension is not associated with severity and poor outcome in patients with ischemic stroke: data from a national stroke registry
Background: Beta-blockers are not recommended as the initial therapy for hypertension. Reports on associations between use of beta-blockers and stroke severity are inconclusive. We assessed associations between prestroke use of beta-blockers and stroke severity, poststroke disability and death in a large group of hypertensive patients hospitalized with acute ischemic stroke. Methods: All 3915 patients with ischemic stroke, treated prestroke for hypertension and registered in the National Acute Stroke ISraeli, were included. Treatment for hypertension was classified by medication type (beta-blockers, diuretics, calcium ant...

Cardiovascular Disease and Patterns of Change in Functional Status Over 15 Years: Findings From the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study Epidemiology
ConclusionsThis study documents that a decline in FS precedes incidence of CVD‐related hospitalization by at least 2 years, providing a strong argument for routine preventative assessment of FS among older adults.

African American Stroke Survivors: More Caregiving Time, but Less Caregiving Burden Original Article
Conclusions— Black stroke survivors received an average of 11 more hours of care than white stroke survivors without substantial differences in unmet need. Despite providing more hours of care, caregivers of black stroke were more positive about their caregiver role than caregivers of white stroke survivors.

Global Burden of Stroke.
Abstract On the basis of the GBD (Global Burden of Disease) 2013 Study, this article provides an overview of the global, regional, and country-specific burden of stroke by sex and age groups, including trends in stroke burden from 1990 to 2013, and outlines recommended measures to reduce stroke burden. It shows that although stroke incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years rates tend to decline from 1990 to 2013, the overall stroke burden in terms of absolute number of people affected by, or who remained disabled from, stroke has increased across the globe in both men and women of all ag...

Factors Associated With New-Onset Depression Following Ischemic Stroke: The Women's Health Initiative Epidemiology
ConclusionsThere is a difference in the relationship of prestroke psychosocial status and risk of NPSD depending on stroke severity; thus it may be that the same preventive interventions might not work for all stroke patients. One size does not fit all.

Hospital Variation in Functional Recovery After Stroke Original Articles
Conclusions— One third of acute ischemic stroke patients were functionally dependent or dead 3 months postacute stroke; functional recovery rates varied considerably among hospitals, supporting the need to better determine which care processes can maximize functional outcomes.
