Chronic Kidney Disease and Functional Outcomes 6 Months after Ischemic Stroke: A Prospective Multicenter Study
This study is an interim report of the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation. The sample included 2,037 ischemic stroke patients aged 18 years or older. The FIM and K-MBI scores were assessed at discharge and at 6 months after the onset of stroke. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation. CKD was defined as an eGFR

Elucidating the Association Between Depressive Symptoms, Coronary Heart Disease, and Stroke in Black and White Adults: The REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study Epidemiology
Conclusions Proximal depressive symptoms were associated with incident fatal and nonfatal stroke and CVD death even after controlling for multiple explanatory factors, further supporting the urgent need for timely management of depressive symptoms.

Association of obesity and diabetes with physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption in stroke survivors
ConclusionsResults indicated a joint effect of obesity and diabetes with low PA among stroke survivors. Regardless of obesity –diabetes status, however, prevalence of low FV consumption and low PA exceeded 50%. Targeted interventions that modify these unhealthy behaviours among stroke survivors should be explored.

Stroke Belt Birth State and Late-life Cognition in The Study of Healthy Aging in African Americans (STAR)
CONCLUSION: Black Americans born in the Stroke Belt had worse late-life cognition than those born elsewhere, underscoring the importance of early-life exposures on brain health.PMID:34509621 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2021.09.001

Empowering Stroke Survivors: Understanding The Role of Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation
Stroke is 1 of the leading causes of disability worldwide, with someone having a stroke every 40 seconds in the United-States.1 A stroke can occur by clot that interrupts blood flow in the brain. It can also be caused by a burst of a blood vessel that causes bleeding in the brain. There are also other unknown causes of stroke which occur less frequently. A stroke causes brain cells to die as they no longer receive oxygen and nutrients from the blood. Some of the most common risk factors of stroke are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart diseases, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity.

Less Than Ideal: Trends in Cardiovascular Health Metrics among US Stroke Survivors, NHANES 1988-2010 (S12.006)
CONCLUSIONS: Fewer than 1% of US stroke survivors display ideal cardiovascular health. Although BP and lipid control improved over the last 2 decades, rates of obesity, diabetes, and poor diet increased. Stroke survivors who are Black, socioeconomically disadvantaged, or relatively less educated, appear to be at significantly greater odds of having poor cardiovascular health, highlighting the need for targeted interventions. Exploring the impacts of street-level greenspace on stroke and cardiovascular diseases in Chinese adults
In this study, the CVDs and stroke data of participants were retrieved from the 33 Chinese Community Health Study. We measured participants' exposure to street-level greenspace exposure using street view images and machine learning technique. Multilevel logistic regressions were applied. While controlling for confounders, we found that higher level of street-level greenspace exposure was associated with lower CVDs prevalence. However, street-level greenspace exposure was associated with stroke prevalence only for females. The associations were stronger among females, younger adults, participants with educational attainment...

Modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in adults aged 40–79 years in Germany with and without prior coronary heart disease or stroke
Conclusions: There is a high prevention potential from modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in the general population aged 40–79 years in Germany and among those with prior CHD or stroke. Risk factors are often co-occurring, are interrelated and require combined educational, behavioral, medical and policy approaches.

The cardiac model of rehabilitation for reducing cardiovascular risk factors post transient ischaemic attack and stroke: a randomized controlled trial.
Conclusion:The results suggest that standard cardiac rehabilitation programmes are a feasible and effective means of reducing the risk of future cardiovascular events for patients after minor stroke and transient ischaemic attack. PMID: 24121497 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Interorganizational Relationships in the Heart and Stroke Foundation's Spark Together for Healthy Kids™: Insights From Using Network Analysis
The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Spark Together for Healthy Kids™ (Spark) is a multiyear initiative in Ontario, Canada, that takes a population approach to obesity prevention. It focuses on creating healthy environments by improving access to healthy foods and physical activity, with an emphasis on strengthening the advocacy capacity of organizations and citizens. Consistent with the complexity of the intervention, the evaluation of Spark applied systems concepts and methods to test the utility of network analysis as a method for evaluation, and to inform collaborations of organizations involved in programs an...

Primordial Prevention of Stroke: Identifying the Determinants of Hypertension in Urban Uganda (P3.338)
Conclusions: Primordial interventions at the population and individual levels are needed to address the determinants of hypertension identified in this study. The Relationship between Metabolically Obese Non-Obese Weight and Stroke: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
This study aimed to compare the prevalence of stroke in MONW and MHO individuals. MethodsA total of 25,744 subjects aged ≥40 years were selected from the 2007–2014 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. MetS was defined using 2001 National Cholesterol Education Program/Adult Treatment Panel III and 2005 American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute criteria. Non-obese weigh t and obesity were defined as a body mass index (BMI)

Risks associated with the stroke predisposition at young age: facts and hypotheses in light of individualized predictive and preventive approach
AbstractStroke is one of the most devastating pathologies of the early twenty-first century demonstrating 1-month case-fatality rates ranging from 13 to 35% worldwide. Though the majority of cases do occur in individuals at an advanced age, a persistently increasing portion of the patient cohorts is affected early in life. Current studies provide alarming statistics for the incidence of “young” strokes including adolescents. Young stroke is a multifactorial disease involving genetic predisposition but also a number of modifiable factors, the synergic combination of which potentiates the risks. The article analyzes the ...
