Applying computer text mining algorithms for oversampling tumor mutation status in medical records for the NCI Patterns of Care studies
CONCLUSIONS: The adaption of text mining algorithm proved effective in oversample patients with uncommon conditions in studies where electronic medical records are accessible. The 2019 POC study provides valuable data for researchers to evaluate cancer therapy details and patient characteristics, particularly among those with EGFR/ALK test positive cases.PMID:37480595 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijmedinf.2023.105157

Small study finds that 3 years after prostate cancer treatment, men may report high quality of life and functioning
Commentary on: Jakobsson L, Persson L, Lundqvist P. Daily life and life quality 3 years following prostate cancer treatment. BMC Nurs 2013;12:11. Implications for practice and research The male patients in this study reported high levels of quality of life, with high ratings for overall physical functioning and health. They appeared to adjust to the diminished sexual function. Nurses can use these outcomes and the results from other studies to inform patients. Nurses should understand that each individual will have a different prediagnosis level of and valuation of sexual activity/function. Further multicentred large studi...

Changes in coverage of sun protection in the news: threats and opportunities from emerging issues
This study aimed to determine whether there have been shifts in news coverage of sun protection issues over a 12-year period in the context of an evolving skin cancer prevention agenda. A content analysis was performed on all relevant articles (N = 552) published in the two metropolitan daily newspapers in Melbourne, Australia, from 2001 to 2012. Coding variables included theme, article type, prominence, spokesperson and topic slant. Articles were collapsed into three 4-year blocks and a series of chi-square analyses conducted to examine changes over time in coverage of topical issues (i.e. vitamin D and sunbeds) and estab...

The Effects of Education on Compliance With Skin Cancer Risk Reduction Guidelines
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this project was to provide educational materials to healthcare professionals to enhance their ability to deliver patient-centered education and, ultimately, improve patients’ comprehension of personal risk factors for developing various skin cancers. Participants were 30 future nurse practitioners selected from nursing master programs at a university in New York City. Each participant was given a knowledge-based skin cancer pretest, followed by a focused educational session regarding various types of skin cancer, methods of prevention, and methods of detection, which was heavily focused on skin ...

A randomised test of printed educational materials about melanoma detection: Varying skin self-examination technique and visual image dose
Conclusions: Overall, both the ABCDE and UDS approaches demonstrated utility in improving early skin cancer detection and education. A balanced presentation of typical and atypical nevi images seems to be an important consideration when presenting visual and written information about melanoma to laypersons.

Evaluation of Project Students are Sun Safe (SASS): A University Student-Delivered Skin Cancer Prevention Program for Schools
Abstract Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the USA and is increasing in children and young adults. Adolescents are an important target population for sun-safety interventions with ultraviolet radiation as the strongest risk factor for developing skin cancer. Schools are an ideal setting to intervene with adolescents. A novel Arizona skin cancer prevention in-class education-activity program, Project ‘Students are Sun Safe’ (SASS), was designed to be delivered by university students for middle school and high school students. Participant students completed the pre- and post-program tests and a satisfact...

Language of Uncertainty: the Expression of Decisional Conflict Related to Skin Cancer Prevention Recommendations
This study extends prior research on the use of natural language as a predictor of consumer attitudes and provides a link to decision-making by evaluating the predictive role of uncertainty indicators expressed in natural language. Analyzed data included free-text comments and structured scale responses related to information about skin cancer prevention options. The study identified natural language indicators of uncertainty and showed that it can serve as a predictor of decisional conflict. The natural indicators of uncertainty reported here can facilitate the monitoring of health consumer perceptions about cancer preven...

A qualitative systematic review of the efficacy of sun protection education in organ transplant recipients
Transplant recipients are at increased risk of developing skin cancer as a result of chronic immunosuppression. Educating patients on sun protection has been routine posttransplantation, but to  our knowledge, no systematic review has yet analyzed the efficacy of such education measures in this high-risk population.

An update to the recommended core content for sun safety messages for public education in Canada: A consensus report.
Abstract Reducing ultraviolet radiation exposure decreases the risk of skin cancer and eye damage. Between 1996 and 2006, Canadians increased their time in the sun without improving protection. National consensus on sun protection information for the public was last achieved in 1994. Public messages have since been modified inconsistently. The Ontario Sun Safety Working Group initiated a review of messages and engaged a scientific panel to draft message content. Working Group members then delivered a national consensus process, engaging a National Steering Committee, a health communications expert and representati...

Project DERM: Skin cancer health education, screening services and outcomes in an underserved population in Harris County, TX
Five million people are diagnosed with skin cancer annually. Melanoma incidence increases 3% per year; 76,380 new cases of invasive melanoma are expected in 2016. Melanoma incidence is highest in non-Hispanic whites (NHW). Hispanics are more likely than NHW to have thicker melanoma tumors, more advanced stage at diagnosis and higher mortality. Lower socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with thicker melanoma tumors, advanced stage at diagnosis and poorer survival. Project DERM provides skin cancer health education and screening to an underserved, low-SES population.

Utilizing a Multi-modal Skin Cancer Education Program with Heart Transplant Recipients to Increase Knowledge and Sun Protection Practices
Background: Immunosuppressant medications significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancers after transplantation. Skin cancers pose problems for transplant patients including: financial burden, impaired quality of life, pain and discomfort from treatments and procedures, and even death. Fortunately, a majority of skin cancers can be prevented or can be detected early and treated successfully. Prevention and early detection of skin cancer requires vigilant screening and strict sun protection behaviors which are often achieved with focused patient education.

Skin Cancer-Sun Knowledge and Sun Protection Behaviors of Liver Transplant Recipients in Turkey
AbstractThe aim of this study was to compare liver transplant recipients (LTRs) with the general population regarding their knowledge of skin cancer, sun health, sun protection behaviors, and affecting factors. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Turkey between March 2016 and September 2016 with 104 LTRs and 100 participants from the general population group (GPG). The mean age of the LTRs was 53.2  ± 11.8 and that of the GPG was 42.7 ± 14.5. The LTRs’ skin cancer and sun knowledge were significantly lower than in the GPG, but there was no difference between the two groups in terms of their sun protection b...
