Characterization of procyanidin extracts from hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida) in human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line Caco-2, simulated Digestion, and fermentation identified unique and novel prebiotic properties
This study aims to explore the dynamic changes of HPCs during in vitro digestion and fermentation, as well as their Caco-2 permeability, focusing mainly on the interaction between gut microbiota and HPCs. The results showed that the digested HPC samples had characteristic absorption peaks at 280 nm, and there were absorption peaks in the stretching vibration zone, including OH and CC on the benzene ring, which suggested that procyanidins were the main components in HPCs after in vitro digestion. Meanwhile, HPCs had the highest stability in the oral phase. However, the total procyanidin content of HPCs decreased during gast...

Synthesis and Anticancer activity of Novel Chromene Derivatives, Chromeno2,3-d1,3oxazines, and Chromeno2,3-dpyrimidines
CONCLUSION: Several chromene derivatives had been synthesized and their structures had been confirmed using different spectroscopic techniques. Some of the chromene derivatives that were screened against different cancer cell lines showed promising anticancer activity higher than the reference standard drug. For example, chromene derivative 2 had anticancer activity against human colon cancer cell lines (HT-29) higher than the reference drug doxorubicin. Chromene derivative 5 had anticancer activity against liver cancer cell lines (HepG-2) higher than the reference drug doxorubicin. Chromene derivative 6 had anticancer act...

Dimethyl cardamonin from fruits of Campomanesia reitziana D. Legrand promotes gastroprotection and gastric healing effects in rodents
Chem Biodivers. 2022 Oct 17. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202200727. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCampomanesia reitziana D. Legrand (Myrtaceae) displays antiulcer properties when given to rodents. The major active chemical components of C. reitziana are chalcones, including 4',6'-dihydroxy-3',5'-dimethyl-2'-methoxy chalcone or dimethyl cardamonin (DMC), therefore, we hypothesized that this compound could have antiulcer effects and the aim of the present study was to evaluate its gastroprotective and gastric healing properties. DMC was isolated from the fruits of C. reitziana and its gastroprotective effect was evaluated by ethanol a...

Potential of unglycosylated horseradish peroxidase variants for enzyme prodrug cancer therapy
In this study, we generated recombinant, unglycosylated HRP variants in Escherichia coli using random mutagenesis and investigated their biochemical properties and suitability for cancer treatment. The cytotoxicity of the HRP-IAA enzyme prodrug system was assessed in vitro with HCT-116 human colon, FaDu human nasopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma and murine colon adenocarcinoma cells (MC38). Extensive cytotoxicity was shown in all three cancer cell lines: the cell viability of HCT-116 and MC38 cells treated with HRP-IAA was below 1% after 24 h incubation and the surviving fraction of FaDu cells was ≤ 10% after 72 h. How...

Bioactivities and Extract Dereplication of Actinomycetales Isolated From Marine Sponges
This study aimed to contribute to the need of finding new and more effective bioactive molecules against several of the earlier mentioned threats faced by human kind nowadays. For this, eighteen species from the Actinomycetales previously isolated from Erylus spp. sponges collected in Portuguese marine waters (Açores, Madeira, and continental shelf) were screened for antimicrobial, anti-cancer, anti-parasitic and anti-obesogenic activities. Materials and Methods Biological Material The bacteria under study belong to the order Actinomycetales within the phylum Actinobacteria and were isolated from marine sponges o...
