Self-perceived psychological stress and risk of all-cause mortality after stroke: the Mashhad Stroke Incidence Study (MSIS) (P4.306)
Conclusions:High self-perceived pre-stroke stress was associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality after stroke. Further prospective studies are required to evaluate the role of psychological stress as a predictor of stroke outcome.Disclosure: Dr. Saber has nothing to disclose. Modafinil for the Improvement of Patient Outcomes Following Traumatic Brain Injury
Conclusion. Modafinil is a central nervous system stimulant with well-established effectiveness in the treatment of narcolepsy and shift-work sleep disorder. There is conflicting evidence about the benefits of modafinil in the treatment of fatigue and EDS secondary to TBI. One randomized, controlled study states that modafinil does not significantly improve patient wakefulness, while another concludes that modafinil corrects EDS but not fatigue. An observational study provides evidence that modafinil increases alertness in fatigued patients with past medical history of brainstem diencephalic stroke or multiple sclerosis. ...

Quality of Life Within Three Months After Stroke: A Study in the City of Arak, Iran.
CONCLUSION: It was concluded that being older, having higher NIHSS score, suffering from hypertension, right side lesion and previous stroke could be significantly correlated with poor patients' QoL. Therefore, effective interventions focusing on older individuals especially those with more severe impairments were assumed to help in improving post-stroke QoL in patients; regardless of their gender, level of education, and social activities. Rate and Determinants of Recurrence at 1 Year and 5 Years After Stroke in a Low-Income Population in Rural China
Recurrent stroke is becoming an increasingly important public health issue owing to the increased risk of disability and death. However, population-based studies investigating the rate of recurrent stroke in China are rare. We explored the rate and determinants of recurrent stroke within 1 and 5 years after the initial stroke in a rural population in China. Data for stroke events were obtained from the Tianjin Brain Study, conducted between 1992 and 2016. The age-standardized rates of recurrent stroke within the first year and the first 5 years after the initial stroke were calculated for this period. Determinants of recur...

Stroke Characteristics and Outcomes of Adult Patients in Northwest Ethiopia
Stroke is becoming one of the leading causes of adult disability and death in sub-Saharan African countries. The aim of the present study is to provide an up-to-date account of the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients with stroke admitted to the University of Gondar College of Medicine and Health Science Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (CMHS). A hospital based retrospective study design was used to analyze the medical records of all patients with stroke admitted to CMHS from June 20th 2012 and April 30th 2018. Genetically predicted higher educational attainment decreases the risk of stroke: a multivariable Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSIONS: We found that genetically predicated higher EA decreased the risks of total stroke, ischemic stroke, and cardioembolic stroke, independent of smoking, alcohol consumption, BMI, intelligence, and hypertension.PMID:35710362 | DOI:10.1186/s12872-022-02713-7

Assessment of Stroke Risk Factors in Southern Arizona (P02.054)
CONCLUSIONS: Despite a higher incidence of stroke, Hispanic concern regarding stroke risk factors is much lower than non-Hispanics. This suggests that knowledge linking risk factors for stroke and incident stroke may be lacking in Hispanic communities. Lessened concern regarding stroke risk factors may contribute to an increase incidence in stroke and to a worse outcome in this population. Hispanics increased interest in health promotion programs may afford one approach to addressing this problem. This data suggest that despite historically worse stroke outcomes, preventative efforts may be beneficial in raising stroke ris...

Body Mass Index and Stroke Subtype in a Young Adult Stroke Population (I12-5D)
CONCLUSIONS: In our group of young adult stroke patients, we found the highest BMI in the group with intracranial atherosclerosis. Although this group represented a small number of patients, this young adult population is at increased risk for future strokes. It is important to educate them on lifestyle modifications such as weight loss and exercise in addition to the treatment of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia.Disclosure: Dr. Youn has nothing to disclose. Gender differences in feelings and knowledge about stroke
ConclusionStroke knowledge is poor among men and women. Higher level of education is a predictor of stroke knowledge among both genders. Gender‐specific differences in stroke risk factors and feelings about stroke in different sub‐populations should be taken into account to improve prevention of stroke through education programmes. Relevance to clinical practiceHealth education on stroke prevention should be tailored to population groups differing in level of education. Health promotion recommendations should be provided by nurses with regard to beliefs of both men and women regarding prevention of stroke.

Public health campaigns and their effect on stroke knowledge in a high-risk urban population: A five-year study.
Conclusion Stroke literacy has remained stable in this selected high-risk population despite large investments in public campaigns over recent years. However, the baseline remains high over the study period. Evaluation of previous campaigns and development of targeted advertisements using more commonly used media sources offer opportunities to enhance education.
