Mineralocorticoid receptor-mediated vascular insulin resistance: an early contributor to diabetes-related vascular disease?
Abstract Two-thirds of adults in the U.S. are overweight or obese, and another 26 million have type 2 diabetes (T2D). Patients with diabetes and/or the metabolic syndrome have a significantly increased risk of heart attack and stroke compared with people with normal insulin sensitivity. Decreased insulin sensitivity in cardiovascular tissues as well as in traditional targets of insulin metabolic signaling, such as skeletal muscle, is an underlying abnormality in obesity, hypertension, and T2D. In the vasculature, insulin signaling plays a critical role in normal vascular function via endothelial cell nitric oxide ...

Hyperandrogenic Oligomenorrhea and Metabolic Risks Across Menopausal Transition.
CONCLUSIONS: Longitudinal evidence suggests that a history of androgen excess and menstrual irregularity is not associated with worsening of metabolic health after menopause. Our findings challenge the notion that a history of concurrent HA and Oligo reflects ongoing cardiometabolic risk in postmenopausal women. PMID: 24517154 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Assessment of college students' awareness and knowledge about conditions relevant to metabolic syndrome.
CONCLUSION: The findings in this study suggest that students' knowledge about conditions relevant to metabolic syndrome can be improved. In this essence, raising awareness about MetS based on students' pre-existing knowledge is essential to enhance students' wellness. PMID: 25360161 [PubMed]

Metabolic syndrome related to cardiovascular events in a 10-year prospective study
Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) becomes a serious society health problem. The main risk factors of MetS are related to the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, appearance of stroke, type 2 diabetes mellitus and the growing risk of mortality. MetS stimulates the appearance of early atherosclerosis, its progress and accelerates the frequency of cardiovascular complications related to atherosclerosis and diabetes mellitus.ObjectiveTo evaluate the risk of cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, stroke) among the individuals with MetS in a 10 year prospective study; to identify MetS components that determine ...

Cardiovascular events and target organ damage in primary aldosteronism compared with essential hypertension: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Publication date: Available online 9 November 2017 Source:The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Author(s): Silvia Monticone, Fabrizio D'Ascenzo, Claudio Moretti, Tracy Ann Williams, Franco Veglio, Fiorenzo Gaita, Paolo Mulatero Background There is conflicting evidence, relying on heterogeneous studies, as to whether aldosterone excess is responsible for an increased risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complications in patients with primary aldosteronism. We aimed to assess the association between primary aldosteronism and adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events, target organ damage, diabetes, and metabolic...

Burden of macro- and micro-vascular complications of type 2 diabetes in Bangladesh
ConclusionThe prevalence of macro- and micro-vascular complications were very high in Bangladesh and majority of them are key drivers for hospitalization and increased healthcare cost. An improvement of primary prevention strategy for complications is urgently needed which in turn will reduce the long-term healthcare cost for type 2 diabetes in Bangladesh.

Cardiovascular Programming During and After Diabetic Pregnancy: Role of Placental Dysfunction and IUGR
This study demonstrated that the incidence of ischemic heart disease and death were three times higher among men with low birth weight compared to men with high birth weight (5). Epidemiological investigations of adults born at the time of the Dutch famine between 1944 and 1945 revealed an association between maternal starvation and a low infant birth weight with a high incidence of hypertension and coronary heart disease in these adults (23). Furthermore, Painter et al. reported the incidence of early onset coronary heart disease among persons conceived during the Dutch famine (24). In that regard, Barker's findin...

Arterial stiffness and progression of cerebral white matter hyperintensities in patients with type 2 diabetes and matched controls: a 5-year cohort study
Stroke is a serious complication in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Arterial stiffness may improve stroke prediction. We investigated the association between carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity [PWV] and...

Metabolic syndrome and C reactive protein are associated with a reduced myocardial mechano-energetic efficiency
CONCLUSION: Non-diabetic and prediabetic individuals with metabolic syndrome exhibit increased stroke work and myocardial oxygen consumption, and an impaired MEEi, an established predictor of adverse cardiovascular events, and elevated hsCRP levels in combination with metabolic syndrome aggravates the myocardial MEEi impairment.PMID:37235788 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad300

Association of polycystic ovary syndrome with cardiovascular disease among US female hospitalizations
CONCLUSIONS: PCOS is associated with CVD events and the association is mediated by obesity and metabolic syndrome conditions, particularly among hospitalized women less than or equal to age 40 years in the US.PMID:37307574 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvad067
