Surgical-orthodontic therapy of compound odontoma in the anterior maxilla
The objective of this case is to report the treatment of a patient with complex odontoma in childhood in the anterior maxilla. A nine-year-old patient sought dental care due to non-eruption of an anterior permanent tooth. After clinical examination and radiographic analysis, the diagnostic hypothesis of odontoma was confirmed. Surgical removal of the lesion and use of orthodontic appliances were indicated. After the therapeutic protocol, the case was completely resolved. Due to the absence of symptoms, many cases of odontomas are neglected. However, it is evident that the sooner diagnosed, the better the prognosis of the p...

Brunner’s gland cyst: rare differential diagnosis of dyspeptic symptoms
abstract A 60-year-old woman was under investigation of dyspeptic symptoms. The upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a cystic subepithelial lesion in the second portion of the duodenum, measuring 8 mm in its longest diameter. The biopsy showed dilated Brunner ’ s gland lobular ducts with scattered stromal elements, what characterized a Brunner ’ s gland cyst. Brunner ’ s gland cyst should be included in the differential diagnosis of gastrointestinal bleeding, dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), malabsorption syndrome, anemia, among others. The correct nomenclature is important to facilit...

ABSTRACT Cementoblastoma is a benign, slow-growing, and unlimited mesenchymal dental tumor. Due to its rarity, we aimed to report the case of a 24-year-old female patient who presented pain complaints and increased volume in the left mandibular region. Imaging tests showed a hyperdense lesion with hypodense halo, associated with the roots of elements 35, 36, and 37. Histopathology revealed diagnosis of cementoblastoma. The proposed treatment consisted of the enucleation of the tumor mass together with the exodontia of the teeth involved and osteotomy of the bone remnant. The patient has been under follow-up for one year wi...

Basal cell carcinoma of the areola: a rare case report
ABSTRACT Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignant cutaneous neoplasm. It is preferentially located in areas exposed to solar radiation, since the cumulative effect of ultraviolet radiation on susceptible individuals seems to be the major triggering factor. Among the places considered unusual are breasts and glutes. According to a survey conducted in 2016, there are only 55 cases of BCC in the nipple-areola complex described in the literature. In the present report, we have a patient with areolar BCC and discuss the importance of a thorough dermatological examination.RESUMEN El carcinoma basocelular (CBC) es ...

Celiac disease as differential diagnosis of normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism
ABSTRACT There is no recommendation to investigate celiac disease (CD) in patients with elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) and normal blood calcium if they are asymptomatic, especially if they do not have hypovitaminosis D. We aimed to evaluate the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulation test in patients with repeatedly elevated TSH (up to 10 mIU/l) and normal FT4, but without apparent thyroid disease. Women with TSH> 4.5 and ≤ 10 mIU/l (in two measurements) and normal FT4 were selected. Women with a known non-thyroid cause of TSH elevation, those treated with anti-thyroid drugs, amiodarone, lithium, and those with a history of thyroidectomy, neck radiotherapy and 131I treatment were excluded. Methods: We retrospectively assessed data from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples sent to Senne Liquor Diagn óstico from 2001 to 2017. Cytological, biochemical, and immunological data were compared between cases with and without oligoclonal bands (OCBs). Comparisons between samples with OCBs (OCB+) and without them (OCB-) were carried out, and the...

Martin's, Friedewald's and Cordova's formulas compared to LDL-C directly measured in Southern Brazil
Conclusion: Martin ’ s equation is not accurate for estimating LDL-C in our sample, unless TG is between 300 and 400 mg/dl. We recommend using the Cordova& Cordova formula as an alternative to determine LDL-C when its direct measurement is not available, and not applying the Martin ’ s Formula indiscriminately to other populations before it is properly evaluated and compared with other available equations.RESUMEN Introducci ón: Recientemente, se ha recomendado la flexibilización del ayuno para la determinación del perfil lipídico. Cuando los triglicéridos (TG) estén...

Oral glucose tolerance test: unnecessary requests and suitable conditions for the test
ABSTRACT Introduction: The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is an important test for diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM) that needs criteria to be requested and analytical performance evaluation. Objectives: Determine the prevalence of unnecessary OGTT requests and analyze patients ’ suitability criteria for glucose load. Method: Cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study conducted with 554 patients who had OGTT requested from January to April 2018. Data from laboratory tests were collected through Complab Advanced version 6.9.6 system, organized into a Microsoft ® Excel table and analyzed using Epi Info...
