Abstract Asthma and allergic diseases present a major health burden. Information on the prevalence of these diseases indicates that these diseases are increasing in various parts of the world. It was hoped that this study would be helpful to health system policy-makers in planning allergy prevention programs in the region. The prevalence of asthma and allergic diseases and relation between the various risk factors involved were assessed among schoolchildren in the city of Bushehr, Iran. Atopic dermatitis/atopic eczema.
Authors: Wallach D, Taïeb A Abstract Atopic dermatitis was described in 1933 but exists since antiquity. We review descriptions of a childhood skin disease compatible with our modern diagnosis of atopic dermatitis, in ancient medicine and in nineteenth century dermatology texts. We identify Hebra's prurigo and Besnier's diathetic prurigo as forerunners of atopic dermatitis, the latter being a synthesis of infantile eczema and prurigo. The pathogenic theories which link atopic dermatitis to humoralistic medicine, to digestive diseases, to allergy may have had consequences on today's reluctance to consider atopic de...

Pediatric eosinophilic esophagitis in Portugal.
We describe a retrospective data analysis of pediatric EoE patients followed in our Immunoallergology Department. Of the 25 children (22 male, average 10.8 years), 88% had prior history of rhinoconjunctivitis, 76% asthma, 48% eczema and 36% food allergy. After evaluation, we identified in 76% and 92% of patients food and aeroallergen sensitization, respectively; 68% had simultaneously food and inhalant sensitization and 96% had at least one positive test to aeroallergens or food allergens. The first (44%) and the most frequent (56%) symptom was dysphagia. The time between symptoms onset and the EoE diagnosis averaged 18.6 ...

Natural history of skin prick test reactivity: A 20-year prospective study of a random population sample of children and adolescents.
CONCLUSION: This 20-year prospective study found that sensitization is common, but its prevalence in individuals is also variable over time. Furthermore, through puberty and early adulthood a large number of individuals develop sensitization and a smaller number become desensitized. In addition, we found that symptoms of rhinitis rarely preceded sensitization. PMID: 28599992 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Demographic, Clinical, and Allergic Characteristics of Children with Eosinophilic Esophagitis in Isfahan, Iran.
Abstract Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic immune-mediated disease isolated to the esophagus Food allergy is thought to play an important role in the pathophysiology of EOE. The aim of this study is to evaluate demographic features and sensitivity of patients with reference to common food allergens. Children with documented EoE were enlisted for this study. Skin prick test and patch test were done for all participants. Each test contained common food allergens. Other tests, such as evaluation of total IgE and eosinophil count, were also done. A total of 30 patients (the mean age of participants was 3±6 ...

Implementation science into the public - pregnant women need to prenatal visit for allergy prevention?
Allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis (AD), food allergy (FA), asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR) are common; according to a national birth cohort study in Japan, almost half of pregnant women reported a history of allergic disease.1 Given that genetic factors, including family history, are predictors of allergic diseases in offspring, we expect the birth of many infants who carry a high risk of developing allergies. Among allergy prevention strategies, the effectiveness of primary prevention of eczema in high-risk infants by the topical application of emollient during the neonatal period has been demonstrated in two ...

Nummular Eczema: An Updated Review.
CONCLUSION: With proper treatment, nummular eczema can be cleared over a few weeks, although the course can be chronic and characterized by relapses and remissions. Moisturizing of the skin and avoidance of identifiable exacerbating factors such as hot water baths and harsh soaps may reduce the frequency of recurrence. Diseases that present with annular lesions may mimic nummular eczema and the differential diagnosis is broad. As such, physicians must be familiar with this condition so that an accurate diagnosis can be made, and appropriate treatment initiated. PMID: 32778043 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Phenotype of Atopic Dermatitis With Food Allergy Predicts Development of Childhood Asthma via Gut Wnt Signaling
CONCLUSIONS: When FA is present in various phenotypes of AD at early life, regardless of severity of eczema, it may be associated with gut Wnt signaling and later development of asthma.PMID:36426397 | DOI:10.4168/aair.2022.14.6.674
