Evaluation of the influence of pre-analytical factors on total testosterone levels in healthy young men
ABSTRACT Introduction: Testosterone is the main hormone that regulates male reproductive functions, directly participating in spermatogenesis and increasing sexual activity. The blood measurement of this hormone is essential for the diagnosis of neuroendocrine disorders, such as hypogonadism. However, there is lack of standardization regarding patient preparation for the hormone collection in clinical laboratories. Objective: Evaluate the effect of pre-analytical variables, including fasting, circadian and seasonal variation on testosterone levels in healthy young males. Material and methods: Forty-two volunteers were sele...

Hereditary hemochromatosis associated with the development of liver cirrhosis
ABSTRACT Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is an autosomal recessive disease, most often associated with mutations in the HFE gene, which result in continuous absorption of iron, causing its overload. Liver tissue is the main site of iron deposition; thus, high levels of iron, when interacting with oxygen, induce the formation of free radicals that will act on proteins, lipids, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which may trigger deleterious effects at cellular and tissue levels. In order to elucidate the development and progression of liver cirrhosis due to iron overload, the purpose of this study is to describe the pathophys...

Clinical hypotheses of salivary duct cyst and mucocele were proposed, and the patient underwent excisional biopsy. Microscopically, a well-circumscribed and encapsulated lymphoid aggregate fragment was observed, characterized by layers of well-differentiated small lymphocytes and collections of reactive lymphoblasts. These findings, associated with immunohistochemistry, established the diagnosis of follicular lymphoid hyperplasia. Currently, the patient is well, under follow-up after six months.RESU...

Clinical-pathological aspects of oral lymphoepithelial cyst: case report
ABSTRACT Oral lymphoepithelial cyst (OLEC) is an uncommon lesion whose pathogenesis remains poorly understood. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of OLEC. Female patient, white, 62 years old, presented asymptomatic nodular swelling of soft consistency in the lateral border of the tongue. Under the clinical hypothesis of lymphoid tissue hyperplasia, an excisional biopsy was performed. Histopathological examination revealed a pathological epithelial-lined cavity and a cystic connective tissue capsule containing lymphoid tissue. The diagnosis of OLEC was established and the patient showed no signs of recurrence aft...

Eosinophilic granuloma: an unusual finding in adults
ABSTRACT A 45-year-old man presents with occipital headache for about one month, resistant to analgesic therapy, and palpable nodule at the pain site. At initial evaluation, the nodule was 1.5 cm in diameter without apparent skin alteration. Ultrasonography revealed a well-defined osteolytic lesion and doubtful communication with the dura mater. The study was complemented with computed tomography and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance, both identifying lytic lesion with soft tissue component and contrast enhancement, without diffusion restriction, guiding the diagnostic hypothesis of eosinophilic granuloma. Surgical trea...

Statistical association of rs2243250 polymorphism of IL4 gene and hemorrhagic stroke in Brazilian population
This study analyzed if the variation between TT genotype and the other genotypes (CT and CC), in -589 (rs2243250) polymorphism of IL4 gene, has association with the prognosis of hemorrhagic stroke (HS) and with clinical aspects which are risk factors for cerebrovascular diseases. The result of this study shows that there is no statistical association of the IL4 polymorphism with either prognosis or clinical aspects in HS patients.RESUMEN La interleucina-4 (IL-4) tiene gran importancia en los procesos inflamatorios en casos de accidente cerebrovascular (ACV), puesto que hace que las microgl ías sean polarizadas hacia...

Interference of blood storage containing K2EDTA and K3EDTA anticoagulants in the automated analysis of the hemogram
