Establishing severity levels for patient-reported measures of functional communication, participation, and perceived cognitive function for adults with acquired cognitive and language disorders
ConclusionStandardized, stakeholder-informed severity levels that aid interpretation of PROM scores can help clinicians and researchers derive better clinical meaning from those scores, for example, by identifying important clinical windows of opportunity and assessing when symptoms have returned to a “normal” range.

Bolus Clearance Ratio Elevated in Patients With Neurogenic Dysphagia Compared With Healthy Adults: A Measure of Pharyngeal Efficiency
CONCLUSIONS: BCR was elevated in patients with neurogenic dysphagia in comparison with healthy norms and was significantly associated with increased aspiration severity (i.e., PAS). BCR was also correlated with pharyngeal timing and displacement parameters, with the strongest correlation with pharyngeal constriction-a measure of pharyngeal strength. The BCR offers clinicians a simple, quantitative measure of bolus residue and, therefore, pharyngeal efficiency and may be used to assess change in patients over time and with treatment.PMID:36378903 | DOI:10.1044/2022_AJSLP-22-00199

Cognitive Assessments for Patients With Neurological Conditions: A Preliminary Survey of Speech-Language Pathology Practice Patterns
Conclusions This study shows consistent cognitive assessment practices by SLPs across various neurological conditions rather than unique protocols relevant to the patterns typical across disorders. However, the amount of clinical evaluations supported by informal observation and/or the completion of select subtests of standardized assessment tools is considerable. This preliminary information conflicts with principles of rigorous assessment and increases the risk of erroneous findings when identifying cognitive impairments. Articulatory Correlates of Stress Pattern Disturbances in Talkers With Dysarthria
Conclusions In general, significant stress effects were observed in talkers with dysarthria. However, stress-specific between-group differences in articulatory performance, particularly displacement, may explain the perceptual impression of disturbed stress patterns. Abstract Dysphagia is common but may be underreported. Specific symptoms, rather than their perceived location, should guide the initial evaluation and imaging. Obstructive symptoms that seem to originate in the throat or neck may actually be caused by distal esophageal lesions. Corticospinal Tract Integrity and Long-Term Hand Function Prognosis in Patients With Stroke
Conclusions: The present study showed that CST integrity (at 6 months after onset) in patients with chronic stroke was related to functional hand status.
