Atopic status and latex sensitization in a cohort of 1,628 students of health care faculties.
CONCLUSION: Despite the high prevalence of atopy in health care students of Trieste, the latex sensitization rate is very low and comparable to general population. This is reasonably due to the low exposure to latex gloves at the time of the evaluation and to low latex release from the gloves currently used in our hospital. PMID: 28477790 [PubMed - in process]

Multi-morbidities of allergic rhinitis in adults: European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Task Force Report
This report has been prepared by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Task Force on Allergic Rhinitis (AR) comorbidities. The aim of this multidisciplinary European consensus document is to highlight the role of multimorbidities in the definition, classification, mechanisms, recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of AR, and to define the needs in this neglected area by a literature review. AR is a systemic allergic disease and is generally associated with numerous multi-morbid disorders, including asthma, eczema, food allergies, eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE), conjunctivitis, chronic middle ear eff...

Duration and exclusiveness of breastfeeding and school-age lung function and asthma.
CONCLUSION: Shorter duration and nonexclusivity of breastfeeding were associated with a lower FEV1 and FVC but not asthma at school-age. PMID: 28554704 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Associations of self-reported allergic diseases and musculoskeletal problems in children: A US population-based study.
CONCLUSION: Self-reported allergic diseases in children were associated with bone, joint, and muscle problems, and associations strengthened with allergic disease severity and number of allergic diseases. Severe eczema may be associated with bone problems in children. Bone, joint, and muscle problems must be considered in children with severe allergic disease, and prospective studies are necessary to define this association. Intestinal Microbiota in Infants at High-risk for Allergy: Effects of Prebiotics and Role in Eczema Development
This study investigated the factors influencing the assembly of the intestinal microbiome and reveals links between the functionality of key microbial taxa in the gut and eczema development in infants at high-risk of developing allergy.

Intestinal microbiota in infants at high risk for allergy: Effects of prebiotics and role in eczema development
Development of the gut microbiota in infancy is important in maturation of the immune system. Deviations in colonization patterns have been associated with allergic manifestations such as eczema, but exact microbiome dysfunctions underlying allergies remain unclear. We studied the gut microbiota of 138 infants at increased risk of allergy, participating in a clinical trial investigating the effectiveness of a partially hydrolyzed protein formula supplemented with nondigestible oligosaccharides on the prevention of eczema.

Zoonotic helminth exposure and risk of allergic diseases: a study of two generations in Norway
Conclusions & Clinical RelevanceZoonotic helminth exposure in Norway was less frequent in offspring than parents; however, Toxocara spp. seropositivity was associated with increased risk of allergic manifestations in the offspring generation, but not among parents. Changes in response to helminth exposure may provide insights into the increase in allergy incidence in affluent countries. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Complementary, alternative and integrative medicine for childhood atopic dermatitis.
CONCLUSIONS: AD is a complex disease. The psychodynamics of the child and his/her family is the reason for the often suboptimal outcomes. Both Western and CAM practitioners should collaborate to create a mutually encouraging environment for the advances of IM. CAM and IM publications and patents are reviewed. Evidence of their efficacy is generally lacking. Further research is needed. PMID: 29189188 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between atopic dermatitis and serious cutaneous, multiorgan and systemic infections in US adults.
CONCLUSION: Adults with AD had increased cutaneous, respiratory, multiorgan, and systemic infections, which were associated with a considerable cost burden. PMID: 29273131 [PubMed - in process]

Impact of Food Allergy on the Growth of Children with Moderate-Severe Atopic Dermatitis
Children with moderate-severe atopic dermatitis and food allergy (especially milk) exhibit reduced weight and height, while those with atopic dermatitis alone are often overweight or obese, and their body mass index correlates with eczema severity.

Differences in Genetic Variations Between Treatable and Recalcitrant Atopic Dermatitis in Korean.
CONCLUSIONS: According to our study, no genetic variation to predict recalcitrant AD was identified, suggesting that clinical manifestation, rather than genetic variations of AD patients is more likely to be an important factor in predicting the prognosis of AD. Further large-scale studies on the correlation between genetic variation and recalcitrant AD are needed. PMID: 29676071 [PubMed]
