Epidemiology of neurological disorders in India: Review of background, prevalence and incidence of epilepsy, stroke, Parkinson's disease and tremors
M Gourie-DeviNeurology India 2014 62(6):588-598Growth and development of neuroepidemiology in India during the last four decades has been documented highlighting the historical milestones. The prevalence rates of the spectrum of neurological disorders from different regions of the country ranged from 967-4,070 with a mean of 2394 per 100000 population, providing a rough estimate of over 30 million people with neurological disorders (excluding neuroinfections and traumatic injuries). Prevalence and incidence rates of common disorders including epilepsy, stroke, Parkinson's disease and tremors determined through popul...

Identification of diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and stroke in mid‐ and older‐aged women: Comparing self‐report and administrative hospital data records
ConclusionSubstantial agreement was found for diabetes, indicating accuracy of ascertainment using self‐report or hospital data. Self‐report data appears to be less accurate for heart disease and stroke. Hypertension was underestimated in hospital data. These findings have implications for epidemiological studies relying on self‐report or administrative data. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2015; ●●: ●●–●●.

Current Opinion on the Role of Neurogenesis in the Therapeutic Strategies for Alzheimer Disease, Parkinson Disease, and Ischemic Stroke; Considering Neuronal Voiding Function.
Authors: Han MH, Lee EH, Koh SH Abstract Neurological diseases such as Alzheimer, Parkinson, and ischemic stroke have increased in occurrence and become important health issues throughout the world. There is currently no effective therapeutic strategy for addressing neurological deficits after the development of these major neurological disorders. In recent years, it has become accepted that adult neural stem cells located in the subventricular and subgranular zones have the ability to proliferate and differentiate in order to replace lost or damaged neural cells. There have been many limitations in the clinical ap...

Mental health and BIS/BAS dimensions in Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis patients and in stroke survivors
Publication date: 1 October 2018 Source:Personality and Individual Differences, Volume 132 Author(s): Włodzimierz Oniszczenko, Joanna Bitner-Szulc, Anna Szylberg, Ewelina Kuczko-Piekarska, Marzena Zaborowska, Sławomir Wawrzyniak Mental health dimensions were compared among 46 Parkinson's disease patients, 46 multiple sclerosis patients and 32 stroke survivors. In addition, the role of the behavioural activation system (BAS) and the behavioural inhibition system (BIS) as mediators between disorders and mental health was investigated. The sample consisted of 124 neurological patients: all Caucasian adults (73 females and ...

A Hallmark Clinical Study of Cord Blood Therapy in Adults with Ischemic Stroke.
Abstract The therapeutic application of human umbilical cord blood cells has been an area of great interest for at least the last 25 years. Currently, cord blood cells are approved for reconstitution of the bone marrow following myeloablation in both young and old patients with myeloid malignancies and other blood cancers. Translational studies investigating alternative uses of cord blood have also shown that these cells not only stimulate neurogenesis in the aged brain but are also potentially therapeutic in the treatment of adult neurodegenerative disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's di...

Pramipexole prevents ischemic cell death via mitochondrial pathways in ischemic stroke RESEARCH ARTICLE
ABSTRACT A dopamine D2 receptor agonist, pramipexole, has been found to elicit neuroprotection in patients with Parkinson’s disease and restless leg syndrome. Recent evidence has shown that pramipexole mediates its neuroprotection through mitochondria. Considering this, we examined the possible mitochondrial role of pramipexole in promoting neuroprotection following an ischemic stroke of rat. Male Wistar rats underwent transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) and then received pramipexole (0.25 mg and 1 mg/kg body weight) at 1, 6, 12 and 18 h post-occlusion. A panel of neurological tests and ...

Development and Preliminary Validation of a Pneumatic Focal Vibration System to the Mitigation of Post-Stroke Spasticity
This study will not only provide a potential tool to relieve post-stroke spasticity, but also contribute to improving the sensory and motor function of patients with other neurological diseases, e.g. spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson and dystonia, etc.

Post Stroke Safinamide Treatment Attenuates Neurological Damage by Modulating Autophagy and Apoptosis in Experimental Model of Stroke in Rats
AbstractExploring and repurposing a drug have become a lower risk alternative. Safinamide, approved for Parkinson ’s disease, has shown neuroprotection in various animal models of neurological disorders. The present study aimed to explore the potential of safinamide in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) in rats. Sprague–Dawley rats were used in middle cerebral artery occlusion model of stroke. The effectiv e dose of safinamide was selected based on the results of neurobehavioral parameters and reduction in infarct size assessed 24 h post-reperfusion. For sub-acute study, the treatment with effective dose was extended...

Analysis of psychiatric consultations in the department of neurology and stroke unit: diagnosis and therapy
CONCLUSIONS: Patients in the department of neurology and stroke unit underwent a psychiatric consultation most frequently. Optimizing the care of aneurological patient is related to close cooperation of a neurologist and a psychiatrist, as well as developing and updating common positions for the management of selected disease entities.PMID:34997738 | DOI:10.12740/PP/OnlineFirst/116320
