Age-Associated Resilience Against Ischemic Injury in Mice Exposed to Transient Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion
AbstractIschemic stroke is the leading cause of death and disability. Although stroke mainly affects aged individuals, animal research is mostly one on young rodents. Here, we examined the development of ischemic injury in young (9 –12-week-old) and adult (72-week-old) C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice exposed to 30 min of intraluminal middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo). Post-ischemic reperfusion did not differ between young and adult mice. Ischemic injury assessed by infarct area and blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity assessed by IgG extravasation analysis was smaller in adult compared with young mice. Microvascular viabili...

A higher probability of subsequent stroke and ischemic heart disease in migraine patients: a longitudinal follow-up study in Korea
ConclusionsOur longitudinal follow-up study demonstrated a significant association between the presence of migraine and the development of stroke and ischemic heart disease in Korea, even after adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors.

Development and Validation of a Postprocedural Model to Predict Outcome After Endovascular Treatment for Ischemic Stroke
This prognostic study investigates the effectiveness of a prognostic tool to predict the functional outcome of individual patients after endovascular treatment for ischemic stroke.

Thematic Analysis of Psychosocial Stressors and Adaptive Coping Strategies Among Informal Caregivers of Patients Surviving ICU Admission for Coma
ConclusionsIn response to substantial stressors, family caregivers of patients with SABI attempted to enact various psychological and behavioral coping strategies. They described avoidance and distraction as less helpful than other coping strategies but had difficulty engaging in alternative strategies because of their emotional distress. These findings can directly inform the development of additional resources to mitigate the long-term impact of acute psychological distress among this caregiver population.

Use of Tirofiban to Prevent Ischemic Events in Patients with CYP2C19 Loss-of-Function Alleles during Flow Diversion of Intracranial Aneurysm: A Multicenter Cohort Study
This study supports CYP2C19 genotyping before flow diversion because LOF alleles increase the risk of ischemic events. Prophylactic use of tirofiban may help reduce ischemic events in LOF allele carriers.

The onset of cerebral infarction may be affected by differences in atmospheric pressure distribution patterns
ConclusionsCerebral embolism and cerebral thrombosis exhibited significant differences in APDPs on the day of onset. Dehydration particularly in the other high-pressure type or in the anticyclone belt type should be prevented. Further investigation should focus on the other meteorological factors.

Cathepsin B knockout confers significant brain protection in the mouse model of stroke
CONCLUSION: Brain ischemia leads to a cascade of events leading to inactivation of NSF, disruption of the endolysosomal cycle, endolysosomal structural buildup and damage, and the release of CTSB, eventually resulting in brain ischemia reperfusion injury. CTSB KO in mice protected the brain from ischemia-reperfusion injury.PMID:37506756 | DOI:10.1016/j.expneurol.2023.114499

Montelukast Sodium Protects against Focal Cerebral Ischemic Injury by Regulating Inflammatory Reaction via Promoting Microglia Polarization
CONCLUSION: Montelukast sodium can protect against focal cerebral ischemic injury by regulating inflammatory reaction via promoting microglia polarization.PMID:37499731 | DOI:10.1016/j.brainres.2023.148498

Calculated plasma volume status is associated with poor outcomes in acute ischemic stroke treated with endovascular treatment
ConclusionOur study found that an elevated PVS value was associated with poor outcomes after EVT. Further prospective cohorts were warranted to evaluate the utility of PVS in AIS treated with EVT.

A case of pure apraxia of speech after left hemisphere stroke: behavioral findings and neural correlates
DiscussionThis pure case of severe AOS without aphasia affords a unique window into the behavioral and neural mechanisms of this motor speech disorder. The current findings support previous observations that AOS and aphasia are dissociable and confirm a role for the precentral gyrus of the insula and BA44, as well as underlying white matter in supporting the coordination of complex articulatory movements. Additionally, other regions including the precentral gyrus, Broca’s area, and Area 55b are discussed regarding their potential role in successful speech production.

The incidence of medium vessel occlusions: a population-based study
ConclusionAs the only stroke center in Olmsted County, we have been able to estimate the incidence of ischemic stroke due to MeVO. While the incidence of MeVOs is less than both large and small vessel occlusions, they still represent a significant proportion of strokes with significant morbidity and mortality that would benefit from further studies in both acute intervention and prevention.

Automated acute ischemic stroke lesion delineation based on apparent diffusion coefficient thresholds
ConclusionThe performance of ADC thresholds for delineating acute stroke lesions varies substantially between patients. It is influenced by factors such as lesion size as well as lesion and parenchymal ADC values. Considering the inherent noisiness of ADC maps, ADC threshold-based automated delineation of very small lesions is not reliable.
