Combination of High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol and Lipoprotein(a) as a Predictor of Collateral Circulation in Patients With Severe Unilateral Internal Carotid Artery Stenosis or Occlusion
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with severe unilateral ICA stenosis or occlusion, the combination of HDL-C and Lp(a) is a useful predictor of collateral circulation.PMID:35021272 | PMC:PMC8762497 | DOI:10.3988/jcn.2022.18.1.14

Identification of Symptomatic Carotid Artery Plaque: A Three-Item Scale Combined Angiography With Optical Coherence Tomography
Conclusion: The three-item scale comprising HDL-C <0.925 mmol/L, angiographical irregular plaque, and white thrombus detected by OCT may provide information to identify symptomatic carotid plaque. Further large-scale studies are required to validate whether the symptomatic carotid plaque scale is clinically valuable in recognizing carotid atherosclerosis in the early stages.PMID:34955737 | PMC:PMC8702715 | DOI:10.3389/fnins.2021.792437

Serum glutamate and glutamine-to-glutamate ratio are associated with coronary angiography defined coronary artery disease
CONCLUSIONS: We identified Glu and Gln/Glu ratio independently associated with CAG defined CAD as well as CAD severity in Chinese patients undergoing CAG.PMID:34906414 | DOI:10.1016/j.numecd.2021.09.021

COVID-19 Infection and Recurrent Stroke in Young Patients With Protein S Deficiency: A Case Report
Conclusions: SARS-CoV-2 infection potentializes the prothrombotic effect and vascular inflammation by accentuating protein S deficit. The place of steroids seems justifiable in the presence of symptoms of vasculitis in brain imaging.

Comparing pharmacotherapy in MINOCA versus medically managed obstructive acute coronary syndrome
This study uniquely compares the management and outcomes of MINOCA patients with a medically managed obstructive ACS (M-ACS) population. We retrospectively analysed registry data for consecutive patients admitted to the Gold Coast University Hospital with ACS requiring coronary angiography and identified patients with MINOCA and M-ACS. Baseline characteristics, pharmacological therapy and in-hospital outcomes were compared. In hospital outcomes were composite NACE, heart failure, stroke and major bleeding. Multivariate regression analysis was also performed to identify independent predictors of MINOCA. Multivariate regress...

Commentary: Statins for secondary prevention after coronary artery bypass grafting: Pleiotropic effects and dementia risk
In this issue, Pan and colleagues1  present a study using population-based data from the SWEDEHEART registry to report on the impact of statins on major adverse events after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Their results demonstrate decisively that the use of statins is associated with a decreased risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for new revascularization or angiography, and, interestingly, dementia. These effects were observed in both men and women, and in those younger than and older than 75 years of age, and were not dependent on whether patients wer...

Association between pericoronary adipose tissue attenuation and outcome after second-generation cryoballoon ablation for atrial fibrillation
CONCLUSION: Pre-ablation CTA-derived 3V-PCATA, representing pericoronary inflammation, was an independent predictor of recurrence after first-session AF ablation using a second-generation cryoballoon.ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: Assessment of 3V-PCATA may identify patients at high risk of AF recurrence after CBA for AF.PMID:34520243 | DOI:10.1259/bjr.20210361
