Phototoxic and photoallergic cutaneous drug reactions.
Authors: Glatz M, Hofbauer GF Abstract A variety of topical and systemic drugs can induce cutaneous photosensitive reactions. These drugs and their metabolites accumulate in the skin and increase photosensitivity of the skin typically in the UVA spectrum of light. Concerning the underlying biochemical mechanisms and the phenotype of reactions, photosensitivity can be divided into phototoxic and photoallergic reactions. In phototoxic reactions, often highly reactive oxygen molecules are formed that induce tissue damage. Skin changes resemble sunburn and develop within hours after incubation with the drug together wi...

The Diagnosis of Hyper Immunoglobulin E Syndrome Based on Project Management.
Abstract Hyperimmunoglobulin E Syndrome (HIES) is a complex primary immunodeficiency characterized by both immunologic and non-immunologic manifestations. High serum IgE level, eosinophilia, eczema, recurrent skin and lung infections constitute the immunologic profile of HIES, whereas characteristic facial appearance, scoliosis, retained primary teeth, joint hyperextensibility, bone fractures following minimal trauma and craniosynostosis are the main non-immunologic manifestations. The diagnosis of HIES cannot be made by routine immunologic tests. As the main characteristic laboratory abnormalities of this syndrom...

Risk factors identified for gestational eczema
HOUSTON– New-onset eczema during pregnancy is a common phenomenon with several newly identified risk factors. This disease entity deserves a proper name: gestational eczema, Dr. Wilfried J.J. Karmaus asserted at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. In...

Serum Vitamin D levels and Vitamin D supplementation do not correlate with the severity of chronic eczema in children.
CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, our study is the first one that shows no correlation between serum levels of Vitamin D, eczema severity and IgE sensitization in a pediatric population suffering from chronic eczema. PMID: 25781193 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Is Folate Status a Risk Factor for Asthma or Other Allergic Diseases?
CONCLUSIONS: It is indicated that maternal folic acid supplementation during early pregnancy may increase the risk of wheeze in early childhood and that the TT genotype of MTHFR C677T polymorphism impairing folic acid metabolism would be at high risk of asthma development. These results might provide additional information for recommendations regarding forced folate consumption or folic acid supplements during pregnancy based on its well-established benefits for the prevention of congenital malformations. However, currently available evidence is of low quality which is needed to further elucidate. PMID: 26333700 [PubMed]

Introduction of the Reliable Estimation of Atopic Dermatitis in ChildHood: Novel, Diagnostic Criteria for Childhood Atopic Dermatitis.
CONCLUSIONS: We propose the REACH as new full, questionnaire-based diagnostic criteria for childhood AD in epidemiological surveys. Further studies are warranted to validate the REACH in different populations or countries in the context of large-scale, epidemiological surveys. PMID: 26922933 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A Comprehensive Review of the Treatment of Atopic Eczema.
Authors: Lee JH, Son SW, Cho SH Abstract Atopic eczema (AE) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disorder which usually develops in early childhood. In spite of intensive investigations, the causes of AE remain unclear, but are likely to be multifactorial in nature. Environmental factors or genetic-environmental interactions seem to play a key role in disease progression. Among various measures of AE managment, cutaneous hydration, which improves barrier function and relieve itchiness, may be helpful to reduce the need for topical steroid use and therefore should be used as a basic treatment. Avoiding aggravating factor...

Response to Nonallergenic Irritants in Children With Allergic and Nonallergic Rhinitis.
CONCLUSIONS: Response to a nonallergenic irritant was useful for gauging the severity of rhinitis, but not for differentiating AR from NAR. AR and NAR patients with atopic eczema may increase nasal sensitivity to nonallergenic irritants. PMID: 27126728 [PubMed]

Association between medication prescription for atopic diseases and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
CONCLUSION: This study provides further evidence to support the hypothesis that atopic diseases are associated with ADHD. The parental-offspring association suggests a possible genetic and/or environmental component. PMID: 27315741 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Overview of Systematic Reviews in Allergy Epidemiology
ConclusionWe present a comprehensive overview with an indexed database of published systematic reviews in allergy epidemiology. We believe that this clarifies where most research interest has focussed and which areas could benefit from further research. We propose that this effort is updated every few years to include the most recently published evidence and to extend the search to an even broader list of hypersensitivity / allergic disorders. This article is protected by copyright. Clinical Diversity of Atopic Dermatitis: A Review of 5,000 Patients at a Single Institute.
CONCLUSIONS: This analysis of 5,000 patients would lead to a better understanding of various subtypes and diverse clinical features of AD in Koreans. Distinct characteristics were observed among different age groups; thus, treatment strategies may need to be differentiated accordingly. PMID: 28102061 [PubMed]

Association between atopic manifestations and eosinophilic esophagitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite pointing to a significant association between atopy and EoE, most of the studies provided no normalized diagnostic criteria for atopy. Further research should provide clear and standardized definitions of such conditions. TRIAL REGISTRATION: www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO Trial Identifier: CRD42016036161.
