Incidence of myocardial infarction and vascular death in anticoagulated elderly patients with atrial fibrillation: Relation to atherosclerotic risk factors.
CONCLUSIONS: AF patients still experience a high rate of CVEs despite being on anticoagulant treatment. MetS is a common clinical feature in AF patients, which increases the risk of CVEs. A holistic approach is needed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular risk in patients with AF. Clinical Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01882114. Eggs can be part of a healthy diet
For years, men have gotten the message that they should go easy on the eggs-over-easy. But the evidence doesn't support banning eggs from the diet. In most studies so far, "an egg a day does not have a negative impact on health," says Eric Rimm, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, in the January 2015 issue of the Harvard Men's Health Watch. Eggs contain a number of healthy nutrients, including B vitamins and protein. The main concern about eating eggs has always been their cholesterol content. The cholesterol comes from the yolk, so many people choose to eat only the egg white. ...

Antioxidant Vitamin Intake and Mortality: The Leisure World Cohort Study.
Abstract To assess the relationship between antioxidant vitamin intake and all-cause mortality in older adults, we examined these associations using data from the Leisure World Cohort Study, a prospective study of residents of the Leisure World retirement community in Laguna Hills, California. In the early 1980s, participants (who were aged 44-101 years) completed a postal survey, which included details on use of vitamin supplements and dietary intake of foods containing vitamins A and C. Age-adjusted and multivariate-adjusted (for factors related to mortality in this cohort-smoking, alcohol intake, caffeine consu...

Cholesterol: I Told You So!
Big Brother has finally come around to what I’ve been telling my patients for almost 30 years – stop worrying about cholesterol in your diet! The influential Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, the nation’s top nutrition panel, has now admitted they were WRONG about cholesterol. And they have now proclaimed this former dietary evil as no longer a “nutrient of concern.”1 They were slow – and, of course, wrong for decades – but at least they got there in the end. That means eggs are back on the menu for millions of Americans – yolk and all – although my patients have been enjoying their e...
