Late effects of childhood cancer recorded at a single outpatient clinic over the course of one year: implications for the follow-up care
Neoplasma. 2022 Jul 13:220531N584. doi: 10.4149/neo_2022_220531N584. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSystematic registration and analysis of detailed treatment data and data on late effects in survivors of childhood cancer are important both for building the evidence base for future assessment of current innovative therapies in pediatric oncology and for personalization of preventive care for survivors of childhood cancer. The paper provides a descriptive analysis of medical data (diagnosis, treatment, late effects, and health status) and selected patient-reported outcomes (mental health and psychosocial well-being) from a s...

Ambient fine particulate pollution hysteresis triggers wake-up stroke and rapidly triggers non-wake-up stroke: a case-crossover study
This study aimed to explore the relationship between WUS and non-WUS and atmospheric pollutants. A total of 1432 patients (331 WUS patients and 1101 non-WUS patients) were admitted to a tertiary hospital from 2016 to 2019. A time-stratified case-crossover design and a conditional logistic regression model to study the associations of change in pollutant concentration with WUS and non-WUS events were constructed. Data analysis revealed that WUS-related risks increased 48 to 72 h after the increase in the PM2.5 concentration (each 10 μg/m3 increase, lag 0-72 h) [threshold OR (95% CI):18 μg/m3 1.03 (0.94-1.11), 35 μg/m3 1....

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis diagnosed by bone marrow trephine biopsy in living post-COVID-19 patients: case report and mini-review
AbstractHemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) constitutes a life-threatening inflammatory syndrome. Postmortem histological findings of bone marrow (BM) from COVID-19 patients showed histiocytosis and hemophagocytosis and supported the hypothesis that secondary HLH (sHLH) may be triggered by SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, there are a limited number of sHLH cases in which trephine has been performed in living post-COVID-19 patients. Here we present a recent case and a mini-review of sHLH diagnosed by trephine biopsy in living patients after COVID-19. An 81-year-old man with a past medical history of hypertension, diabete...

266 A drowsy patient: beyond the familiar territory
A 72-year-old man was brought to the hospital after he was found unresponsive at home by his wife who reported that he has been sleepy in the last few days. He has a background of hypertension, myocardial infarct, and osteoarthritis. His medications include anti-hypertensive and morphine sulphate. On examination, he was drowsy with GCS fluctuating between 9–11 but maintaining his airways. He was moving all four limbs; pupils were small and unequal but reactive to light. Planter reflexes were downgoing. Opioid toxicity was suspected and treated with naloxone without any response. The CT head scan showed no acute patho...

New Data From Two Large Studies Reinforce Effectiveness of Dual Pathway Inhibition (DPI) with XARELTO ® (rivaroxaban) Plus Aspirin in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and/or Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)
RARITAN, N.J., May 23, 2022 – Findings from the XARELTO® (rivaroxaban) Phase 3 COMPASS Long-Term Open Label Extension (LTOLE) study and the XARELTO® in Combination with Acetylsalicylic Acid (XATOA) registry have been published in the European Society of Cardiology’s (ESC) European Heart Journal, Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy. Additionally, the XATOA registry was presented at the American Congress of Cardiology’s 71st Annual Scientific Session (ACC.22). These studies provide further evidence supporting the role of dual pathway inhibition (DPI) with the XARELTO® vascular dose (2.5 mg twice daily plus aspirin 100 mg...

Association of Angiotensin II Type 1 Receptor (AT1R) Gene Polymorphism with Angiotensin II Serum Levels in Patients with Essential Hypertension
This study aimed to determine genotype and allele frequencies of A1166C polymorphism of AT1R gene in Indian patients with EH and correlated with serum levels of Angiotensin II. A total of 200 patients with EH and 200 age- and gender-matched control individuals were included in this study from the General Medicine Department Outpatient at Narayana Medical College and Hospital, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India. Patients with systolic blood pressure (SBP)  ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90 mmHg were considered as hypertensive. The findings of this study revealed significantly increased risk of ...

Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy and Mortality at Delivery Hospitalization - United States, 2017-2019
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2022 Apr 29;71(17):585-591. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7117a1.ABSTRACTHypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDPs), defined as prepregnancy (chronic) or pregnancy-associated hypertension, are common pregnancy complications in the United States.* HDPs are strongly associated with severe maternal complications, such as heart attack and stroke (1), and are a leading cause of pregnancy-related death in the United States.† CDC analyzed nationally representative data from the National Inpatient Sample to calculate the annual prevalence of HDP among delivery hospitalizations and by maternal characteristics, a...
