Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is associated with lower short- and long-term mortality in patients with carbon monoxide poisoning.
CONCLUSIONS: HBOT is associated with a lower mortality rate in patients with COP, especially in those who were younger than 20 years and those with acute respiratory failure. The results provide important references for decision making in the treatment of COP. PMID: 28427969 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Screening Programs for Obstructive Sleep Apnea
AbstractPurpose of the ReviewThe aim of this article is to describe the literature on the rationale, methods, and outcomes of screening programs for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).Recent FindingsThe evidence does not support screening for OSA in the general population. Instead, targeted case finding is advised among the following high-risk groups: patients with obesity, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, treatment refractory hypertension, type 2 diabetes, stroke, nocturnal dysrhythmias, and pulmonary hypertension. However, the method of screening remains unclear with some studies suggesting the use of questionna...

CHA2DS2 ‐VASc Scores Predict Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Conclusion: Early lifestyle modifications and antithrombotic therapy may be essential for COPD patients at a high risk of MACEs, i.e. those with CHA2DS2‐VASc scores ≥ 6. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Is obstructive sleep apnea associated with the presence of intracranial cerebral atherosclerosis?
ConclusionsOur findings suggest that moderate to severe OSA is associated with the presence of ICAS in patients with suspected OSA.

Stratification of cardiovascular risk in patients with atrial fibrillation and obstructive sleep apnea —validity of the 2MACE score
ConclusionOSA prevalence is increased in AF patients and is associated with an increase 2MACE score —an indicator of major cardiovascular events. There is a linear relationship between severity of OSA and increasing 2MACE scores, indicating increasing cardiovascular risk related to OSA severity.

Prevalence of common diseases in COPD patients versus lung-healthy control subjects: Results from the German COSYCONET study
COSYCONET investigates the interrelationship of COPD and comorbidities with regard to course and prognosis of the disease. The present analysis examined the prevalence of selected common diseases in the COPD cohort compared to apparently lung-healthy subjects from the population-based reference cohorts KORA and SHIP.Spirometry was performed in all subjects and COPD patients were graded according to GOLD criteria. Subjects from KORA/SHIP without known COPD, asthma or chronic bronchitis and with FEV1/FVC≥0.7 were regarded as apparently lung-healthy. Prevalences of myocardial infarction, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, obe...

Cardio-metabolic disorder in grandparents associated with asthma in offspring: Results from a European 3-generation analysis
Conclusion: These preliminary results are similar to those observed previously in Northern-Europe. Grand-father CMD was associated with subsequent asthma in offspring independently of a family history of asthma. This may have important implications with regard to public health intervention.

Prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in men varies markedly according to definition criteria
Conclusion: Inclusion of co-morbidities in the ICSD-3 criteria does not notably increase OSAS prevalence over that determined by OSA symptoms alone. Better identification of who is at long-term risk from OSA-related complications is needed to define significant OSA.1 Heinzer R, et al. Lancet Resp Med. 2016; 4: e5-e6.

Obstructive sleep apnea is independently associated with subclinical coronary atherosclerosis among middle-aged women
Conclusion Moderate to severe OSA is independently associated with the presence of CAC in middle-aged women. These results reinforce the concept that women are also susceptible to the cardiovascular consequences of OSA.

Clinical outcomes in overweight heart transplant recipients
Conclusions Overweight HT patients had better survival, but more rejections, CAV, and diabetes. Non-overweight HT patients had worse survival, plus more re-hospitalization time, lymphoma, and renal dysfunction.

The effect of sex and age on the comorbidity burden of OSA: an observational analysis from a large nationwide US health claims database
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a highly prevalent condition but studies exploring the burden of OSA-associated comorbidities have been limited by small sample sizes with underrepresentation of women. We queried the Truven Health MarketScan Research Databases 2003–2012, which is a collection of health insurance claims for working adults and retirees with employer-sponsored health insurance. Adults with a diagnostic code for OSA with at least 12 months of follow-up from the index date of OSA diagnosis were compared to a matched random sample. Comorbidities were assessed using International Classification of Dis...

Sleep disordered breathing in hospitalized patients
Abstract Sleep is a ubiquitous phenomenon that is both adaptive and restorative. Obstructive sleep apnea, obesity–hypoventilation syndrome, primary central sleep apnea, and Cheyne–Stokes breathing/complex sleep apnea are the most common sleep-related breathing disorders encountered in the hospitalized population. Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is commoner in hospitalized patients with obesity, congestive cardiac failure, COPD, and osteoarthritis. Various hospital and ICU-related factors contribute to disruption of sleep architecture and circadian rhythm. Sleep deprivation has been linked to higher incidence ...

Prevalence of carotid artery stenosis in Chinese patients with angina pectoris.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of CAS was not rare in China when compared with that in western countries, and the presence of CAS was weakly correlated with the extent of CAD. Screening for CAS should be recommended in Chinese patients with CAD, especially in those with one or more CAS-associated risk factors. PMID: 26793351 [PubMed]
