Giving voice to people with communication disabilities during mental capacity assessments.
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: This study highlights that non-speech and language therapist health professionals have difficulty identifying and screening for communication difficulties. This confirms existing evidence that people with communication disabilities may not receive the decision-making support they require during mental capacity assessments when speech and language therapists are not involved. Greater understanding of health professionals' thought processes regarding communication is required to further develop this unique communication screening tool so that it can effectively enable healthcare professionals ...

Deep Learning-Based Screening Test for Cognitive Impairment Using Basic Blood Test Data for Health Examination
Conclusions: The DNN model could predict cognitive function accurately. The predicted MMSE scores were significantly lower than the ground truth scores in the Healthy and Health examination groups, while there was no significant difference in the Patient group. We suggest that the difference between the predicted and ground truth MMSE scores was caused by changes in atherosclerosis with aging, and that applying the DNN model to younger subjects may predict future cognitive impairment after the onset of atherosclerosis.

Approaches to Eating and Drinking with Acknowledged Risk: A Systematic Review
ConclusionThere is a paucity of evidence to determine if EDAR protocols improve care. However, support is emerging for a coordinated approach to managing EDAR. Findings suggest having a protocol is not enough; training and communication within teams is essential, together with incorporating feedback from patients and carers, and this justifies further work.

Treadmill Exercise Suppresses Cognitive Decline and Increases White Matter Oligodendrocyte Precursor Cells in a Mouse Model of Prolonged Cerebral Hypoperfusion
AbstractClinical evidence suggests that patients with subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVD) perform better at cognitive tests after exercise. However, the underlying mechanism for this effect is largely unknown. Here, we examined how treadmill exercise changes the cognitive function and white matter cellular pathology in a mouse model of SIVD. Prolonged cerebral hypoperfusion was induced in 2-month-old male C57BL/6J mice by bilateral common carotid artery stenosis. A week later, the mice were randomly divided into a group that received 6-week treadmill exercise and a sedentary group for observation. In multiple beh...

Speech and language therapy for primary progressive aphasia across the UK: A survey of current practice.
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: This survey highlights the range of current PPA assessment and intervention practices in use by the respondents. Communication partner training is commonly used by the surveyed SLTs, despite the lack of research evidence examining its effectiveness for PPA. There is a need to develop evidence-based care pathways for people with PPA in order to advocate for further commissioning of clinical services. PMID: 31364253 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
