Role Of Sulfonylureas In Perihematomal Edema In Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage (N8.002)
Conclusions:Our study shows a trend towards decreased absolute PHE and better clinical outcomes in ICH patients with diabetes who are taking SUs. However, our findings are limited by the study design, low power, and imbalances in baseline ICH volume. Further studies are required to evaluate the role of SUs in attenuating PHE.Disclosure: Dr. Male has nothing to disclose. Dr. Robertson has nothing to disclose. Dr. Alkuwaiti has nothing to disclose. "Worth the Walk:" A Randomized Controlled Trial of a Walking Intervention to Decrease Stroke Risk Among Minority Seniors (S51.002)
Conclusions:We successfully implemented a community-partnered, culturally-tailored, sustainable program to increase walking in minority seniors. Preliminary data analysis suggests improvement in non-sustained increases in steps/day. Next steps include more extensive data analyses, including stakeholder interviews, and examination of participant-level and organizational features associated with more successful study outcomes and program implementation.Study Supported by: - University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Charles Drew University (CDU), Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research Center for Health Improvemen...

Association between Leucocyte Count and Perihematomal Edema Growth After Primary Intracerebral Hemorrhage (N8.001)
Conclusions:Higher admission leucocyte count, particularly monocyte count, is associated with PHE growth. This suggests a potential role of inflammation in modulating PHE after ICH.Study Supported by: American Academy of Neurology and American Brain Foundation Clinical Research Training FellowshipDisclosure: Dr. Gusdon has nothing to disclose. Utilizing CT with Maximum Intensity Projection Reconstruction Bypassing CTA Improves Time to Groin Puncture in Large Vessel Occlusion Stroke Thrombectomy
Background and Purpose: Prior to thrombectomy for proximal anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke, recent trials have utilized CT angiography (CTA) for vascular imaging immediately following noncontrast CT (NCCT) for decision-making, but thin-section NCCT with automated maximum intensity projection (MIP) reconstruction also has high accuracy in demonstrating the site of an occluding thrombus. We hypothesized that performing thin-section NCCT with MIP alone prior to thrombectomy improves the time to groin puncture (GP) compared to performing CTA after NCCT.Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospectiv...

Ischemic Stroke After Treatment of Intraprocedural Thrombosis During Stent-Assisted Coiling and Flow Diversion Brief Report
Conclusions—Current protocols for treatment of intraprocedural thrombosis associated with placement of intra-arterial devices were effective in preventing ischemic stroke in ≈80% of cases. Current smoking was the only independent predictor of ischemic stroke.

Diabetic aggravation of stroke and animal models.
Abstract Cerebral ischemia in diabetics results in severe brain damage. Different animal models of cerebral ischemia have been used to study the aggravation of ischemic brain damage in the diabetic condition. Since different disease conditions such as diabetes differently affect outcome following cerebral ischemia, the Stroke Therapy Academic Industry Roundtable (STAIR) guidelines recommends use of diseased animals for evaluating neuroprotective therapies targeted to reduce cerebral ischemic damage. The goal of this review is to discuss the technicalities and pros/cons of various animal models of cerebral ischemia...

Brazilian guidelines for endovascular treatment of patients with acute ischemic stroke
ABSTRACT These guidelines are the result of a joint effort from writing groups of the Brazilian Stroke Society, the Scientific Department of Cerebrovascular Diseases of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology, the Brazilian Stroke Network and the Brazilian Society of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Neuroradiology. Members from these groups participated in web-based discussion forums with predefined themes, followed by videoconference meetings in which controversies and position statements were discussed, leading to a consensus. This guidelines focuses on the implications of the recent clinical trials on endovascular therapy for acut...

Letter Re: Retraction: Risedronate Therapy For Prevention Of Hip Fracture After Stroke In Elderly Women; Risedronate Therapy For Prevention Of Hip Fracture After Stroke In Elderly Women: Reply From The Authors
I read with interest the retraction of 3 publications by Sato et al. in the July 12, 2016, issue of Neurology®.1–3 I was astonished to read a sentence by the retracting author, "that none of the coauthors participated in any misconduct and appeared as authors on an honorary basis only."1–3 Without an editorial comment about this sentence, an impression is created that appearing "as authors on an honorary basis only" is regarded as acceptable. Maybe the editors thought that this is already clear enough and self-evident for the reader. Unfortunately, honorary authorships are still part of current practice in ...

AEDs after ICH: Preventing the prophylaxis
Has the routine use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) become a habit too difficult to break? Adherents to evidence-based medicine must surely have a conniption in light of this continuing practice. The guidelines have remained clear over the years: Do not use antiseizure medications in ICH unless there has been a seizure. Yet prophylactic AED use after acute ICH remains widespread in the United States. This is brought to our attention in the current issue of Neurology®. Naidech et al.1 report on the patterns of AED use in ICH over 5 years across several academic medical centers in Chicago....

Emerging temporal trends in tissue plasminogen activator use: Results from the BASIC project
Conclusions: Dramatic increases in tPA use were apparent in this community without an academic medical center. Primary stroke center certification likely contributed to this rise. Results suggest that increases in tPA use were greater in higher severity patients compared to lower severity patients, and a gap between MAs and NHWs in tPA administration may be emerging.
