Ambient particulate matter burden of disease in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
CONCLUSION: Ambient particulate matter is the fifth health risk factor in Saudi Arabia, contributing 9% of total mortality. Over the past 27 years, estimated exposure levels of PM2.5 in Saudi Arabia have been above WHO's air quality guidelines. Although since 2011 mortality and DALY rates attributable to PM2.5 have decreased, air pollution concentrations continue to increase. National and local authorities in Saudi Arabia should consider policies to reduce industrial and traffic-related air pollution in combination with the strengthening of current investments and improvements in health care and prevention services.PMID:33...

Influence of Sex Difference on Distribution of Risk Factors and Etiologic Subtypes of Acute Ischemic Stroke: Reality of Facts
Conclusion: Significant sex-related differences were found in risk factors and subtypes of AIS in our cohort of patients. Findings of our study are in general comparable with studies from all over the world.

Clinical Correlates of Electroencephalographic Patterns in Critically Ill Patients.
CONCLUSION: Certain EEG patterns are associated with particular underlying etiologies like SWs for encephalitis, markedly attenuated EEG activity and burst suppression with large artery stroke and HIE, respectively. Whereas few EEG patterns, including periodic discharges, RDA, persistent focal slow wave activity have some prognostic value in critically ill patients. However, they cannot be used as markers for prognostic assessment of patients without considering other clinical and diagnostic variables. A Novel Heterozygous Variant in Exon 19 of NOTCH3 in a Saudi Family with Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy
Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL; OMIM #125310) is the most common cause of monogenic familial cerebral small vessel disease. It typically manifests at middle adulthood with highly variable clinical features including migraine with aura, recurrent transient ischemic attacks or ischemic strokes, mood disorders, and progressive cognitive decline. It is caused by mutations in the NOTCH3 gene, which maps to the short arm of chromosome 19 and encode for epidermal growth factor-like repeats.

Utilization of Intravenous Tissue Plasminogen Activator and Reasons for Nonuse in Acute Ischemic Stroke in Saudi Arabia
Background: Recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA, alteplase) within 4.5 hours of symptom onset decreases the rate of disability after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Due to various reasons, alteplase remains underutilized in certain regions ( ∼3% in low- and middle-income countries). Aims: We aimed to estimate the alteplase utilization rate and identify the reasons for nonuse in Saudi Arabia. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all patients admitted with suspected stroke in the past 24 hours to the stroke unit at King Abdulaziz Medica l City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from February 2016 to July 2018.

Embolic Stroke of Undetermined Source in Saudi Arabia: Prevalence, Patient Characteristics, and Outcomes
Background: Embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) is a newly introduced clinical construct to better characterize cryptogenic stroke. It is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality and a high recurrence rate. It has not previously been investigated in Saudi stroke patients. ConclusionOSA is an important risk factor for ischemic stroke during sleep. Health care providers must be vigilant in inquiring about symptoms suggestive of OSA in every ischemic stroke patient, especially the patient whose stroke occurred during sleep.

Burden of non-communicable diseases in Iraq after the 2003 war.
Conclusion: Non-communicable diseases in Iraq continue to show as a new developing burden after the 2003 war. Hypertension and diabetes mellitus demonstrate rapidly rising trends which may, in turn, enhance the occurrence of ischemic heart diseases and cerebrovascular accidents.
