High-Sensitivity C-reactive Protein and Intracranial Arterial Stenosis Predicted Recurrent Stroke and Dependence or Death in Minor Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack
CONCLUSION: Concomitant presence of increased hsCRP levels and ICAS was associated with increased risk of stroke recurrence and dependence or death in patients with minor ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack.PMID:37704441 | DOI:10.5551/jat.64229

Apixaban: A New Factor Xa Inhibitor for Stroke Prevention in Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke occurrence, severity, recurrence, and mortality. Anticoagulation therapy for the prevention of thromboembolism is critical in patients with AF who are at risk of stroke. Warfarin has been an efficacious anticoagulant for this purpose, but its use has been limited by frequent laboratory monitoring, drug interactions, unpredictable individual response, delayed onset of action, and bleeding. Apixaban is the second oral direct selective factor Xa inhibitor approved for the prevention of stroke/systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular AF. It was si...

Stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation—An Asian stroke perspective
Despite relatively lower prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in Asians (~1%) than in Caucasians (~2%), Asia has a much higher overall disease burden because of its proportionally larger aged population. For example, on the basis of reported age-adjusted prevalence rates and projected population figures in China, there will be an estimated 5.2 million men and 3.1 million women with AF older than 60 years by year 2050. Stroke is a disabling complication of AF that is of increasing cause for concern in Asians patients. Implementing consensus expert recommendations for managing stroke risk in patients with AF can considerab...

Underutilization of warfarin for stroke prophylaxis in patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter in Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: A high portion of AF/AFL patients with CHADS2 score ≥2 were undertreated with warfarin. As ischemic stroke is one of the leading causes of death in Korea, a more aggressive approach to prevent stroke in patients with AF/AFL is required. PMID: 26242197 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc Scores Predict the Risk of Ischemic Stroke Outcome in Patients with Interatrial Block without Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores may be predictors of risk of ischemic stroke or TIA in patients with IAB without AF. PMID: 27301462 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Treatment with TPA in the "Golden Hour" and the Shape of the 4.5 Hour Time-Benefit Curve in the National US Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Population.
CONCLUSIONS: -Thrombolysis started within the first 60 minutes after onset is associated with best outcomes for patients with acute ischemic stroke, and benefit declined more rapidly early after onset for ability to be discharged home. These findings support intensive efforts to organize stroke systems of care to improve the timeliness of thrombolytic therapy in acute ischemic stroke. Intravenous Recombinant Tissue Plasminogen Activator Therapy for Acute Basilar Artery Ischemic Stroke Following Transfemoral Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.
Authors: Montarello NJ, Nelson AJ, Sidharta SL, Worthley SG Abstract Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) can now be considered a standard of care for inoperable and high-risk surgical patients with severe aortic stenosis, and its uptake worldwide is rapidly increasing. Indeed, many centers performing the procedure have now moved towards treating intermediate-risk patients with TAVI rather than referring them for surgical aortic valve replacement. Although the incidence of peri-procedural acute and subacute stroke following TAVI has fallen to 2-5%, its occurrence can be life-threatening and life-changing,...

Abstract 122: Quality of Care for Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke as a Function of Hospital Intravenous Thrombolysis With Recombinant Tissue Plasminogen Activator Capability: Insights From China National Stroke Registry II Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: The CNSR II hospitals were associated with better performance in some of the hospitals but not all of them. The difference in conformity between rt-PA-capable hospitals and rt-PA-incapable hospitals was modest for performance measures of stroke care. However, more room for improvement still exists in key quality performance measures and further studies should be explored.

Abstract 160: Impact of Medication Adherence on Risk of Stroke, Major Bleeding and Other Outcomes in Atrial Fibrillation Patients Using Novel Oral Anticoagulants (Dabigatran and Rivaroxaban) Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusion: In our sample, adherence to NOACs was associated with a reduction in stroke and DVTPE risk but did not substantially increase bleeding risk. Further studies with newer NOACs are warranted.

Factors associated with non –vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants for stroke prevention in patients with new-onset atrial fibrillation: Results from the Outcomes Registry for Better Informed Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation II (ORBIT-AF II)
Conclusions In contemporary clinical practice, up to three-fourths of patients with new-onset AF are now initially treated with a NOAC for stroke prevention. Those selected for NOAC treatment had lower stroke and bleeding risk profiles, were more likely treated by cardiologists, and had higher socioeconomic status. The Involvement of miRNA in Carotid-Related Stroke.
Abstract Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. Stroke is associated with a marked disability burden and has a major economic impact; this is especially true for carotid artery stroke. Major advances in primary and secondary prevention during the last few decades have helped to tackle this public health problem. However, better knowledge of the physiopathology of stroke and its underlying genetic mechanisms is needed to improve diagnosis and therapy. miRNAs are an important, recently identified class of post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression and a...

Mortality of patients with previous stroke undergoing drug-eluting stent implantation
Objective: Patients with previous stroke are increasing among patients receiving percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DES); however, data about the influence of previous stroke on patient outcomes are limited. We evaluated whether previous stroke is associated with increased risk for mortality in coronary artery disease. Patients and methods: A total of 18 650 patients with coronary artery disease undergoing PCI with DES were enrolled. Databases from three real-world PCI registries were merged for a patient-level meta-analysis. The primary outcome was death from any cause. The secondary out...

Age Stratification and Impact of Eicosapentaenoic Acid and Docosahexaenoic Acid to Arachidonic Acid Ratios in Ischemic Stroke Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: The ratios of EPA/AA and DHA/AA could be specific markers for younger stroke patients. The EPA/AA ratio may be related to aortic arch calcification for elderly stroke patients and to multiple infarctions and cerebral white matter disease for middle-aged stroke patients.
