Health Care Costs and Utilization of Dabigatran Compared With Warfarin for Secondary Stroke Prevention in Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation: A Retrospective Population Study
Conclusions: The use of dabigatran is associated with lower emergency department and all-cause hospitalization costs but greater outpatient costs in a real-world, NVAF patient population compared with warfarin.

Comparative Cardiovascular Risks of Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors: Analyses of Real-world Data in Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to sitagliptin therapy, saxagliptin, linagliptin, and gemigliptin therapies were all associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular events. PMID: 29671284 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

10-year nationwide trends of the incidence, prevalence, and adverse outcomes of non-valvular atrial fibrillation nationwide health insurance data covering the entire Korean population
Conclusions The burden of AF among Asian patients is increasing. Although the overall risks of cardiovascular events and death following AF onset have decreased over a decade, the event rates are still high. Optimized management of any associated comorbidities should be part of the holistic management approach for patients with AF.

Impact of Sociodemographic and Clinical Factors on Health-Related Quality of Life in Older Adults With Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most commonly sustained cardiac rhythm disorder in the world (Ball, Carrington, McMurray,& Stewart, 2013). AF prevalence is increasing parallel to the aging population, making AF the most prevalent arrhythmia in patients older than 65 (Karamichalakis et al., 2015). According to the National Health Insurance Service database in Korea, the prevalence of AF in Korea is approximately 0.5% in adults ages 40 to 59 and 4.2% in adults ages 60 to 79 (Lee, Choi, Han, Cha,& Oh, 2017). AF is an important contributing factor to ischemic stroke and thromboembolism

Prevalence of Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation Based on Geographical Distribution and Socioeconomic Status in the Entire Korean Population.
CONCLUSIONS: Geographical location of residence and income levels were closely associated with the prevalence of AF and antithrombotic therapy utilization. This information may provide further insights for more effective surveillance of AF and stroke prevention for improved clinical outcomes. PMID: 29968435 [PubMed]

A novel algorithm for identifying risk factors for rare events: Predicting transient ischemic attack in young patients with low-risk atrial fibrillation
Publication date: February 2018Source: Journal of Applied Biomedicine, Volume 16, Issue 1Author(s): Chieh-Yu Liu, Hui-Chun ChenAbstractIdentification of risk factors for transient ischemic attack (TIA) is crucial for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, identifying risk factors in young patients with low-risk AF is difficult, because the incidence of TIA in such patients is very low, which would result in traditional multiple logistic regression not being able to successfully identify the risk factors in such patients. Therefore, a novel algorithm for identifying risk factors for TIA is necessary. We thus propo...

Antithrombotic Medication and the Risk of Vitreous Hemorrhage in Atrial Fibrillation: Korean National Health Insurance Service National Cohort.
CONCLUSION: Dual antiplatelet or triple therapy increased the risk of VH significantly, compared to warfarin monotherapy. Considering the low efficacy of preventing ischemic stroke and high risk of bleeding, dual or triple therapy using warfarin and antiplatelet agents should be avoided to prevent VH in AF patients. Use of oral anticoagulants in the treatment of non-valvular atrial fibrillation in France: Patient characteristics from the NAXOS cohort study
ConclusionsThe NAXOS study confirms the widespread use of OAC treatments in France, suggesting differences between cohorts for age, gender and comorbidities. Thanks to large cohort sizes and prolonged follow-up, longitudinal analyses will allow assessment of real-life effects of OAC therapy in NVAF.

Temporal Trends of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Implantations: a Nationwide Population-based Study.
CONCLUSIONS: The number of CIED implantation increased substantially from 2009 to 2016 in Korea. Also, the patients with CIED have been changed to be older and have more comorbidities. Therefore, the burden of health care cost in patients with CIED would be expected to increase in the future. PMID: 31074230 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
