Palisaded encapsulated neuroma clinically mimicking a mucocele: report of a case
We report the case of a 21-year-old female patient with the chief complaint of a small tumor on the lower left lip. Intraoral examination revealed a two-month evolution nodular lesion on the left labial mucosa, of resilient consistency and asymptomatic. A history of prior trauma was reported by the patient. A provisional diagnosis of mucocele was established, and an excisional biopsy was performed. The diagnosis was palisaded encapsulated neuroma (PEN). As PEN is considered underdiagnosed by many authors, a discussion on the morphologic diagnostic criteria of this lesion will be provided.RESUMO Relatamos o caso de uma paci...

D2-40/podoplanin expression in chronic villitis of the placenta
ABSTRACT D2-40/podoplanin (D2-40/PDPN) is a multifunctional protein that can be expressed in lymphatic endothelium and immune cells. D2-40/ PDPN expression in chronic villitis (CV) has not been studied. In 22 cases of CV, we analyzed both D2-40/PDPN expression as well as its coexpression with immune cells markers, and the relationship with stromal cells. In the non-inflamed villi, the D2-40/PDPN positive plexiform pattern has a lymphatic-like conductive network. In the inflamed villi, the D2-40/PDPN expression, predominantly restricted to stromal cells forming a cellular network, is likely related to a phase of the inflamm...

Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of microorganisms in a university hospital from Vitória (ES), Brazil
ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) occur during the hospital stay as a result of underlying morbidity, invasive procedures, acute pathology or medical treatment. They lead prolonged stay and, consequently, to an increase in financial charges. The main tool to control these infections is the use of antimicrobials. However, the increase in resistance and the low frequency of discovery of new drugs justify the research that evaluates the resistance profile of microorganisms to antimicrobials. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of HAIs at a philanthropic r...

He was a male patient with cholestatic jaundice, facial dysmorphia and congenital heart disease who presented a brief septicemia. He underwent liver biopsy and analyses for inborn errors of metabolism that respectively showed ductopenia and increased levels of ChT. Activity of carbapenems and tigecycline against ESBL-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp.
ABSTRACT The indiscriminate use of carbapenems in the fight against multidrug resistant Gram-negative bacteria leads to the emergence of resistance to these antimicrobial agents. We examine the in vitro activity of carbapenems and tigecycline against ESBL-producing E. coli and Klebsiella spp. isolated in a single hospital at two different periods eight years apart. Overall resistance to carbapenems ranged from 18.7% in 2007 to 19.1% in 2015/2016. We found no isolates resistant to tigecycline, but two intermediary profiles in the 2015/2016 period. The prevalence of malignant transformation of diffuse astrocytoma to anaplastic astrocytoma and GBM varies from 40% to 75% of cases in different series. Distinct genetic abnormalities are related to neoplastic progression, and the cells prone to glial neoplasm development include progenitor cells, stem cells, or differentiated cells. Pancreatic adenosquamous carcinoma, a rare entity: report of four cases
ABSTRACT Adenosquamous carcinoma of the pancreas (ASCP) is a rare variant of the pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Between 2004 and 2016, four cases of ASCP were resected at our institution; clinicopathological data were collected. All of our patients were males, aged 55-80 years. Three cases were cephalic tumors; and one, pancreatic tail tumor, measuring between 2.3 and 5.5 cm. All had neurovascular invasion and lymphatic metastasis. Two had retroperitoneal positive margins. The overall survival (OS) after surgery was three weeks-42 months. Prognosis of ASCP is dark and OS appears to be more closely related to surg...

Cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions grades 1 and 2: value of an alternative morphological classification and of p16 immunohistochemistry in the prediction of clinical outcome
Conclusion: The use of an alternative morphological classification is promising; in the context of the use of immunohistochemical antibodies as biomarkers, p16 showed good sensitivity and negative predictive value in the determination of cases in which the outcome was unfavorable.RESUMO Introdu ção: A reproducibilidade diagnóstica e a determinação de fatores prognósticos em neoplasias intraepiteliais cervicais graus 1 e 2 ainda são problemas relevantes na prática diária da histopatologia ginecológica.
