Coronavirus in a patient with hepatitis C: case report
ABSTRACT In February 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) named the infection with the new coronavirus, which appeared in December 2019 in China, as Covid-19, and defined it as a worldwide pandemic. There is not much evidence about the relationship between liver disease and Covid-19. Laboratory tests have played a fundamental role in confirming Covid-19, what is usually done by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) sample. The present study reports the laboratory aspects of a patient with type C hepatitis diagnosed with Covid-19 with an unfavorable evolution, devoting special attention to laboratory tests that were almo...

Coronavirus in pediatrics: report of two cases and review of the literature
ABSTRACT COVID-19 was identified on December 31, 2019 in China, and has since been the subject of several studies. In the area of pediatrics, the infection appears to affect this population group more mildly when compared to adults. The present work shows the report of two cases of in patients in the pediatric age group, both aged 2 years, presenting their laboratory, clinical and radiological aspects. In this population, the virus ’ s transmissibility seems to be related to symptom presentation, as the less symptomatic the patient presents the lower is transmissibility. The final interest of the presented cases is t...

False-negative result in molecular diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 in samples with amplification inhibitors
ABSTRACT Introduction: Although reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) is the gold standard method for detecting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), some factors, such as the presence of amplification inhibitors, lead to false-negative results. Objective: Here we describe the differences between rRT-PCR results for SARS-CoV-2 infection in normal and diluted samples, simulating the need for dilution due to the presence of amplification inhibitors. Material and method: Viral ribonucleic acid (RNA) from samples of nasopharyngeal swabs from 20 patients previously detected as “...

Coronavirus and the puerperium: a case report
ABSTRACT COVID-19 started in China on December 31, 2019 and has since been the subject of several studies in medical field. There is not much evidence about the pregnancy and puerperium with the susceptibility of coronavirus infection (COVID-19). The present work reports the laboratory and radiological aspects of a puerperium patient. A positive test for severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) generally confirms the diagnosis of COVID-19, although false-positive and false-negative tests are possible. The test considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) is from in ...

The objective of this case is to report the treatment of a patient with complex odontoma in childhood in the anterior maxilla. A nine-year-old patient sought dental care due to non-eruption of an anterior permanent tooth. After clinical examination and radiographic analysis, the diagnostic hypothesis of odontoma was confirmed. Surgical removal of the lesion and use of orthodontic appliances were indicated. After the therapeutic protocol, the case was completely resolved. Due to the absence of symptoms, many cases of odontomas are neglected. El estrógeno y la progesterona son los principales reguladores del tejido endometrial, y la expresión de receptores de esas hormon as en el tejido ectópico parece tener conexión con la fi siopatolog ía de la enfermedad. El Ki-67 es un marcador de ...

Multi-categorical classification using deep learning applied to the diagnosis of gastric cancer
Conclusion: The results show the potential application of convolutional neural networks for digitized slides of gastric cancer, in accordance with international literature findings.RESUMEN Introducci ón: Los patólogos enfrentan actualmente un aumento sustancial de su trabajo diagnóstico en diferentes tipos de cáncer. Eso ocurre debido al incremento de la incidencia y de la detección de neoplasias, además de la subespecialización diagnóstica y del advenimiento de la medicina personalizad a. Hay numerosos tratamientos disponibles para diferentes tipos de cáncer, ...

Association of the CHGA gene polymorphism in patients with hemorrhagic stroke and/or aneurysm
Conclusion: The Glu264Asp CHGA polymorphism does not seem to contribute to the genesis of the CHGA protein expression in this patients group, but to understand whether or not there is a possible association of the pathology in question and whether the mutation will contribute in the gene therapy and thus to improve patients ’ quality of life.RESUMEN Introducci ón: Enfermedades cerebrovasculares han sido vinculadas a diversos genes. La cromogranina A (CgA) es utilizada como un marcador en enfermedades cardiovasculares. Por consiguiente, evaluar el polimorfismo y verificar la asociación con esa patolog&ia...

Comparison of micronuclei frequency between smokers and non-smokers: a systematic review
Discussion and conclusion: Individuals who use tobacco present genotoxic and cytotoxic damages that interfere in the mitosis process, which leads to MN formation. The hypothesis of smoking as the cause of this genetic alteration is corroborated by the authors when comparing the data obtained in their studies between risk groups and control groups.RESUMEN Introducci ón: El cáncer es el resultado de la acumulación de diversas modificaciones en el material genético, por lo tanto, es posible realizar su detección citogenética usando biomarcadores. Micronúcleos (MN) se han aborda...
