Testosterone Treatments Aren ’ t Linked to Heart Risks When Patients Are Carefully Monitored, Study Finds
Advertisements for treatments for “low T,” or low testosterone levels in middle-aged and older men, have led to spikes in demand. But the safety and legitimacy of those testosterone therapies hasn’t been clear. In a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting, researchers provide the most conclusive evidence yet that testosterone treatments appear to be safe for the heart and are not associated with an increased risk of certain heart-related events. In the study, led by researchers at the Cleveland Clinic, more than 5,200 men age...

Association of polycystic ovary syndrome with cardiovascular disease among US female hospitalizations
CONCLUSIONS: PCOS is associated with CVD events and the association is mediated by obesity and metabolic syndrome conditions, particularly among hospitalized women less than or equal to age 40 years in the US.PMID:37307574 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvad067

Value of ATRIA stroke risk score in predicting atrial high ‐rate episodes: A comparison of six different risk scores
ConclusionAHRE is common in patients with a CIED. In this context, several risk scoring systems have been used to predict the development of AHRE in patients with a CIED. This study's findings revealed that The ATRIA stroke risk scoring system performed better than other commonly used risk scoring systems in predicting AHRE.

Social bias in artificial intelligence algorithms designed to improve cardiovascular risk assessment relative to the Framingham Risk Score: a protocol for a systematic review
This study will employ an equity-lens to identify sources of bias (ie, race/ethnicity, gender and social stratum) in ML algorithms designed to improve CVD risk assessment relative to the FRS. A comprehensive literature search will be completed using MEDLINE, Embase and IEEE to answer the research question: do AI algorithms that are designed for the estimation of CVD risk and that compare performance with the FRS address the sources of bias inherent in the FRS? No study date filters will be imposed on the search, but English language filters will be applied. Studies describing a specific algorithm or ML approach that provid...

Substances of abuse and cardiovascular risk: cannabinoids
G Ital Cardiol (Rome). 2023 Jun;24(6):455-465. doi: 10.1714/4041.40205.ABSTRACTProgressive legalization for medical conditions or recreational use has led to an increased use of cannabis and synthetic cannabinoids over the past years. Most consumers are young and healthy, without cardiovascular risk factors; however, this population is expected to include older individuals. Thus, concerns have arisen about safety and short- and long-term potential adverse effects, with special emphasis on vulnerable groups. Studies show that cannabis might be linked with thrombosis, inflammation, and atherosclerosis, and many reports have ...

Evaluation of the effect of sodium zirconium cyclosilicate on arrhythmia-related cardiovascular outcomes in patients receiving chronic haemodialysis with hyperkalaemia: protocol for the multicentre, randomised, controlled DIALIZE-Outcomes study
Introduction Patients with kidney failure receiving chronic haemodialysis have elevated risk of arrhythmias potentially increasing the likelihood of sudden cardiac death, stroke and hospitalisation. The DIALIZE study (NCT03303521) demonstrated that sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) was an efficacious and well-tolerated treatment for predialysis hyperkalaemia in patients undergoing haemodialysis. The DIALIZE-Outcomes study evaluates the effect of SZC on sudden cardiac death and arrhythmia-related cardiovascular outcomes in patients receiving chronic haemodialysis with recurrent hyperkalaemia. Methods and analysis Intern...

Cost Effectiveness of Strategies to Manage Atrial Fibrillation in Middle- and High-Income Countries: A Systematic Review
ConclusionThis systematic review has shown that there are several cost-effective strategies to manage AF in different resource settings. However, the decision to use any strategy should be guided by objective clinical and economic evidence supported by sound clinical judgement.RegistrationCRD42022360590.

Prediction of underlying atrial fibrillation in patients with a cryptogenic stroke: results from the NOR-FIB Study
ConclusionClinical risk scores may guide a personalized evaluation approach in CS patients. Increasing awareness of the usage of available AF-predicting scores may optimize the arrhythmia detection pathway in stroke units.

Predictors of participation in atrial fibrillation screening among community residents in China
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia and affects 33.5 to 46.3 million people worldwide.1,2 China faces a similar challenge of AF burden. According to a national epidemiology study, at least 790 million adults aged 45 or older have been diagnosed with AF in China.3 An increase in the incidence and prevalence of AF is expected due to population aging, surging cardiovascular risk factors, and accumulating comorbidities (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, obesity).4 AF could increase the risk of stroke, and at least a quarter of ischemic stroke cases are caused by AF.

The prognostic role of right ventricular dysfunction in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
AbstractHypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) primarily affects the left ventricle (LV) sparing the right ventricle (RV) in vast majority of cases. However, several studies employing CMR have revealed that myocardial hypertrophy may also involve the RV. To assess RV size and function in a large prospectively cohort of HCM patients and to evaluate whether these parameters in association with other MR findings can predict cardiac events. Two participating centers prospectively included patients with known or suspected HCM between 2011 and 2017. CMR studies were performed with three different scanners. Outcome measures were a com...

CIB2 Is a Novel Endogenous Repressor of Atrial Remodeling
CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that CIB2 represents a novel endogenous and atrial-enriched regulator that protects against atrial remodeling and AF under stress conditions. Therefore, CIB2 may represent a new potential target for treating AF.PMID:37128899 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.122.062660
