Acute ischemic stroke secondary to ventriculoperitoneal shunt dysfunction in a child with Moyamoya syndrome
CONCLUSION: Children who receive RT for brain tumor, particularly if the circle of Willis region is involved, require close surveillance for the development of vasculopathy and consequent stroke. This surveillance must be even tighter if the patient has been treated with ventricular shunt for the possible synergistic interaction between the two causes on reducing cerebral perfusion and increasing the risk of acute ischemic events.PMID:35928308 | PMC:PMC9345112 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_434_2022

Characterization of Astrocytes in the Minocycline-Administered Mouse Photothrombotic Ischemic Stroke Model
In this study, we used a mouse photothrombotic ischemic stroke model to examine the characteristics of astrocytes after the administration of minocycline during ischemic stroke. Minocycline increased astrocyte reactivity and affected the localization of astrocytes in the penumbra region. Molecular characterization revealed that the induced expression of mRNA encoding the fatty acid binding protein 7 (FABP7) by photothrombosis was enhanced by the minocycline administration. Meanwhile, minocycline did not significantly affect the phenotype or class of astrocytes. The expression of Fabp7 mRNA was well correlated with that of ...

Nose to brain delivery of melatonin lipidic nanocapsules as a promising post-ischemic neuroprotective therapeutic modality
Drug Deliv. 2022 Dec;29(1):2469-2480. doi: 10.1080/10717544.2022.2104405.ABSTRACTIschemic stroke accounts for about 87% of all strokes, causing long-term disability in adults, and is the second leading cause of death worldwide. In search of new therapeutic modalities, the use of neuroprotective agents loaded in nanocarriers to be delivered by noninvasive means (i.e. via intranasal route) became a popular approach. In the current study, melatonin (MEL) was loaded in lipidic nanocapsules (LNCs) prepared using the phase inversion method, and characterized in terms of size, polydispersity, zeta potential, in vitro drug release...

E-152 Neurointervention in the pediatric population: 18-years experience from a single center
ConclusionsAt out institution, multidisciplinary interaction allowed the treatment of a wide variety of cerebrovascular diseases in the pediatric population. Pediatric patients carry high complication risks due to frequent presence of systemic conditions, but joined experience from pediatric neurology, neurosurgery and neurointervention departments allow their treatment with optimal planning and results.Abstract E-152 Table 1Intracranial aneurysms Variable Value Age at diagnosis, mean (SD) or median (IQR) 16 (16–19) Male:Female 12:10 Associated conditions•Moya moya•Connective tissue disorder•Von Wille...

E-164 Recurrent strokes as the initial presentation of colorectal adenocarcinoma
ConclusionCryptogenic strokes in patients with cancer are cardioembolic manifestations of cancer-mediated hypercoagulability such as NBTE, which consists of sterile, platelet-fibrin vegetations on cardiac valves. The mechanism of thromboembolism in patients with cancer is based on the interaction between tumor cells and leukocytes, which creates a thrombogenic vascular lining and induces the release of substances that activate the coagulation cascade. The diagnosis of NBTE should depend on the distribution of occluded vessels, identification of thrombus, and exclusion of other possible causes such as infective endocarditis...

Neuroprotective, Anti-inflammatory Effect of Furanochrome, Visnagin Against Middle Cerebral Ischemia-Induced Rat Model
In this study, the anti-ischemic effect of a furanochrome visnagin was assessed in in vivo rat model. Middle cerebral ischemic/reperfusion was induced in healthy male Sprague Dawley rats and treated with different concentrations of visnagin. The neuroprotective effect of visnagin against cerebral ischemia-induced rats was assessed by analyzing the neurological score, brain edema, infract volume, and Evans blue leakage. The anti-inflammatory property of visnagin was assessed by quantifying proinflammatory cytokines in serum and brain tissues of cerebral ischemia-induced rats. Prostaglandin E-2, COX-2, and NFκ-β were estim...

Risk factors and predictors for venous thromboembolism in people with ischemic stroke: A systematic review
In conclusion, this systematic review informs on several potential risk factors and predictors for VTE in people with ischemic stroke. To improve risk stratification and guide development of risk prediction models, further confirmation is needed, as there were few high-quality studies on each factor.PMID:35815351 | DOI:10.1111/jth.15813

Neutrophil Heterogeneity and its Roles in the Inflammatory Network after Ischemic Stroke
Curr Neuropharmacol. 2022 Jul 6. doi: 10.2174/1570159X20666220706115957. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs the first peripheral immune cells to enter the brain after ischemic stroke, neutrophils are important participants in stroke-related neuroinflammation. Neutrophils are quickly mobilized from the periphery in response to a stroke episode and cross the blood-brain barrier to reach the ischemic brain parenchyma. This process involves the mobilization and activation of neutrophils from peripheral immune organs (including the bone marrow and spleen), their chemotaxis in the peripheral blood, and their infiltration into the ...
