Cancer: but what if it were a disease caused by an association between microorganisms?
This article makes an analogy and compares the biological behavior of bacteria, viruses and neoplasms, showing several common points in their mechanisms of growth and survival, questioning cancer as a distinct living organism and introducing the hypothesis of synergy between viruses and bacteria in the development of neoplasms. Up to now, there are no experimental studies that effectively investigate the association between more than one microorganism as an etiologic factor of cancer.RESUMO Apesar dos avan ços no conhecimento do comportamento das neoplasias, o entendimento exato dos processos biológicos que e...

Thrombomodulin and interleukin 6 as potential biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction and inflammation after renal transplant
ABSTRACT Introduction: Endothelial dysfunction may contribute to hypercoagulable and inflammation states presents in renal transplant, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its causes. These disorders can be evaluated by markers, such as thrombomodulin (TM), von Willebrand factor (vWF) and interleukin 6 (IL-6). Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess TM, vWF and IL-6 in renal transplant recipients (RTR) and associate their plasma levels with primary cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and allograft function. Methods: 160 RTR were grouped according to the primary cause of CKD (G1: glomerulopathy; G2: hypertensive nep...

Description of clinical aspects and microscopy of the hair shaft of a carrier of familial monilethrix
We describe a family with this disease, focusing on its clinical aspects and microscopic hair characteristics. The patient was a 10-year-old female with history of hypotrichosis. In addition to diffuse alopecia, there was brittle hair, with ruptures in the hair shaft at different levels. The hair had a nodular appearance at naked eye. Other family members had the same symptoms, what indicates an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. Microscopic analysis revealed capillary fibers with areas of elliptical nodular appearance interspersed with regions of dystrophic constriction.RESUMO A monil étrix é uma con...

D2-40/podoplanin expression in chronic villitis of the placenta
ABSTRACT D2-40/podoplanin (D2-40/PDPN) is a multifunctional protein that can be expressed in lymphatic endothelium and immune cells. D2-40/ PDPN expression in chronic villitis (CV) has not been studied. In 22 cases of CV, we analyzed both D2-40/PDPN expression as well as its coexpression with immune cells markers, and the relationship with stromal cells. In the non-inflamed villi, the D2-40/PDPN positive plexiform pattern has a lymphatic-like conductive network. In the inflamed villi, the D2-40/PDPN expression, predominantly restricted to stromal cells forming a cellular network, is likely related to a phase of the inflamm...
