Analysis of 565 thrombectomies for anterior circulation stroke: A Brazilian registry
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the efficacy and safety of mechanical thrombectomy for treatment of patients with AIS of the anterior circulation in real-life conditions under limited facilities and resources. The results of the present study were relatively similar to those of large trials and population registers of developed countries.PMID:34139892 | DOI:10.1177/15910199211026995

Association of the CHGA gene polymorphism in patients with hemorrhagic stroke and/or aneurysm
Conclusion: The Glu264Asp CHGA polymorphism does not seem to contribute to the genesis of the CHGA protein expression in this patients group, but to understand whether or not there is a possible association of the pathology in question and whether the mutation will contribute in the gene therapy and thus to improve patients ’ quality of life.RESUMEN Introducci ón: Enfermedades cerebrovasculares han sido vinculadas a diversos genes. La cromogranina A (CgA) es utilizada como un marcador en enfermedades cardiovasculares. Por consiguiente, evaluar el polimorfismo y verificar la asociación con esa patología es muy importan...

Alarming lack of knowledge about antithrombotic therapy among patients with atrial fibrillation
Conclusions: Our study showed an alarming knowledge gap in patients with atrial fibrillation. Difficulty in adherence to treatment resulting from the failure of this communication is possibly one of the factors responsible for the high incidence and recurrence of stroke, and should not go unnoticed.RESUMO Campanhas populacionais para melhorar o conhecimento sobre os sinais e sintomas do acidente vascular encef álico e a importância do tempo para o tratamento têm sido realizadas no nosso país, visando a melhoria da linha do atendimento. Objetivo: Paralelamente a estas relevantes ações, objetivamos avaliar o conhecimen...

Do baseline characteristics and treatments account for geographical disparities in the outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation? The prospective GARFIELD-AF registry
Conclusion The variability in outcomes across countries for patients with newly diagnosed AF is not accounted for by baseline characteristics and antithrombotic treatments. Residual mortality rates were correlated with Healthcare Access and Quality indices. The findings suggest the management of patients with AF needs to not only address guideline indicated and sustained anticoagulation, but also the treatment of comorbidities and lifestyle factors. Trial registration number NCT01090362.

Decompressive Craniectomy for Traumatic Brain Injury: Postoperative Cerebral Hemodynamic Evaluation
Conclusion: There is a wide heterogeneity of postoperative cerebral hemodynamic findings among TBI patients who underwent DC, including hemodynamic heterogeneity between their cerebral hemispheres. DC was proved to be effective for the treatment of cerebral oligoemia. Our data support the concept of heterogeneous nature of the pathophysiology of the TBI and suggest that DC as the sole treatment modality is insufficient. Introduction Decompressive craniectomy (DC) may effectively decrease intracranial pressure (ICP) and increase cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients with refracto...

What Causes Microcephaly?
Discussion Microcephaly is usually defined as an occipitofrontal head circumference (OFC) more than 2 standard deviations (SD) below the mean for sex, age and ethnicity. Severe microcephaly is used for OFC < 3 standard deviations. Rates of microcephaly range from 0.5-12 patients/10,000 live births. The OFC should be measured at every well child visit and at other opportunities and plotted on standard growth charts. The OFC is measured using a nonelastic tape measure around the largest part of the head with the tape measure held above the eyebrows and ears. It is a highly reproducible measurement. There are several diff...

A Polymorphism in Toll-like Receptor 2 Gene Is Associated with Occurrence of Bacterial Infections in Sickle Cell Disease Patients
Discussion: In SCD pts, TLR-2 rs4696480 TA genotype might be protective against bacterial infections, whereas TT genotype might increase risk of such infections. Previous reports demonstrated higher secretion of inflammatory factors in cells from AA individuals, lower occurrence and severity of immune diseases in T carriers. TA genotype might stand between deleterious effects of over inflammatory response (AA genotype) and under response (TT genotype) to infectious agents.DisclosuresNo relevant conflicts of interest to declare.
