A randomized placebo-controlled, double-blind study to investigate the effect of a high oral loading dose of cholecalciferol in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients, new insights on serum STAT-3 and hepassocin
CONCLUSIONS: Cholecalciferol is recommended as additional therapy to modulate lipid peroxidation and systemic inflammation alongside other NAFLD therapies.PMID:37667938 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202308_33413

Study of okra pectin prepared by sweeping frequency ultrasound/freeze-thaw pretreatment on corrosion inhibition of ANSI 304 stainless steel in acidic environment
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 29:126587. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126587. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGreen and efficient metal corrosion inhibitors are very essential, and natural okra pectin (OP) can fulfill this need with rational use of resources. OP was prepared by water-alcohol extraction method after freeze-thaw pretreatment (FTP)/sweeping frequency ultrasound pretreatment (SFUP), and used for corrosion inhibition of ANSI 304 stainless steel (304 SS) in 1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl). The molecular weight, hydrodynamic diameter and monosaccharide composition of OP were analyzed to determine the factors on the cor...

The benefit of metformin in the treatment of pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Conclusion: According to the data of this meta-analysis, treatment with metformin failed to statistically improve liver enzymes but may be beneficial in the improvement of lipid parameters and insulin metabolism regulation in pediatric patients with NAFLD. As there are not enough available studies in the literature, the influence of metformin on liver ultrasonography or histology in pediatric NAFLD should be further analyzed in future studies. What is Known:• Lifestyle modification with weight loss through physical activity and dietary modification is the recommended treatment option for pediatric NAFLD.• Metformin may ...

Lignin-ultrasound method: Enhancement of antimicrobial capacity of MoS < sub > 2 < /sub > -containing films
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 24:126509. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126509. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo improve the antimicrobial ability of MoS2-containing films, we used lignin and triple-frequency ultrasound for liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) to obtain MoS2 nanosheets. Photoresponsive antimicrobial films with MoS2 nanosheets, lignin, polyvinyl alcohol and deep eutectic solvents were subsequently prepared. Lignin functionalized the MoS2 nanosheets by chemically linking with S in MoS2 and significantly improved the exfoliation efficiency. Tri-frequency ultrasound produces beneficial effects on the LPE process by cr...

Liver Fat Storage Is a Better Predictor of Coronary Artery Disease than Visceral Fat
This study measured associations among visceral fat storage, fatty liver, insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, and CAD. Patients were divided into three groups: excess visceral fat (visceral fat area >330 ± 99 cm2), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and a control group. The definition of fatty liver is liver minus spleen density greater than or equal to -10. We defined early atherosclerosis as intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery >7 mm in men and >0.65 mm in women, measured with Doppler ultrasound. Visceral fat area was defined using CT (>330 ± 99 cm2). Insulin-resistance biomarkers (H...

Novel predictors of early atherosclerosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
CONCLUSIONS: Serum endocan levels, MPV and CIMT could be considered as good predictors of endothelial dysfunction and therefore early detection of subclinical atherosclerosis in NAFLD patients.PMID:37502438 | PMC:PMC10369661 | DOI:10.5114/ceh.2023.127466

Prevalence and clinical outcomes in subtypes of metabolic associated fatty liver disease
CONCLUSION: This population-based study proves the concept that subtypes of MAFLD can help risk stratification of clinical outcomes.PMID:37491179 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2023.07.010

Clinical Practice Guidelines For the Management of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Systematic Review
ConclusionsThe included CPGs provided a comprehensive approach, emphasizing the evaluation of risk factors, utilization of the BCLC staging system, and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. Regular surveillance using ultrasound for cirrhotic patients was widely recommended. An understanding of contemporary international CPGs can prioritize aspects of the management of HCC to assist healthcare professionals to develop a national guideline to enable standardized, comprehensive, and evidence-based care for patients with HCC.

Ambient PM2.5 components are associated with bone strength: evidence from a China multi-ethnic study
CONCLUSION: We found that long-term exposure to PM2.5 and its components may lead to reduced bone strength, suggesting that PM2.5 and its components may potentially increase the risk of osteoporosis and even fracture. Nitrate may be responsible for increasing its risk to a greater extent.PMID:37467163 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad425

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease incidence and remission and their predictors during 7 years follow-up among Finns
CONCLUSIONS: During the follow-up, NAFLD developed for every fifth participant without NAFLD at baseline, and a fifth of those with NAFLD at baseline had achieved NAFLD remission. NAFLD became more prevalent during the follow-up. From a clinical perspective, key factors predicting NAFLD incidence and remission were BMI and WC change independent of their baseline level.PMID:37463486 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad418
