Blood Cholesterol and Outcome of Patients with Cancer under Regular Cardiological Surveillance
Curr Oncol. 2021 Feb 12;28(1):863-872. doi: 10.3390/curroncol28010085.ABSTRACTCardiovascular (CV) diseases and cancer share several similarities, including common risk factors. In the present investigation we assessed the relationship between cholesterol levels and mortality in a cardiooncological collective. In total, 551 patients receiving anticancer treatment were followed over a median of 41 (95% CI 40, 43) months and underwent regular cardiological surveillance. A total of 140 patients (25.4%) died during this period. Concomitant cardiac diseases were more common in patients who deceased (53 (37.9%) vs. 67 (16.3%), p ...

The Effect of Chronic Disease Management Program on the Risk of Complications in Patients With Hypertension in Korea
CONCLUSION: The results showed that participants of the chronic disease management program were less likely to have hypertension complications compared to non-participants. Enhancing the participation rate may be related to better outcomes and reducing medical expenses among patients with chronic diseases.PMID:35942556 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2022.37.e243

Treatment-related cardiotoxicity in survivors of childhood cancer
Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology 10, 697 (2013). doi:10.1038/nrclinonc.2013.195 Authors: Steven E. Lipshultz, Thomas R. Cochran, Vivian I. Franco & Tracie L. Miller Treatment advances and higher participation rates in clinical trials have rapidly increased the number of survivors of childhood cancer. However, chemotherapy and radiation treatments are cardiotoxic and can cause cardiomyopathy, conduction defects, myocardial infarction, hypertension, stroke, pulmonary oedema, dyspnoea and exercise intolerance later in life.

432p * patterns and efficacy of bevacizumab use across treatment lines in glioblastoma
Conclusions: Our results show bevacizumab treatment may be more efficient after a recurrence than when used in the beginning of treatment and are in line with reported registration trials data.Disclosure: All authors have declared no conflicts of interest.

Correlation between use of simvastatin and lovastatin and female lung cancer risk: a nationwide case-control study.
CONCLUSIONS: Simvastatin use at a DDD of more than 150 is correlated with an approximately 20% reduction in the risk of lung cancer in women. PMID: 25421876 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract A12: Cancer communication in African American churches
Conclusion: Cancer was a frequent topic for disease-focused messages in African-American churches. In addition, three of the five most frequent disease topics matched the leading causes of death in the African-American community. The match was not as close in regards to leading causes of cancer death. Breast and prostate cancer information was frequently found; however, despite the high rates of mortality associated with lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and leukemia/lymphoma, information on these cancers was present much less frequently. No pancreatic cancer messages were found. Disease related information was seen that inc...

Acute Response of Right Ventricular Function to Iloprost Inhalations in Patients with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Preliminary Evaluation
with Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Background and objective Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disorder characterized by abnormally elevated blood pressure of the pulmonary circulation. Without treatment, PAH progresses rapidly to right ventricular (RV) failure and even death. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) has been an accurate and reproducible tool to assessment of RV morphology and function, which are important factors in the prognosis of patients with PAH. The aim of this study is to investigate acute RV response to inhalation of aerosolized iloprost in patients with PAH using CMRI. Method From March 2012 to March 2014, 48 ...

Abstract SY02-03: Mediators of the effect of overweight and obesity on cardiovascular disease and cancer: Evidence from pooling of prospective studies
ConclusionControlling diabetes may reduce the harmful effect of obesity on cancer. Recent advances in causal inference and mediation analysis can be readily applied to estimate the direct and mediated effects of lifestyle and metabolic risk factors on cancer.Citation Format: Goodarz Danaei. Abstract SY02-04: Risk factors associated with cancer, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease in the multiethnic cohort: Comparisons across ethnic groups
Many chronic diseases common in the United States, such as cancer, type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease, share many lifestyle risk factors, such as tobacco use, obesity, diet, and lack of physical activity. These factors likely act upon disease through common pathways, such as inflammation and immune suppression. Examining the association of these risk factors with chronic conditions within a cohort could provide insights into their roles in the etiology of cancer and disease in general. The Multiethnic Cohort (MEC) is a prospective study that enrolled over 215,000 individuals in Hawaii and California from 1993 to 19...

Abstract 882: Obesity, comorbidity and endometrial cancer survival: the multiethnic cohort
We examined the association of pre-diagnostic BMI and obesity-related comorbidities with overall survival in African-American, Japanese, Native Hawaiian, Latino and white women in the Multiethnic Cohort. Methods: Women with complete risk factor data who developed endometrial cancer during follow up were included in the analysis (N = 998). BMI and obesity-related comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, heart attack and stroke) were self-reported at cohort entry and at subsequent follow-ups. Cox's models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) with time-varying exposures in relation to all...

Abstract 5267: Comorbidity and cause of death in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
Conclusions. Despite the advanced age at CLL diagnosis, the frequent presence of comorbidities, and the indolent nature of the disease, CLL progression is the ultimate cause of death in 51% of newly diagnosed CLL patients, with an additional 26% dying of causes potentially related to CLL, such as infections and second cancers. The influence of comorbidities and other clinical factors at diagnosis (e.g. smoking, Charlson Comorbidity Index) on survival and ultimate cause of death are being abstracted, and will be presented at the meeting.Citation Format: Paolo Strati, Kari Chaffe, Sara Achenbach, Timothy Call, Neil Kay, Jame...
