Estimating global prevalence, incidence, and outcomes of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease from 2000 to 2021: systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of NAFLD is increasing globally. It is contributing to poor clinical outcomes including hepatocellular carcinoma and death. Rising awareness and urgent actions are warranted to control the NAFLD pandemic across the globe.PMID:36070463 | DOI:10.1097/CM9.0000000000002277

Epidemiology of Liver Cancer in Latin America: Current and Future Trends
Semin Liver Dis DOI: 10.1055/s-0039-3399561Over 38,000 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are estimated to occur in Latin America annually. The region is characterized by sociocultural heterogeneity and economic disparities, which impose barriers in addressing this major health issue. A significant proportion of patients are still diagnosed in the later stages of the disease, although efforts to implement effective screening programs have been reported by referral centers. While viral hepatitis remains the predominant etiology of liver disease among HCC cases in Latin America, a high prevalence of fatty liver disease ...

PubMed-supported clinical term weighting approach for improving inter-patient similarity measure in diagnosis prediction
Background: Similarity-based retrieval of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) from large clinical information systems provides physicians the evidence support in making diagnoses or referring examinations for the suspected cases. Clinical Terms in EHRs represent high-level conceptual information and the similarity measure established based on these terms reflects the chance of inter-patient disease co-occurrence. The assumption that clinical terms are equally relevant to a disease is unrealistic, reducing the prediction accuracy. Here we propose a term weighting approach supported by PubMed search engine to address this issue...

Long-term survival following multidisciplinary treatment of metastatic sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma: a case report
Conclusion A literature review revealed that metastatic sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma has very poor prognosis, with a survival of <1 year despite systemic therapy. Our patient in this present case achieved long-term survival, a rare incidence worthy of report.

Malignancies in Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis - A Continuing Threat
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic inflammatory liver disease of unknown etiology, primarily targeting cholangiocytes at any portion of the biliary tree. No effective medical treatments are currently available. A unique feature of PSC is its close association (about 80%) with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), mainly ulcerative colitis (UC). As in many chronic inflammatory conditions, cancer development can complicate PSC, accounting for>40% of deaths. Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) and colorectal carcinoma (CRC) have been variably associated to PSC, with a prevalence up to 13-14%. The ...

Defining Clinical Indications of Proton Beam Therapy at National Level in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Authors: AlHussain H, Balbaid A, Malyapa R, AlOthman M, Bahadur YA, Tunio MA, Al Asiri M Abstract The Saudi Particle Therapy Centre (SPTC) is establishing proton beam therapy (PBT) services within Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Thus, national guidelines for the pertinent draft, and recommendations of PBT for cancer patients are utmost important. Saudi Particle Therapy Centre invited a panel of expert radiation oncologists practicing within KSA to formulate national clinical practice guidelines for the referral, absolute and relative indications and dose/fractionation for PBT. After identifying the key clinical que...

Hepatocellular carcinoma in non-alcohol fatty liver disease - changing trends and specific challenges.
Conclusions: The constantly increasing prevalence of NAFLD in the general population can contribute to a growing role of NAFLD/NASH in HCC epidemiology. Moreover, some particular challenges specific for patients with liver steatosis may impede proper HCC diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. PMID: 31631714 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The potential of gut microbiome as a non-invasive predictive biomarker for early detection of pancreatic cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma
CONCLUSIONS: To conclude, the field regarding the link between gut microbiome as a non-invasive biomarkers and early detection of pancreatic cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma exists, however, it is not well-investigated. Additionally, many of the studies were conducted with small sample sizes, whereas biomarkers are ethnicity-dependent and should be validated in wide range of populations. Nevertheless, these aspects are promising and open up new diagnostic options.PMID:34919227 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202112_27421
